TMZ...Are you getting it dyno'd before the changes occur? Sounds like a good plan.

Update on Engine Mods

We ran into a few snags doing the engine mods, had one of the O2 sensors strip the threads trying to take it out of the old y pipe so had to order a new one. stripped the engine down to the shortblock, swapped out the cams by dropping the tail of the trans down to get enough tilt to clear the front crossmember. Headers were a total nightmare to install even with the heads out of the way, ended up unbolting the motor mounts and jacking the engine up on each side to get them in. Had the drivers side AFR Mongoose head bolted in place had the passenger side head down to the last bolt back against the firewall when the heli-coil threads in the aluminum block broke while just running the bolt down in, had not started to torque it yet. Ordered ARP head stud kit on Joe's recommendation, the stud kit just arrived and will be going in tomorrow, hopefully have it back together my Monday. Still looking for tuner in Northwest either Oregon or Washington, otherwise may have to pull ECM and send out to be tuned. Rainy weather and 30-40 degree temps have not been much help during this project, shop is rain tight but heated only by a portable propane heater.

Check with a local hot rod club, or if not, usually the techs at the Chevy dealer know eho is available and the good ones from the bad ones. Looking forward to good things from your changes.

Go on LS1Tech and you can also try the Hp Tuners Forum for a tuner in your area. Once you find one in your area then do a search for their user name to see what kind of feedback they have. You will find some of the best tuners out there on these two sites.

Update on Engine Mods

My SSR went in the shop in December, after several delays and setbacks including unexpected parts that had to be ordered a headbolt hole in block with broken threads, my mechanic friend getting seriously sick and down for about a month and a half, we are finally going to try to finish it up over the next couple days, going over to the shop in my work clothes with camera in hand, will try to post pictures of it going together tomorrow night, hoping to have it running by Monday afternoon. Once the SSR is done, next project is my 2000 Silverado, going to replace the 4.8L LS motor with a 6.0L shortblock then use the heads and cam that came off the LS2 in my SSR should be a big improvement.

Latest Update on Engine Mods

Stopped by Kelly's shop today, the engine is back together and running but has a miss on one cylinder and we can hear at least one loose rocker arm, pulling the valve covers back off tomorrow and tighten all the rocker arms, it sounded wicked even on 7 cylinders that big cam definitely has a lope to it and those Kooks headers sound great, weather permitting I should be lighting up the new Toyo Proxes tires tomorrow afternoon. Will post a sound or video clip as soon as we get it dialed in. Season openner at Woodburn Dragstrip is March 8th, I will be there weather permitting hoping for some 12 second time slips this year. Also any of you familiar with the TV show Pinks and Pinks All Out on Speed Channel, they are going to be at Woodburn Dragstrip in Woodburn, OR on July 4-5, might be a chance to get the SSR seen on TV.

TMZSSR,

I am also running the Harland Sharp rockers. If you did not modify the valve covers on the inside before re-installing them, there's your problem. There are spherical-shaped bosses for the bolt holes that hold the coil packs in place. You will need to grind them down so the rockers will clear them. I had 1 that was so bad it was holding the valve open slightly. When you do it, grind them ALL. On both sides. The larger body rockers are just too close for comfort otherwise. If you find that this was the problem, also pull the pushrods and check them for straightness. You might have a bent one now. Also check for signs of contact where the pushrod comes through the head. Mine were pretty close and I'm not running as much lift as you are.

Also, how was the install on the Kooks headers? Any issues or clearance problems? I will be installing mine soon and would like to know what to watch for.

Lifters all adjusted and working now

After pulling the valve covers back off we found the problem, the two rockers closest to the firewall on the drivers side were loose ( that was the side I tightened while Kelly was doing the other side, my fault ) everything is fine now, no clearance issues with the valve covers on the AFR Mongoose heads, maybe the rail the valve covers ride on is smidge higher on them. The headers were a nightmare to put in, Kelly fought with them for a total of about 10 hours before he found the combination to get them in, he said he could save others a lot of time installing them with his directions on what finally worked, I will have him explain the procedure and write it down and post here once I get it from him, hopefully save you some time on yours. All that left to do to it now, is replace the power steering hose, Kelly made sure nothing was touching the headers but the p/s hose was close enough that it burst while breaking in the motor, he is going to attach the new hose to the firewall with an insulated clamp to route it farther away from the header pipe.

Its Up and Running Now

Well, I drove my SSR home today, then drove it about 30 miles to town and back to gas it up. Runs great but still needs to have the computer Dyno Tuned to maximize the new parts combo, have to call a couple possible tuners that were suggested to me. Kelly and I made a few adjustments using my laptop and HP Tuners software, we brought the idle up to about 800 rpm because of the big cam 228 duration @ .050 - .600 lift, has an absolutely nasty sounding lope, and it revs up much quicker now. I have 2 small issues that I am sure Joe Delano can help me with next time I talk to him 1. the check engine light is on from the lopy idle, seems to me there was mention of a setting in HP Tuners to prevent that 2. Have to give it a little blip on gas pedal when cranking it over to get it fired up, Kelly thinks we need to tweak the pulse width on the injectors to fix that one but wanted an expert opinion before we try it because it runs great as soon as it has been running a few seconds. The Kooks Headers are probably going to annoy my neighbors but they sound awesome, Kelly heard me downshift and get on it as I was passing the Dairy Queen and that is a mile from his house !

I would be very interested in your input on the Kooks header installation, especially the routing of the power steering hose. Thanks.
