Exhaust Cutout?

The new Z06 has a has a feature that I like! When you floor it, the muffler has an internal valve that opens and lets the exhaust blow stright through for more hp and sound.

I am thinking of putting an electricly controlled cutout in front of the muffler, routing beside the muffler, splicing back to each tailpipe to exhaust out the tailpipes, not out the side.

I really like the sound of the stock exhaust 90% of the time, no drone that I keep hearing about, listen to the stereo, etc, but there are times when I would really like to get on it and go LOUD. Floor it, flip the switch!

My muffler guy here says that did such a good job on the '04 when I put the 2in & 2out muffer on it says he can do the job for about $300 with me supplying the cutout, 3 "Y" pipes, one short flange pipe, etc. JPEG has the cutout for about $150 plus $30 each for the "Y" pipes.

Has anyone done something like this, is it feasilbe? Comments?

Of course my wife says she likes it just like it is, "Why do you want to make a $30,000 truck sound like a $1000 truck?" I keep trying to tell her it's a "point thing", guys get "points" for loud.

The louder the better. My wife does not like riding in the because it is loud. Now, there is another reason to not have mufflers .

Check this website.

Waldron's antique exhaust, car exhaust, truck exhaust, exhaust pipes, mufflers

In addition to exhaust systems for just about any old car they have a system you may like.
This system is an exact replica of '70 GTO option.

Waldron's Cutout Muffler

Harleyguy, thank you for the heads-up. I called Waldron's, they do not make a single in, dual out with the cut out feature, it would be great if they did and it would be on order now. She said that they would not have room in the muffler for the additinal outlet. I guess I could modify back like the '03, '04 single in, single out to a split in the tailpipes.

I am reluctant to go with a muffler that I don't know how it will sound and modify the system. I really like the sound of the stock muffler on the '05.

cut-outs

Hi jack, as I posted before, we have the quick-time cutout on our SSR but we only have the one. It is attached , the Y-pipe,ahead of the muffler and follows the drive shaft and dumps down and out just before the rear end.
If you go to the thread on "Exhaust Cut-outs" posted by: Rocky Top08, look at the second post where i told him about the prices and the phone number of who to call.
The first photo is the valve( electric cutout) and the Y-pipe
The second photo shows where it dumps out and down.
PM us if you have any more questions.

Cut out pictures

Downshifter,

Thank you for the pictures. My muffler guy thinks he can fit the pipe in past the stock muffler. He said it would be easier if I would put a smaller muffler, but I don't want to give up the stock sound. I see that you moved the muffler to the side, I suppose that is what he is planning. How much smaller is your muffler than stock?

Thank you,
Jack

Go To 5 inch tips, double wall without sound suppressing drilled holes and you will be surprised how good it sounds I used on sale closeout Bosels but Mike in AZ has the 5 inchers. GM did a good job keeping the 400 hp LS2 exhaust quite with the 4 inch tips.

Glad that I could help with the pictures. The mufflers that we have on there now are Magnaflow and I think they are the same size.

DownShifter,

Thank you for sharing your muffler aplication.....Very Cool

How loud is it with the valve fully opened? Cannon Shot Loud? Or do the cats muffle much of the wide open experience?

How does the car drive with the valve fully opened? Any power gains? Does it affect the torque band?

Thank you for sharing

Hi Mr. OctogonMan,
1-YES loud, but the best part is that it is controlable.
2-NO they don't
3-We haven't noticed any problems driving with them fully open.
4-Power gain? that is hard to measure because we have done other things also.
5-Torque band-No, but we have never put it on a dyno.
Hope this answers your questions.

Hi DownShifter,

Thank you for the info....I'm interested in going Loud But controlling the sound level is something my neighbors will certainly appreciate.....

Where did you install the control switch for the cutouts? How did you route the cable into the cockpit?

Thanks for sharing

Disappointment

I took the "R" down to the Muffler shop today and put it on the rack to see if what I wanted done was practical. It wasn't. The owner said that he could put the cutout on and spit two more tailpipes and put turn downs behind the wheels, but that he did not recommend going back into the existing tailpipes because of disturbing the flow of exhaust in the pipe and causing possible backpressure from eddies or burbles. I don't want another set of pipes because of space problems installing Mike's Spare and I don't want to just turn down the pipe under the truck.

He suggested that because I liked the sound of the stock muffler to go ahead and run it until it gave problems and then install the Waldron Muffler with the internal cutout single in, single out and split to two pipes like the '04. That is now the program. My wife is happy because she didn't want me to do it anyway, and especially just a turndown, too loud in the truck.

On the positive side, I told her that I guessed I would just go ahead and order Mike's Spare, no adverse reaction.

Real Duals with cutouts.

I prefer DMH of Georgetown, Ohio. Having Dealt with Quick Time and their Bad Attitude, I never dealt with them again.

That sounds like the system I have drawn up for my 5.7Hemi Jeep Grand Cherokee , I cant see how going back into the original pipe from the cutout will affect anything , apart from Labour Time & welding skill of course

It already has the k&n induction kit & a remap so any extra BHP is always welcome , QTP want $176 to ship the valves to the UK though (ouch) .

We just bought an '05 with cutouts. The switch is laying on the floor under the drivers seat. We need to find a way to mount it. I'll try to get pics from under the car tomorrow. It also has a high performance chip and the controller/programmer came with it.

Would like to see some pictures of your system.....

Can you describe the sound you get with them open?

Thank you..
