Soft handling replacement tires

I have a 05 ssr with nearly 38k miles. I've had a slow leak in one of the rear tires for quite some time and have finally decided to replace the rear tires. I have the original goodyear eagles on there now. I would like to change manufacturer or tire type because i've always felt that both the front and rear give a stiff ride. Does anyone have any suggestions for tires that have a smoother ride?

Thanks

LOTS of tire threads here...do a search.
I have Toyo Proxes all around on mine...much better handling than OEM.

BTW, welcome to the site!

tire sizes

Tires are like batteries, everyone seems to have their favorite.

I plan on replacing mine soon, and like the look and feel of a little more rubber between the rim and the road. The stock units ratios are 45F/40R. I think the General Grabbers have a comparable overall size, but in a 50F/45R ratio. Thats where I was going to start. Also do a search as one of the members created a chart showing different brands/sizes/overall dimensions.

Tire Ride

I replaced mine with Toyo Proxes ST and went up a size front and back in height
50s in the front and 45s in the back, rides better and fills the wheelwells in better looking lowered without lowering it.

General Grabber UHPs on my CajunMachine.....275/45-19s & 295/45-20s (Did the math & Revamped my sizes for better ride w/ plenty of clearance ) bought them from Sears of all places. They were a total of $540.oo before M/B, hard to beat that! Oh, and they ride way better and handle so much better.

I did see the thread that had all of the sizes and ratios, but none of that makes much sense to me. All i'm looking for is a better ride. One that is softer than the goodyear tires.

Thanks

Stay with OEM. Changed out my old OEMs for new and I could not believe how much better the ride. Old tires are well old and need to be replaced

The problem with replacing the old with new oem tires is that i never liked the goodyears even from the beginning. I purchased the ssr new. The front would shutter/vibrate after hitting a bump or uneven spot in the road. I did all of the things suggested like road force balance & adjusting tire pressure and I even installed the superior cross bar under the vehicle. That helped but it didn't relieve it completely. It has become better over the years as the tires have worn. I still have a slight shutter but not very noticeable. I do not want to go back to that poor performance. That is why i'm looking for some suggestions on tires that provide a softer ride than the original oem tires.

Thanks

Question Is a softer ride possible?

Hello, SSR fans - this is my first post...
I am thinking of buying one of these, so took my first test drive a couple of days ago, in an '05 with manual trans. The owner let me drive, and we took the car onto Calif Highway 15; in the Inland Empire. ( S. of LA and Inland).. There may have been some construction on the path that we took, but I felt the highway ripples so much, that it felt like a washboard road. I would almost describe the ride as "bone jarring." This kind of performance would be a tough sell to my other half...
I normally drive 2 different Jaguars, so I am used to IR suspension, and I am not used to the feel of a Corvette ( tight suspension.) The owner then proceded to show me how an SSR could navagate a 30 mph curvey road at 90 MPH! Pretty impressive! Pretty crazy, I almost had to cry UNCLE, but I was brave, and we managed to get back into our own lane when the oncoming truck appeared...!
So, I appreciate the posts about tires maybe having flat spots... but I really am wondering if a better ( softer) ride can be achieved - by either ditching the drive-flat tires or ??? My '74 El Camino was soo nice...

Do you know what tires were on the truck you tested. If they were runflats they were not original. The original tires were Goodyear RSA and I have never felt they were bone jarring. I find that my Firestone Firehawks are a bit stiffer than the OEMs but I have not had any complaints from my passengers. Unfortunately the Firehawks are no longer made in the SSR sizes. It may be the owner has changed the suspension as well. I think you need a bit more information before you start looking for tires. It is a fun ride and I am sure you will be able to find the help you need to make the ride the way you want it once you buy it. There are a lot of knowlegable members here to answer your questions and help spend your money

Welcome to the right place to get the answers to all your questions. Is the seller one of our members, or did you find the site on your own?

Tire pressure makes a huge difference, Jack.

I switched to General Grabbers about a year ago and originally the installer at Discount Tire put 35 lbs in them. After a couple weeks I had the pressure dropped down to 32 lbs and both the ride and handling improved considerably.

By the way . . . WELCOME from Southern Arizona.

Cool RE. softer ride

Thanks for the responses...

I believe that the tires were Goodyear RSA's the original type. He did mention that he kept the car in storage in his warehouse, so that got me thinkin' that there may have been some flat spots coming into play; at any rate, I'll try another one - hopefully Sunday afternoon!

Cheers!

I switched over to the Nitto INVO's a few months ago. Night and day over the stock Goodyears. The stock tires only had about 20K on them, and always had a slight vibration in the steering. The ride is so much smoother.

Tire pressure.

If you want optimum ride and performance, (not necessarily best tire or gas mileage) the sticker on the left door jamb below the door latch striker recommends 30 psi front and rear. Also if you run higher pressure in the rear, they will wear more in the center
