Smile Overheating ???

Hello all. Sorry to bring up a question that seems to have been covered but I have just a couple more questions. I just purchased a 2005 SSR and got a scare on my first ride. The engine (6.0L) runs at a steady 210. BUT when I get into stop and go it rises to 240 and I panic. I have a few specific questions.
1. What temp should the engine run at?
2. At what degrees should the fan kick in, low and high speed.
3. Does the computer turn on the fan or a sensor? Can the computer be changed? Are there any sensors that I can put in that will turn it on earlier?

I just picked it up and my local Chevy Dealer is NO help at all. I didn't mention that when I wait along the road for traffic to clear and I can move again at speed the temp comes down to 210 at speed. The fan does work if I turn on A/c and wait a minute or two.

I love the new car but am a little (a lot) nervous about the temp. Car has 3500 miles.

Mike in NC on the way to Hershey PA for the summer.

That's normal, as designed operation. If you have the temp going up to 260, you have aproblem (likely the fan). Excursions to 235 are part of the design.

i wish i could answer those question (because i had the same "problem" when i got my ssr in december), but cutting the AC on usually cools mine down to right below 210.
my ssr always heats up to almost 240 when stopped in traffic. cutting the ac on brings it right down.
i have a 04 with 27k miles on it, and just had the coolant flushed and changed to see if it helped with the temps, but it still does it.

Thumbs up thanks for the link SharpToys

I wondered what was done to the 2006 model, In 4+ years I never get higher than the 210 mark. I have recently been in bumper to bumper traffic that was very slow due to a traffic accident on I-95 and for 45 minutes was stop and go a couple of feet at a time and 91 degrees.. I feared I would be running hot but it was without incident.

I have had the same experience with my 06 FPR 'R'. That said, I do have fears about the OEM fan failing sometime down the road. I'm still contemplating purchasing Mike's main fan and will likely do so sometime in the future.

I replaced the stock fan with Mike's, and adjusted fan settings with a Diablo Predator. Sitting in traffic no longer provokes a panic attack, and temps never get over a tick above 210 on the guage.

Mike's replacement fan is a must-have, and a beautiful piece of engineering all in itself. It is how Chevy should have done it.

When driving 35 MPH or less, turning on the AC forces the cooling fan on, setting it on recirculate forces it on high. Just know if you are in stop and go traffic, keep the AC on and it will stay around 210. There were failures in the original fans, Mike in AZ has a better after market replacement unit, if it doesn't cool down with the AC switched on.

I feel more comfortable having Mike's fan here in the house, than waiting for the mailman.

Overheating

Mike In AZ has both the replacement fan and an auxiliary fan. I have the auxiliary fan on mine and will probably replace the original fan with Mikes replacement fan at some point because of their high failure rate of the OEM fan.

Contact Mike he is your best source for help in making your cooling system something you do not have to worry about. He also has a front air dam that replaces the OEM that helps scoop more air in where it needs to go and it easily bolts into the original holes and is very affordable. Mike is a great guy and very helpful.

Hope this helps

2003-2005 will regulate at 195 on the gauge, if there is enough airflow. When you run short of airflow, the thermostat will be wide open and the temperature will rise until a fan comes on.

low speed on at 226, off at 219. High speed on at 235, shift to low at 226.

The computer controls the fans. There are no sensors or switches that you can change. The only change you can make ot the turn on temperature is to reprogram the computer.

Don't be nervous about the temperature swings. They are normal. If you want to reduce the swings, you can turn on the A/C. That will run the fan below 35mpoh and provide the needed cooling air flow.

As an alternative, you can also install an Auxiliary fan and let it take care of your problems. There are about 450 customers that will vouch for the Aux Fan and how it has stopped the worries.

Thumbs up Overheating

This is NOT an advertisement it `is a Testimonial. I got the fan from Simple Enginering and just got back from a 3 hour run at 8o+ and traffic in Houston. Never got over about 220 on the temp. guage. Someone else may have the same fan but I have gotten several things from them and am very happy with how everything was handeled by them.
