Performance Muffler

Has anyone just replaced the factory muffler only with a performance muffler (either Magnaflow or Corsa Touring)? I had a J. Formato tune over the past weekend and he said that replacing the stock muffler (leave the pipes) would make a noticable difference.

Is that possible and what part number works without the highway drone creeping in? A fellow Fanatic at the Panhandle Rally said go with an 18 inch Magnaflow, but didn't know the part number.

I installed the magnaflow dual in, dual out muffler with internal X pipe.
It has 3" connections all the way around. I have Kooks headers with 3" collectors running into the muffler. The output reduces from 3" to 2 1/2" at the outputs. The pipes are stock from out of the muffler to the tips.
There is a slight drone, but not at a common driving RPM.
I believe the Magnaflow part number is 12599.
Sounds nice, and it's not real loud.

I replaced the stock muffler with a Flowmaster Super 44 - P/N 8430452 (3" input - dual 2.5" output) and it definitely SOUNDS faster.

This Wednesday I'll be replacing just my muffler with a DYNOMAX VT. I have used Dynomax in the past and love the sound.

Slicks2003,

Sent you a PM. By the way, welcome to the forum. You might want to answer the PM here since that answer may be of interest to others.

What part or model # is an exact fit?

Jim,
Any muffler you use to replace the stock one should be a 3 inch inlet and two 2.5 outlets if you want to keep from using couplers. I think the stock one on my 05 was about 20 inches long and was a center inlet. There are two choices with Magnaflow, polished and satin finished external metal cases. I am sure many other manufacturers sell mufflers in similar sizes but the below may help you out with Magnaflow.

If you go here you will find all of the models Magnaflow sells: MagnaFlow Exhaust Products - For Trucks, Suv's, American Muscle, Diesel, & Sport Compact Vehicles

You probably want one of these single duals:
In/Out Length Overall Stainless Polished
3in./2.5in. 14in. 20in. 12198 14221
3in./2.5in. 18in. 24in. 12288 14288
3in./2.5in. 24in. 30in. 12388 N/A

The smaller the muffler the louder the exhaust.

Although we did not talk about exhausts at the Panhandle rally it was nice to meet you there.

Good luck in your quest

PS - I bought a Dynomax VT but I returned it. There is a spring loaded valve in the exit portion of the muffler that is supposed to open up at full throttle to make the muffler sound louder. I have read that there were issues with some vehicles where the valve gets noisy when it opens and closes rapidly at idle and makes a clanging sound. There were a few clips on Youtube I watched with the issue. I opened the box, looked at the spring loaded valve and decided to return it for a Magnaflow. I later read that Dynomax had added some extra gasket material to reduce the noise from the valve. I am VERY curious and would like to hear about the VT from actual owners though. I didn't have the guts to install it but would like to know how they sound and last after a few thousand miles. More info on them and part numbers here:
http://dynomax.com/mufflers.php?muffler=vt

Also, please be aware that the muffler that slicks2003 buys for his 2003 is not going to be the same one needed for your 05. The 03-04 is a single in single out 2.5 offset muffler, the 05-06 is a 3 inch center (?) inlet and 2.5 dual outlets.

I've just replaced my stock muffler with a magnaflow #12198. It is a 14" muffler all stainless with a lifetime warranty. It has a great sound at idle and cruising speed. But it does have a louder rumble at higher rpm's. You will hear a slight rummble in the cab at highway speeds, not like a header type drone. Very little if any notice in horse power gains.

I would have to agree. The Flowmaster Super 44 has received superb reviews. The Muffler just want you to cruise around without any annoying sounds.

Jim, don't forget that your ssr has two cats. If you want, you can do it the right way and go with "true duels". That's what I did by adding two flowmasters super 40 series mufflers with 3" pipes. Fits really good, and sounds great. Gives more hp also. Scuffy

Welcome to the Fanatics Mitch from WNC. When you get those true duals installed I sure would like to hear them in person. Sorry, I cannot recommend anyone to do the installation.

What part of WNC are you near?

Hi Jim
i have installed a Magnaflow complete muffler set cat back on my 06 automatic.
i did it by myself in 1 hour, the price of the comlete system was $ 600.-
including S+H.
is this a good price? The sound is great , loud if you rev ,quiet if you go 65 on the interstate, a very little drone from 55 up to 60 mls/h and over 80 mls/h

more info if you like

Not sure I ever answered, sorry. At the time I did not have this post marked to get any notices. So, the Dynomax VT that I installed to replace the stocker worked out perfect!

I also installed last weekend OBX St Stl headers and free flowing cats. It sounds unbelievable now!!!

Oh and NO flapper noise Dragon2U.

Magnaflo #12198

When you get ready to purchase be sure to check pricing at Performance Peddlers.com. I just bought a Magnaflo #12198 from them for $76.28 delivered.

What part of WNC are you near?

I am from Nebo, NC...almost in between Hickory and Asheville.

I just drove out west to get my new Toy this week!

I have only put hundred or so miles on her thus far, but I am HOOKED!

Been a long time since I have had something fun to drive!

I am trying to decide how serious I want to get about the hop-ups...
I used to have a 1980 4 spd dodge truck that i spent a lot of time and money on just to get to the mid 9's in an 1/8th...This truck feels faster already...but I am not sure yet. I am taking it to Shelby next week for a few tune and test runs.

Let me know how the tune goes. There is going to be a cool rally in Maggie Valley May 19, 2011. Check it out: Maggie Valley 2011, May 19-20-21

Did the same thing with mine. The Flowmaster 44 gives it a great sound. Cost about $125 installed
