MY SSR vs Dodge Ram 3500 Turbo Diesel
So this friend of mine has a Dodge Ram 3500. I'm not really familiar with the car but he says it's a stock turbo charged and it's Diesel. According to him he has added 2 "chips", some exhaust work and a K&N filter. His pre-mod HP was around 350. He tells me that he Dyno'ed it last month after the mods and he has 475 HP with 550+ torque all at 3500 rpm. He wants to put it up against mine.
My questions:
Is it possible to gain 100+ HP with these chips? Is the Diesel Dyno measured the same as regular cars? Should I do it?
His car weighs over 8000 lbs. Even if his numbers are accurate ( he has the graph to prove it) I think I can take him. he laughed at me and said no way.
My SSR: Magnacharger, true dual exhaust/muffler, billet power servo and forth gear servo.

You will walk away from him no problem. Now, I have seen dyno sheets for Turbo Diesel Trucks that were over 1000 RWHP. To get that much power they need bigger turbos and Propane Injection.

with Joe. You should walk him pretty good. His torque and traction might get a few feet jump on you, but then it should be all over for him. I P/O'd a guy with a Ram SRT 10 last week from a stop light--twice.

I want to hear the outcome of this. My 06 2500 Ram 4X4 is strong and I`ve seen tuners that advertize 160 HP, but the truck weighs a lot. Great for towing, but I think a supercharged SSR of any year will win. Be sure to let us know.......Paul
Funny a guy I know that races a super pro has a Dodge Ram 3500 he pulls his car with and for fun he runs the truck in super sport sometimes, He has a lot done to it and it is fun to watch run, When he starts to spool up the black smoke and the sound is something else but it won't come close to beating your SSR
I have a Cummins diesel here at my house with a stock turbo and it made 501rwhp on the dyno and 1049tq. Your buddy is wrong on the tq. To imporve the cummins to 475 you will almost double the factory tq of 500ft pounds.
Now I will say this if you run it out the big end you should get back by him but that won't be until after 110mph..
Here is my buddies truck, Gus truck is itweaked some and watch what he does to this viper at the dragstrip.
At the end of the video you will see all this stuff listed about his truck, but this was just done on the new motor setup. The run was on the stocker..
thanks for the advice. I just don't buy the fact that he can gain that much (100+) HP with just programming. Is it possible?
the reason he can gain that much is the ability to dump fuel and turn the boost up in the motor via the tuner. On the 12v motors they have a plate that you install...

I saw the same thing done to a 350Z here on 441 it just blew its doors off. I knew they could make power but was shocked to really see it. That guy was almost crying he got stomped so bad by a truck...........Basicly his mouth wrote a check his azz couldn't cover. All it takes is cash, he with the big bucks gos the fastest..................................

yep..Get mim to get on his diesel some before you decide to tryhim. If it will black smoke pretty good "And I meen pretty good, I can stop 4 lanes of traffic with mine" I would let the subject die.
Here is my sleeper.. The only real thing to give it away from looking at it is the 5"-6" turbo back exhaust.

The link to the video does not work for me, will try it later.
So you are telling me that this guy can gain 100+ HP for as little as $1500 worth of mods (chips)? Unbelievable. Is that unique to these Diesel trucks? Why can't we do it? Excuse my ignorance, new to this performance stuff and not very mechanical. Root canals I can do but car mechanics I pay for .

Not to make overly simplistic, but a gas engine is always burning at approx. 14.7:1 Air to fuel. So anything you do has to move tremendous amounts of air and fuel thru the engine. A diesel varies the air fuel mix and is relatively easy to change in modern engines with chips...more fuel, more power and torque. Lots of black smoke! Also BTU content of diesel fuel is significantly higher than gas. Lots of other stuff enters into this, but I'll leave more technical discussion to those who can explain it better.
Our trucks are not turbocharged. By controlling the wastegate on a turbo vehicle and increasing boost and adding more fuel you make more HP.
You can gain 120hp and 350tq on level 5 with the Edge Attitude on a Cummins for $750...
On the gas motor in the truck there is nothing there to increase the amount of air being forced into the motor like what a turbocharger does so the only thing a tuner does for it is add some timing and a little fuel...

That's what I thought. Thanks for the explanation. I knew it had to have something to do with the type of fuel/engine.

My "eldest son" has the same 3500 Turbo Diesel, quad, and it is quite a mover. Acknowledge your buddy's ability, and his truck and then race for the fun of it. People who underestimate their challenger often are defeated. I've beaten faster cars and trucks than my SSR by out-driving them, but I am also surprised by how fast a lot of vehicles are nowadays.
I wish my Silverado were a diesel. Not only would my occasional towing duties be a no-sweat prospect, but I could scrounge up cheap fuel from the local restaurants.
Anyway, the SSR is not as fast as you might think in stock form. I almost had my butt handed to me by an Avalanche of all things. In the lower RPMs, the SSR is a pig. With the 6 speed, even in 1st gear, I had to wait for it to spool up a bit in RPMs before I was going to be able to pull ahead of him. (I did smoke him -- twice actually).
The butthead was attempting to pass at a red light on the shoulder. The first time he was using the right turn lane to try and jump the light. I really need that 4.10 gear set! (I do not want to have to screw with the computer problems with 4.56 gears. 4.10's and some tuning should give me what I want)

I wouldn't ever think of running my Turbo Deisal Dodge like that, but if you ever need something really big towed, then that Dodge is the answer.
I always think it is funny when someone comes up beside my truck and wants to drag. My truck is for hauling and towing, not dragging, that is what the SSR s for.
Oh sure I will race him if he wants but to make it fir after the race, he has to tow a fully loaded 24ft. utility trailer.

Yep, I tow with mine, too. Lots of highway stuff, but it might be fun to play with a tuner. I did read sometime back, that most of the auto tranny problems they have with Dodge trucks id due to the power added by tuners. Stck shift trucks don`t overcome the tranny with one. Still. a stock 06 like mine, makes 325 HP and 610 TQ. It`s a lot quicker with 3.73 gears than my 97 Diesel was with 4.10`s. Anyone see Audi win the Isle of Mann last year with a diesel?........Paul

SSR VS Dodge Diesel
I took my SSR to the drags a couple weeks ago and was happy with my 13.79@100.8 run then an ugly looking Dodge Diesel with a big stack up the passenger side of his cab fumagated the starting line with black smoke and ran 12.09@110 they may be fast when pumped up and may tow heavy loads but they still are and always will be butt ugly, we definitely beat them in looks and coolness.

Dude, mine has the blower. I doubt an Avalanche can do the job.

$1500?
Try 180+rwhp and over 280ft/lbs from a $399 Predator!
Our Predator/power puck stack combos are under $600 and will add up to 250+rwhp and over 400(!) ft/lbs of torque at the wheels. We have a few customers making over 800rwhp and 1000+ ft/lbs, and these trucks will move!
Thanks
Mike

What will a Predator do for my 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 Turbo Diesel (crew cab) with the Allison 6 speed auto transmission?
It is pretty quick for stock but I don't think it will beat my 2005 SSR.
That is what keeps me racing the SSR and trying to make it more respectable, The SSR doesn't get any respect on it's own form, You just have to keep saying I can, I head the same thing way back when I raced a LS2 GTO that had heads worked on, Forced air intake, Super tune and M/T drag radials, I didn't let it get to me I just went out and beat him, Like they say just do it
