Quiet gear.....

I'm ready to purchase a 4:56 gear for my SSR and since there is alot of talk on this site about installing a bad aftermarket gear that even if installed correctly will make noise from day one I'm concerned. Read all that I could find on it and have talked to some mechanics at the local shops, and it seems like it all boils down to the manufacturer of the gear set and process they use to mate the gears in the final machining. Some are supposed to use more steps in the final lapping of the gears.
Is the consensious out there to only use an O.E.M. gear if you want to get a good job, or have I been getting some bad info ? I only want to do this job once.

Bob

Expect some noise from new gears

Aloha Vettebob1,

There are a lot of very knowledgeable folks here - I'm NOT one of them - so I'm sure you can get some good information. All I can tell you is from my own experience, I have a set of Yukon 4.56 gears, which made some noticeable whine at first, just when letting off the gas, but after I think about 3 months the noise went away. No problems at all with the gears since.

Good luck and enjoy the kick you will get out of a 4.56 setup.

Mahalo,

AKWARES

I have the American axle 4:56 and I'm very pleased. Quiet from the start.

You would pretty much be winning a lottery if you were able to locate a set of OEM 4:56 American Axle gears for a 6 speed. I believe they are still available for the automatics.

Possibly someone on Fanatics has a set that they ran for a while and replaced with 4:10s once they supercharged their truck.

Genuine Gear makes them to OEM specs, I've had mine for two year and delighted.

big-daddy:

You have an 04. Different rear. As Flassh said, Bob, you'll be hard pressed to find an OEM 4:56 for the 05-06's.

I have Strange Engineering 4:56's in my 04. Quiet and quite nice.

http://www.strangeengineering.net/

Check them out and see if they can help, Bob~

I was ready to purchase Yukon 4.56's when the salesman talked me into the OEM for around $100 more.

Not a peep of noise.

Mine were from:

4:56 gears...

Thanks guys for all your suggestions and help. I did manage to find an O.E.M. gear. Called all around and found one vendor who had only one in stock in their Washington warehouse. Ran a little over $70.00 more than an aftermarket gear. I feel that it's well worth it from what I've read on this site.

Once again....Thanks !!!!!
