Is there just a muffler I can put on for a nice sound. I don't want a cat back system but just a muffler. Can someone give me make and part#.I've been to a few auto parts places but they tell me only cat back. Thanks for what ever help you can give me......

I installed a Flowmaster Super 44 - stainless steel muffler - and Mike's (Mike from AZ) tips - and LOVE the sound. The muffler was $74.23 from Streetside Auto.com and included free shipping. Installation to weld it in was about $60.

Just about any GOOD muffler shop can replace the OEM muffler. I used the Flowmater 40 but I had 2 mufflers installed with a cross over pipe and Mike n AZ tips. You cant beat Mikes Tips for the increase in sound. LOVE IT.
I have used an electric cut out valve witch I have made to a bypass of the muffler. From the cut out valve I have a 3" tube over the muffler, and then back to the system. Gives not so loud sound that I thought it would give, so I always have the valve open. Except for the anually inspection we have to do here....

The exhaust muffler and tailpipes on the SSR are stainless steel and are basically good for the life of the vehicle. If you replace the muffler, replace with a stainless steel, do not mix dissimilar metals in the system. The cat back system from Magnaflow sells for about $995 plus freight. It has stainless steel 2 1/2" pipes from the muffler back and a 3" inlet pipe on the front of the muffler. It uses a 14" body 5"x8" oval, 3" single inlet, dual 2 1/2" outlets. That same muffler is available from Performance Peddler, All Categories (click on catagories) for about $100 or less shipped.
Be aware that the exhaust system on you '05 is a highly engineered system to produce a nice rumble and very little noise at cruise with the top up. If you replace the muffler be prepared to have a "drone" in the cab at cruise and maybe around town. I put this muffler on my truck, ran it about 40 miles, my wife refused to ride in the truck. The muffler is directly below the passenger seat. Fortunately I saved my stock muffler and reinstalled it. Now she has agreed to make the HOT ROD POWER TOUR and the International Rally in Flagstaff.
Before you invest in changing your muffler, ride in an SSR that has that muffler on it, with the top up at cruise. Your wife will thank you.

Dynomax VT
I think Slicks2003 put the Dynomax VT on his truck (along with a few other goodies) and was happy with the sound. I like the concept, but would like to take a ride in someone's truck with it installed... It's like an automatic cut-out built in to the muffler
Here is the thread where Slicks2003 discussed the muffler: new muffler?

