Why do you use the hand brake at all?
I have never used the hand brake ever in any of my vehicles (auto or manual)

LET ME TELL YOU A STORY ABOUT THE USE OF A HAND BRAKE. THIS WAS TOLD TO ME BY A C.H.P OFFICER ABOUT A YEAR OR SO AGO. A OFFICER IN HIS OFFICE AND MOST OF THE OTHERS NEVER USE THERE PARK BRAKE. BUT ONE OF THE OFFICERS IN HIS DEPARTMENT HAD NEVER TAKEN A DAY OFF FOR VACATION OR SICK LEAVE FOR YEARS. BUT HE DICIDED TO TAKE HIS FAMILY ON A VACATION. HE WENT OUT AND BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 1 TON P'UP AND A LARGE CAB OVER CAMPER TO GO ON THIS GREAT VACTION. THEY TRAVELED ALL OVER THE U.S. AFTER BEING GONE FOR ABOUT A MONTH OR SO. THEY WERE ON THER WAY BACK AND STOPED TO GO DOWN TO THE BEACH. THEY ALL CHANGED INTO THERE SWIM GEAR AND STARTED TO LEAVE. BUT HIS SON SAID HE NEEDED TO GO TO THE POTTY AND WENT INSIDE THE CAMPER. HE DID HIS THING AND CLOSED THE DOOR TO THE CAMPER AND RAN TO CATCH UP WITH HIS FAMILY. WITCH HAD ONLY GOTTEN ABOUT 20 YARDS OR SO. AS THEY WERE ALL WALKING DOWN TO THE BEACH THEY HEARD A ALLFUL NOISE AS THE LOOKED UP AT THE TOP OF THE CLIFF THER WAS THERE BRAND NEW TRUCK AND CAMPER WITH ALL THER BELONGINGS GOING OVER IT AND INTO THE OCEAN......... YOU DO HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT THE PARK PIN IS ONLY ABOUT A 1/4 OF AN INCH THICK ........ PLEASE USE YOUR HAD BRAKE...................

Here are other stories about the parking brake too:

1) California Highway Patrol officer Justin Morgan said the man, who was in his 40s, was attempting to move the Ford F450 but the parking brake stuck. With the truck in neutral, the man got out and stood alongside the driver's side of the vehicle, using his hands to try to free the brake. Suddenly, as the brake was freed, the truck rolled in reverse and the man was either knocked down by the driver's side door or he fell and was run over by the truck, Morgan said. The man suffered head and chest injuries and died later at the hospital.

2) The left rear brake assembly was stuck because the parking brake failed to release on that wheel. I've written in this column many times about the risks of rusted or stuck parking brake cables and mechanisms because of the salt used on our roadways in winter. Rust and corrosion can bind and stick the parking brake mechanism so that even though the foot pedal or hand lever return to their 'off' position, the parking brake is still engaged on one or both of the rear wheels.

I use the hand brake when parking on a hill. It helps eliminate the load on the parking gear. But other than that i don't....

At one time I had a car that by using the hand brake. It would adjust the rear brakes when I used it. So I say the brake is there. USE IT. If you don't use it. It will rust up. It is checked for state inspections in VT.

parking brake

Guess you don't need 'em if you live in FlatLand. But in the land of hills AND salt, I'v always used my parking brake, and never had one rust or stick, on lots of different vehicles, some of which I had for 20 years. They only do that if you don't use them till that one time you think you need to.

Virginia Beach averages 12 feet above sea level
I think Sicklerville, NJ is less than 100 feet.

Hand brake is essential on steep hills with a 6 speed. Drastically cuts down on clutch strain taking off at at an uphill traffic light. Engage the clutch, release the brake, no problems stalling and backing up, or nailing the gas to keep it from backing up.

Yeah - the only time I've ever needed to do that in the SSR was when the clutch pedal would go down but not come back up

Use of hand brake

I use the hand brake to turn off the driving lights, that's about all.
