Question Cooling fan question....

I don't have any problems yet, but I want to fix a potential problem in the making. I'm concerned about the overheating issues I will have in the summer heat in traffic here in Atlanta with my built SSR. What auxillary fan should I use and what temperature should I set it to turn on. I am going to visit Reece Cox at MTI again next week so he can hopefully fix my speedometer setting. Can't I have him change my temperature setting if needed? I've seen Mike's fan but not sure which dirrection to go......

Thumbs up Mike's replacement fan

the Magnacharger tune should already have changed your fan settings to come on sooner so you just need a better fan

Another question: If I should go with just one option, which should I do first, the aux fan or the replacement fan?

Definitiely the main fan.

That factory main fan is junk, just counting down to certain failure.

When you say "new main fan" I assume you mean one from Mike in AZ or the dual Spal fan kit from Colvin Automotive, but NOT merely a new GM main fan!

New GM ones are no better than the one you have!

Sorry, forgot.

What I was running on my SSR, set by Lyndon Wester in his custom tune for me:

Fan low on: 180
Fan low off: 178
Fan turned on by AC: 185
Fan 2 on: 194
Fan 2 off: 190

I was running the dual Spal setup from Colvin.

Mike's fan is plug and play. Took me 30 minutes to remove the old and put in the new, and I was using a crescent wrench because I left my sockets at work. My temp guage has never gone over 210 but I can not tell you what Joe set my thermostat at. The Aux fans that mike has are a biot more of a chorre to install and they come with their own thermostat which resides in the fins of the radiator. Still an easy installation.

Fan

My OEM Fan was changed under warranty.
But the Dealer would not adjust the fan settings.

I went to a Race Related in Clearwater and they reset the computer settings.

Fan comes ON at 185 degrees
Fan is ON from 0-35 mph, OFF above 35mph.

Stays at 200/205 degrees all the time, summer and winter.

If there is such a thing as winter in Florida.

Has worked fine for me over the last 18 months.

Genaris,

In a nutshell, here's my recommendation for your built engine.....

1) Leave the OEM 195 t-stat in place. It does a really good job of maintaining the engine temp and a "somewhat standard" cooling system configuration.

2) Have the low speed fan come on at 200. This is about the point where your t-stat is fully opened and you are on the thermal transfer curve of the radiator efficiency.

3) Have the high speed fan come on at 210. This gives a little buffer for the low speed fan to operate. Setting at 205 is a good option if you really are trying to hold the temperature constant.... it leaves very little slack for the fan operation though.

I am suggesting that you allow the engine to regulate in the 195 to 210 range. Yes, this is slightly elevated from what all the old school teachings lead us into, but it works well. I am willing to run it a little hotter, knowing that it will be consistent.

After you have made the above changes and get a feel for how your truck responds to stop and go traffic, you could elect to change the t-stat to a 180 unit from Hypertech. I have changed them here in Phoenix, but not seen any real shift in the cockpit indication of temperature. Kinda like the engine has a mind of its own for operating temp.

Best Regards,

Mike

For all the money you have spent on the engine you should look at Mike's replacement radiator to go along with the new fan.
Increasing the cooling system capacity will never hurt your build.

Can't go Wrong with Mike's Fan

Hi All,

I suffered the overheating bug in Philly on the 3rd of July I-95 traffice and full maddness going to the Jersey Shore where I hit a traffic jam and OVERHEATED. Cutting to the chase. I contacted Mike, he dropped shipped me the Main Fan I installed it in 40 minutes (I'm slow) and my baby's running strong. It fit my car BETTER than the original and my car runs cooler in the Philly heat with no modifications. Thanks Mike, like I said "you can't go wrong with Mike's Fan"

Another thing to keep in mind is that the fan tables are different for the 03-04 and 05-06 in the tune. I can help walk you through the settings if you have HP Tuners.
