Dodge Viper

Not long ago I was lucky enough to get a ride in a Dodge Viper. Itwas impressive. It pulled hard and had a nice hard clunky shift. It felt like it was all engine/trans.
Last week I was lucky enough to get a ride in Joe's SSR(Left Coast 32/ 2006ssr6sppedorsomething). What a rush! I'm quite sure if he caught that Viper going 20MPH and they both punched it the Viper would go home embarrased that it got spanked by a Chevy Truck. It was about the closest thing to being shot out of a slingshot that I've ever experienced and yes, I've actually been shot out of a slingshot before. He's got the rear end lowered a little bit and all the weight of the truck stays in the rear through the run... the traction is incredible, far better than my stock SSR. I'm pretty sure were doing 110 in 3rd when he shut it down. What really made it so much better than the Viper is that all that power comes on so low in the RPM range and the pull just stays there instead of building as the RPM's build. It felt a helluva lot smoother than the Viper, almost like a train.
Anyone considering to modify thier SSR should seriously consider going with the set up that Joe has: Supercharger, rear springs, throttlebody(I think) etc. The only thing I think I've been in that may be faster is RUF Porsche and I'm not so sure it was faster. And the SSR with Joe's mods cost less than half the price.

Joe, my hat is off to you and whenever I want to make something run like a scalded-ass-ape I know who to call!

Thanks for the compliments on the SSR. I enjoyed the coffee and always love to take the SSR out and blow the dust out of it. Next time the coffee is on me!

Well Joe what is the numbers on your SSR, The tracks have been open for a long time, I run yesterday at the Super Chevy at Indy, Man what a drag strip, After my first run a camera crew was shooting some video and I came back up for my 2nd. run and they went all over my SSR, interviewed me, Shot the inside of the truck and taped my full run, But man was it hot, Had my laptop on the seat and the air going into the super charger was way to high to get any 12's

Double-L - It looks like I am just going to have to bite the bullet and make the 2 1/2 hour drive up to California Speedway and fight the lines. They are so booked up because of opening late with the new drag strip that they don't have any openings for the private track day this year. It is so hot at all of these strips right now, they are located in the desert.

Maybe a local member knows of a good coastal track that will be cool at night for a couple of good runs??

Well it didn't take me that long to get to Indy, About half that, They were over 200 cars running DOT, I was the only SSR, Thought I was going to cook setting in the lane, I was looking at my run, The air intake was 178*, My engine was 175*, Engine droped to 172 at 103 mph but the air intake only droped to 174, My timming went to 50+, Would like to meet you and race with you but to far to drive, Did I say it was hot!

Double-L - The temps out here are throught the roof also. It is actually best to race all winter out here. All of the strips are about the same distance from me, about a 2 1/2 hour drive and all are packed. I have a few friends that have been going to the tracks up North and say you are lucky to get get 2 maybe 3 runs in they are so packed. They are all overheating in the staging lanes.

Wish you were closer and we had a good sea level track. Carlsbad used to be a rocks throw from my new house, we need another strip here in San Diego County. The temp cools off nice at night from the ocean breeze and the elevation is right near sea level.

You know, I absolutely LOVE my SSR... (BUT!) no way is an SSR going to outdue a Viper. I drove a Viper on the California Speedway race track and let me tell ya, no way. Either the guy you rode with had a bunk engine or he doesn't know how to shift gears.

But no one can top this! Be sure to watch the torque on the keys... Ford GT

Zoe - I know I cannt compete with the Viper on a road course but my SSR is pretty fast in the straights. You are more then welcome to stop by for a ride.

i might just have to take you up on that. i'll have to get my courage up first. looks like you put a lot of work into your SSR. wasn't trying to "challenge" you but i just shook my head and said, huh? when mention of the Viper came up. i know the new Vette can definitely compete with the Viper, but the SSR is so much heavier. i'd welcome a ride though.

Zoe:

Guys/gals out there, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe if we are talking about the standand 400hp LS2 Corvette, then the Viper wins out clearly....but that's an apples to oranges comparison IMHO.

However, if we now toss the 505hp Z06 Corvette into the mix....to be more of an apples to apples comparison....then I believe it's bye, bye Viper....ZO6 wins.

I'm not sure if there is a better $value, high-performance PRODUCTION vehicle on the planet at this time, than the 2006 Z06 Corvette.

Got to sit in a Z06 for sale at my local Chevy dealer yesterday. Used - 8000 miles. The tires and cracked rotors tell me they were hard miles.. Couldn't talk them into a test drive though.

The only negative thing to me on the Vette is that it is a corvette. have you noticed that the new c6 looks alot like the back end of the 85 Corvette with the c5 front end on it? Wouldn't it be nice if GM retro styled the corvette to a 63 model? i bet they could not sell them fast enough if they priced them right.

Alot of people buy cars and trucks for the look and the 01-03 Viper GTS was the best looking sports car out there from America. Now I can't say that for the new viper as it looks like a Honda S2000 on steriods.. YUCK!

I'll have to agree with you on not really being crazy about the looks of this latest generation Corvette. In fact that is one reason why I bought the SSR instead, when I actually went to look at the dealership with presumably the assumption that I would buy the Vette.
I also agree that the generation of the Viper that you're talking about was the only car I liked better than the Vette, back at that time.

Well I know 6speed has a fast SSR but right now I have maybe the fastest 5.3 here 13.10's at 105 mph till someone post a better time when the weather cools, But then I plan on 12's but we know our SSR's will never come close to a Viper, I let a guy race my SSR with my Grand National and it wasn't even a race, I have beat a lot of Vettes, Even the mid 12 sec. with a hole shot but a Viper, No weight, 550hp V10, The Z06 comes close at the strip but no banana

Yup, you are right. I had a s2000 and the V just look the same but the body is longer and wider. For some reason, I am 6'1 and I fit in S2000 and when I sit in the Viper Convertible my head was out of the top. haha, I guess the more expensive they are, the smaller cockpit will be!

The Viper I got to ride in was an 01 450hp model... I should have mentioned that as it does make a difference.

You are right about that, I have been asked why do you race your SSR all the time when you have a 10 sec. mint Grand National, There is something about the SSR, Not just cause you are the only one most the time, That does help, A friend said he really likes to run the SSR, I let him make a few passes in it, He runs a 8.20 176 mph Super Pro, There is just something about a SSR, The shooting the Sh*T over a beer or two sounds like fun to

yeah. i was talking about the z06. but it looks so "guy with hairplugs and drinking latte." what happened to the rear end of the vette? is someone from japan designing these now?

you know... they are coming out with a Tesla that's all electric that looks pretty good... http://www.teslamotors.com/index.php?js_enabled=1 0-60 in 4 secs. if these car companies would take a clue here and make something cool looking instead of some silly prius thing they would sell so fast. imagine a retro camaro hybrid like the '69.

That Tesla organization has a LOT of cool products.

They make the "Veypor" digital dash with built in accelerometer for motorcycles and cars. They also make the guts of the Scorpio alrarm systems.

That is a company to watch.
