Curious, has anyone designed and run an exhaust system eliminating a muffler(s) on their R? In other words, just a simple straight through system from the Cats to the Tips. Wondering how it sounds and the pros and cons regarding the change in back pressure etc. Thanks for any info.

I did mine about a year and a half ago. Took off the muffler and the sound is incredible. You will have no problem with back pressure. It sounds mean and was just the sound I was looking for. I think several others on this forum have done that as well.

I also ran mine as a straight pipe system about 1 1/2 years ago.
I didn't quite like the sound so switched to the Magnaflow cat back.
Got the sound I wanted.

blknblu, I know it's hard to describe a sound, but does your sound more mechanical, tinny, raspy, hollow as opposed to a mellow purr, soft rumble, glass pack kinda sound ?

I have seen posts where some SSR owners ran straight pipes with an "X" pipe to balance the flow.
I would like to hear a sound clip.
Mike Powell said it sounds just like the side exhaust he made.
There is a sound clip on here of that.
Read the thread and it is post #5 that has the sound clip.

A member near CqqlSSR named olaferickson did this about a year or so ago and had a sound clip posted here. It sounded very mean and cool at the same time.

It sounds more like a muscle car than anything else. It loud but no as intrusive as you would think.

Tom, he had two Magnaflow Bullets on his.
They were not straight pipes but real close to it.
Here are the pictures.

Good question. Since we do not have inspections in Florida I never have had to worry. Maybe someone with this set up in an "Inspection State" can chime in here.
To clarify what I was thinking of doing was to connect just aft (down stream) of the Y connection, just before where the stock muffler was, which is 3" in dia. at that point. Replace the muffler with a section of 3" pipe and then fabricate a Y section of pipe to again split the flow and connect back to the stock dual outlet piping and out to the tips. Not sure, but doing it this way should not effect emissions testing ......... ??

Do they have any noise restrictions there?
I know in MA if it is to loud = no inspection sticker.
I was pulled over for loud side exhaust many years ago.
I told him it was stock from the factory. He let me go.
I don't know what the complaint is about loud exhaust from the SSR.
People ride Harley's with straight pipes, They get inspection stickers.????

The affect on emissions is a matter of them looking at the exhaust and seeing it was modified - a no go if they want to be a hard case.
Realistically you could do almost anything so long as they just look at the numbers from the exhaust sniffer tube and you have a good set of cats.

Charlie just got back from the coast.
I remember one time that he posted a sound clip of a really big cam he had put in and was running it with a straight exhaust. He was changing things around a lot in
a short period of time then he kind of vanished. Have you heard from him. He was from the town where my dad had his dealership. Mansfield, Ma. He is a big guy.
Later nap time...
Are you the only state that has none? if so, I'm moving there. Scuffy
None here in Hawaii. They do Annual "Safety" Inspections, but no sniffer test or visual on the muffler.
I spoke to ggoat too and he went with the 3" straight pipe in place of the muffler and loves it. Well, it's not exactly straight, it has to Y for the dual tailpipes.
I'm sure ggoat won't mind me posting part of his PM...
I can't express how PERFECT the straight pipe is. What you describe that you want is EXACTLY how I would describe the straight pipe. It sounds like an old musclecar when idling, it pops and gurgles upon decel, it is quiet when cruising in 6th gear, and when you slam it, it sounds like a cannon shot. It's GREAT.
If you just replace the muffler or the pipe with the stock cats you're NOT going to get what you want no matter WHAT muffler or system you buy. I installed the LOUDEST Flowmaster available at the time, and it was BARELY louder than stock outside, and MUCH louder inside. I tried about 10 mufflers at the time, before I went to straight pipe. The cats muffle a LOT of the engine sound. The straight pipe is QUIETER inside the truck than the Flowmaster was (the Flowmaster accentuated the resonance and deep drone). Again, if you're leaving the stock cats and installing something after the pipes Y together, you're NOT going to get ANYTHING like what you describe that you want. The cats get rid of too much sound alone, and when combined even with a LOUD muffler (such as the Flowmaster, or a race muffler that I tried) the overall sound was VERY sedate. I got rid of the Flowmaster right away. It was a huge learning experience. You could have NEVER convinced me before-hand.
I couldn't ask for a better sounding exhaust, honestly. And, it was $70. All that was done was a Y-pipe was custom made that fits where the stock muffler was. That's it. Nothing more elaborate than that.

Hey Tom, who are you going to blame for making you say that?

Thanks for the feed back! This is really helping me make a decision on going with this type of system or not. No visual or safety inspections here in Calif., that I am aware of. Just emissions testing.

I've had them look underneath on Smog Inspections when I lived in CA. Someone once said, have the stock muffler gutted and the straight tube installed inside the muffler. Seal the muffler back up and make sure the welds are up towards the floor plan.

Great recommendation, Mike.
You are correct, here in Arizona and also in California the technician will do a walk around visual check during the Smog Inspection and a "missing" muffler (along with a loud exhaust sound) would more than likely create an alert.
blknblu,
You guy's have no inspections in Florida. Are you the only state that has none? if so, I'm moving there.

Most of the states here in the southeast have no vehicle emission/safety inspection for annual licensure. The larger cities (e.g., Atlanta and Nashville) do have an inspection of some sort. We would be glad to welcome you anywhere around here.
