Greg any chance that we might be able to get auto 5 or 6 speeds for our trucks? Why or why not? The trans you did for me is still going strong and it grabs like no tomorrow but a 6 speed would be fantastic. I think I know what you are going to say but...we'll see.
The short answer is NO, or at least not yet. The 6L80E out of later model trucks and the new camaro would be a nice swap. These units have the control computer inside the trans so the vehicles electronics would need to be changed to support the trans system. There will be some stand alone systems coming to market within the year I am told. The other issue is fitment, this is a larger trans than the 4L60E/4L65E, has different mounting locations, output shaft size, cooler line routing, linkages etc. so a great deal of fabrication would be in order. I don't see enough wrong with our 4 speed automatics to invest the time and money in a conversion to the 6 speed but if you wanted one bad enough it could be done.
Thx my friend I figured that would be the answer. I just wish I could gain my MPG back but certainly not at the loss of the horsepower I have gained. The 4:56's do eat into the RPM and MPG a bit. Best thing I ever did was bring my trans to you for a "beefing" up. r, Lee
To all you SSR owners out there...when the time comes for a trans rebuild or if you just want that SSR to find it's gearing faster, I strongly recommend Greg Ducato's trans shop. Those folks know there stuff. vr,
Greg and Spook, what about a Gear Vendors overdrive bolt on? Don't know if they have one for the R's trans., but I know they will handle high hp!
They have a model that will bolt up to the 6 bolt tailhousing that the SSR transmission uses. An interesting feature is that you can overdrive any of the gears giving you an 8 speed automatic. I'm not sure how much performance could be realized from this, but splitting the first to second ratio could be a help on this trans and having the extra 22 percent overdrive would be a plus with a 4.56 gear. I have not had the extra 3K laying around to invest in this experiment but if I had the money and desire it seems like this could be of benefit to both performance and economy.
My Airstream Motorhome had a GearVender Underdrive/overdrive. In that application is was GREAT.
That was their biggest market for a long time and it sure made a huge difference on a Motor Home. I think this is where they learned about all the improvements required to make these little overdrives so durable. This overdrive section was produced by Laycock and used by Triumph, Jaguar, Volvo and others, even the AMC Pacer. Gear Vendors has taken this to the next level with integrated computer controls and higher strength components.

How much space would this overdrive unit take up & would the hump on the floor need modifying?
I have a Gear Vendors in my F-250 (6-Speed Manual Trans) and wouldn't do without it in that application. It makes things so much nicer. When I was in getting the oil changed in it once, the shop that installed it for me said they have installed one in an SSR. Not sure whose SSR it was..but someone has done it.
