i picked up a used diablo tuner for my ssr. has one of the older versions of software installed.
currently have an email to diablo asking what the updates will do, but wanted to ask if anyone has continued to use an older model, and not updated the software.
they want $99+shipping to update it, and i feel that it isnt worth it.
if diablo would update for free and i pay shipping, then its worth it. but to pay 1/3 of the price of a new tuner, just to update.......
hopefully a local shop can update..
i have ran the 87octane tune for a few weeks. then just installed the performance tune on saturday (along with a tank of 93octane). and certainly feel a difference. but want to know if anyone else has updated.

Which version is it?
Hey Joey, does it have the same parameters as the file I sent you? From some of the revision history stuff, most of the updates appear to be internal housekeeping, not performance updates.
I haven't a clue what the answer to your question is, but if you post the version, someone might be able to help... I suspect mine is the current version: v.9r08 (note the revision history only goes to v.9r07).

geoff- the parameters you gave me were "close" to what was programmed in the tuner. so i didnt think much of it. everything was set to the same #'s you sent me.
all i did was enter the pre-programmed tune. i did go through and check the #'s.
xs cash-- do you know what version is programmed into your tuner?

I did not know they charge for updates, SuperTune is free.
From what I understand, the $99 update charge is to swap out the tuner you send them for a newer version of the same tuner model. The CROM files (base images that install into the handheld tuner itself) have grown to the point that the older unit's memory size are too small to hold the new CROM files.
The update is to get you a unit with the larger memory capacity and the ability to use any of the newer CROM files they release.
The CROM files are "free" from they website as long as your unit is capable of handling the new larger file size.
The update feature is via downloading a CROM file and then using their web updater program (using a serial cable or a USB-to-Serial converter) to connect to the handheld tuner. They sell a "kit" with the USB-to-Serial converter and a AC-to-DC power transformer that lets you update your handheld tuner from your PC/laptop.

If you buy a Predator new from DiabloSport then updates are free and you can just buy USB cord from Radio Shack and up date it from your PC. If you buy it used you gotta pay. Makes sense from a business perspective...

funny thing about that. whose to say i havent had this tuner for 6yrs from another vehicle that uses u7193? (there are multiple uses for this tuner). but no mention from diablo about free udpates.
email from diablo today explained the hardware upgrade. but he didnt answer my question about if the upgrade was necessary.
oh well. ssr might be for sale. so this thing can stay what it is for now.

I think (if I recall correctly, it's been a few years) you have to register the programmer on-line when you buy it and then you can download the upgrades. I'm not sure. Here is the direct e-mail for the tech I worked with there when I was trying to get them to fix my speedo for my new gears. His name is Mike... great guy.
already talking to one fool there who thinks his pedestal is taller than my house.
i understand the $99 charge if they are completely upgrading the internals so the tuner will be usb ready (because right now it isnt). sad part is, the guy doesnt mention all that when he first responded to my email.
he just said it was $99+shipping to upgrade. which i thought was a little expensive for something that can be bought new for $300 now. so i asked why, then he proceeded to jump on his high horse in his response.
i was thinking it was just a software upgrade. so if there were 7revisions since mine was new, and they wanted to charge me $100 for this one, would they charge me again and again when new software came out....didnt realize i would be able to do it myself after the hardware was changed out.
guess i learned something today about diablo tuners.
I just had my Diablo upgraded. To newest software via ups kit was 25$ + ship
U could do it online 4 free
yeah. i could do it online IF my tuner was usb supported. but it isnt.
hence, the $99 charge to upgrade the hardware.
oh well. the price you pay for a used tuner.
The Diablo Predator is still uses a serial connection to perform updates. I had to update the CROM file on two newly purchased Predator units (one for my 2004 SSR and one for my 2010 Camaro). The USB-to-Serial converter they sell is just a regular USB device that provides a serial interface on the PC/laptop side of the connection.
They've tested and "support" the one they sell, but if your PC/laptop already has a serial port (DB9 or DB25 [with DB25 to DB9 cable]) it will work.
Again, the $99 upgrade charge is not to USB enable anything! It's to upgrade the internals of the Predator so that it can store the newer and larger CROM image files they supply (free) on their website.
Here's a posting from their website that describes what the $99 hardware upgrade "does":
Owners of older GM gas Predators can now send their tools in for a $99 hardware upgrade. (Any tools sent in that are locked to another vehicle will be charged an additional $50 unlock fee)
This allows anyone with a U7193, U7195, U7198 or U7192 with a 1.XX or 2.XX revision to have their tool upgraded to use the latest 9rXX revisions.
These newer revisions allow you to datalog to the Predator, or to use the Predator as a pass thru logging device and live stream data to our Dataviewer software.
It also adds the ability for these tools to hold up to 5 custom tunes in addition to the canned tunes.
Other features are a vastly improved read/write procedure and the most up to date tunes.
This upgrade also makes the Predator internet updateable, so you can download future updates to the tool at home on your PC rather than having to send it in for updates.