I put the magnaflow muffler on mine just after I purchased it....sounds much better than stock...but, my wife is the one that said it was not "rumbly" enough...so she wanted a Super 44 for hers....after about a year I changed mine to the Super 44 also....great sound...and Mikes stainless 5" tips just complete the installation...and yes there is a drone...if you're an old Hot Rod guy, you'll love it!!
i put a single chamber cherry bomb on mine with the bosal tips sounds amazing ...love pulling up to the ricers now....the bosal tips sound is amazing although i am going to replace them with mikes stainless tips because the bosals rust to fast
I was looking for the old mid/late 70s Chevy V8 dual exhaust sound and I went a complete (front to rear) “True Dual” exhaust system from StainlessWorks.net. This is a bolt on system that is specifically made for the SSR. The system includes long tube headers, dual high flow catalytic converters, dual turbo mufflers, all the hangers, clamps, and 4” polished tips. Everything is 304 stainless. They have two options, chambered mufflers or for a more aggressive sound you can specify that you want “Straight through Turbo Mufflers. Yep, I went with the straight through.
I was planning to receive the system and drop everything off at the muffler shop; however, days before the package arrived, my fuel sending unit went out. This meant the fuel tank had to be removed to get to the fuel pump. The dealership wouldn’t deal with the exhaust and the muffler shop didn’t want to touch the fuel tank and most importantly, I wanted it done NOW, lol.
So, I decided to tackle the job myself and really glad I did too. As noted in the supplied instructions, in order to remove the OEM Headers, the motor mounts have to be unbolted so the engine can be lifted (about 6 inches, one side at a time). Once I read this, I was glad I didn’t have the muffler shop lifting my engine.
So, 7 hours later (including dropping the fuel tank and changing the pump, and of course playing with the system with only the headers mounted, hehehe) I was very happy with the sound and I took it to the shop the next day and had everything welded (may not have been needed but my preference). The SW exhaust has a very nice idle and running rumble, zero highway drone, and it’s impressively (loud) under heavy acceleration. With all the sound being piped to the tail, there is actually little difference inside the cab from OEM at idle and running down the road. However, starting it up in the garage or with the top down and/or when I put my foot in it… I LIKE IT. I have $2300 into it (at the time) but it is now a true dual system with Headers, haven't dyno'ed yet but I am certain it took me over the 400HP mark just by opening up the exhaust and installing a K&N filter.
Final note:
Due to the high flow Cats, the rear O2 sensors need to be disabled so they do not set an ECM code/Service light. ECM codes will cause a failure during state inspection. Basically, the rear sensors only measure the difference between what is going into the cats verses what is coming out; they do not affect the rich and leaning process; this is done with the front O2sensors. Disabling them (via programming scanner) simply stops them from reporting and cost me $100. I have passed two (Texas) state inspections that included the tail pipe sniffer/wand with no problems. After all, the inspection exhaust test is performed at idle and the Cats apparently perform their job just fine at low RPMs.
I have no doubt that I could have found something less expensive. I wanted Long Tube Headers and True Duals.
Still, I didn't pulled the trigger until I read an article about a Chevy Camaro dealership routing their cars through Stainless Works for a exhaust upgrade prior to sale. I am happy with mine.

Will Stainless Works also do an installation on a SSR
Their "about us" link on their web page says the following:
Please contact our experts to work with you in designing a product or system or actually install them on your vehicle. We have five bays and a dozen individually locked and heated garages to store and work on your most prized collector or show vehicle.
I can only assume that the address on their website contact information is where their factory is located; however, it may only be office/sales information. I received mine in two boxes via UPS and based on the provided instructions, it was very obvious that they had done a SSR.

Wonder how far that is from Defiance, OH...drop "Marty" a PM and see if he and Dee can check them out.
I recorded a sound clip with my phone about 20 feet behind the truck. It's not the best of quality from the phone source but I can email it if you PM me an address.

This is very nice.. I'm actually thinking the same right now^. There's a lot of suggestions on this thread. Thanks guys.. The only problem is that, all of your suggestions are awesome and now I got a lot of option on what to do on my car mufflers. (Its hard to decide which one).

SSR Exhaust Modification
I talked to Magnaflow about adding a dual in/dual out as I wanted to reduce the backpressure of the stock system. And I didn't want a drone like I had in previous installations on other cars. Magnaflow recommended their #12568. 2 1/2" in & out, 22" long. The longest muffler in the dual in/dual out line. They felt it would be the best for the application. The internal of the muffler is an X with serrated pipes surrounded by mesh packing and an insulation wrap.
Went to Rancho Truck and Muffler in Temecula, CA and told them I wanted to run the cat outlets directly into the dual inlet muffler and run the dual outlets directly to each tip. They gave me an estimate of $425, $300 for labor and $117 for the muffler. They completed the job in 3 hours.
I inspected the completed installation and the car was up on the hoist. Very good looking pipe work. All new 2 1/2" pipe from the cats into the muffler, and new pipe from the muffler outlet to where the Y was cut out of the exhaust pipes.
The sound is very quiet until you stand on it. No drone and very pleasant in the cab. At freeway speed, a deep rumble, still quieter than stock. The car feels like it is breathing easier even when just pulling out from a stop sign. Very pleased with the sound and throttle response.
Off to Joe's tomorrow to see exactly how much improvement there has been.
This was a very good return from the performance/dollar invested evaluation.
