Speedo correction with 4:56 gears.....
Has anyone come up with a solution to correct the speedometer problems caused when changing to the 4:56 gears ? What exactly is keeping this from being done? Is it a programing parameter that can't be reached ? You'd think with all the brain power out there someone would stumble across it or be able to work around it.

The speedo can indeed be corrected for 4.56 gears whether you have an Automatic or a Manual Trans. Anyone with LS2 Edit should be able to do it. One recommendation is Bryan Herter at PCM4Less in Indiana, PA. (Overnight your ECM and TCM to him and he will take care of it) You can also send it to Wester''s Garage in Canada.
I can personally attest to the fact that Bryan Herter can set it properly with no problem.
If you want to do it yourself you could always spring for your own copy of the LS2 Edit software package.

I have an 04 with automatic transmission. The 4:56 gears were installed and I had to have the computer flashed to reset the speedometer. The tech that installed my magnacharger/headers, etc., did the computer change!

Is your speedometer now reading perfectly? I've read on this forum some guys have to deal with 6-8 mph off, and they say this is the best their computer techs could do .
My SSR: 05 6 sp. with 4.56 gears, ZR1 clutch, Edelbrock intake, Lunati cam, Crane rockers, C6 modified pan
The 03/04s are no problem, as even the micro tuners will handle the change. It's the 05/06s with the updated, CAN supported computers that have issues. Brian Herter at PCM 4 Less definitely has it figured out. He got my 05 dead on along with a good performance tune! I know others have issues with custom tuners not being able to correct their speedos, so not every tuner is created equal.
Zs, it looks like you have some good computer background and really understand what's needed. I, on the other hand have none and am at the mercy of the tuners out there. I know my Flashpaq, when in the data logging mode, would show the corrected mph on it's screen, but the R's speedo would not indicate the change. My limited understanding was that the changes needed were all obtained through the tire dia. files.

Making the speedometer change for 4.56 gears is no problem for about any micro-tuner on the 2003 and 2004 SSRs. It is 2005 and 2006 with the LS2 that is a challenge as mentioned by TopSpin.

My speedometer reads perfectly with 4.56 gears. I know of several others that also have theirs reading perfectly with 4.56 gears and they have either had Bryan Herter make the change with LS2 Edit or Lyndon Wester @ Westers Garage in Canada do it. Lyndon or Bryan can indeed set it correctly.
To Reiterate: Bryan Herter fixed my speedometer settings with 4.56 gears and it works perfectly. He uses LS2 Edit to make his changes. There are several other SSR Fanatic members on this site that have had the same success with Bryan Herter.

My speedo is dead nutz on! If the tech shop has the program there is no problem getting it right.
By the way, I am thinking of reverting to 4:11 gears in mine. Just almost too radical with the magnacharger and the 4:56 gears. Plus I have a terrible gear lash whine at 45-50 mph. I think the installer didn't tighten these up as much as he should have....

I can also vouch for Brian at PCM4less. I sent my ECM's to him on Tuesday and got them back today, about 48 hours including shipping! He corrected my speedo in my 05 auto to compensate for my new 4.56 gears and it is DEAD ON when compared with my GPS. I would highly recommend PCM4less to anyone!! The gear swap and tune including the speedo correction was pretty pricey, abt $1050.00, but WOW what a kick in the pants! The best money i've spent on my SSR so far.
