Welcome to the forum ....

A custom tune is one that is programmed into your computer from someone one time vs having a hand held unit that you can change at will. Custom tunes are normally done with a dyno so they squeeze out more.

Sure, there may be a few extra HP available from a custom tune but I'm not sold on having being locked into one tune and not being able to do anything about it without going back to the person that did it. I like having the option of changing tunes and various parameters when I want to. Of course this thought process goes out the window if you have done drivetrain mods. For mods, there is always a better benefit from having someone watching everything that is happening in the motor and making the appropriate changes.

CONGRATS and WELCOME, Steve . . . from Southern Arizona

As I understand it, a "Custom" or "Performance" Tune recalibrates the computer for, among other things, a higher performance level and a cooler running temperature.

Once again, WELCOME to the forum.

No tuner in my area or close.I have a Diablo prediater and I feel I got my moneys worth by buying it.Its faster and shifts better and I like it.If you have a good tuner close to you it would be better but if not the Diablo is worth the money.Of coarse its just my opinion.....

Dragon, will a hand held adjust the speedo when changing to 4:56 gears in a 05 ?

Hmmm, not really sure. I know that I have used the same Superchips tuner for a few years on my Silverado, 03, 05 and now my 04 SSR so it has more than paid for itself. I know that when I hook it up to my 04 it does ask about tire sizes to change the speedometer accordingly but I don't remember gearing. If nothing else you could figure out the corrections needed for gearing by changing the computed tire size. Not sure if it only affects 03-04 in this area, I kind of think there was an issue with the 05-06 and any speedeometer changes with all tuners but not sure they got it hacked now or not.

Best bet is to ask the manufacturer when inquiring about your specific model tuner, there are a few out there.
