To weld or not to weld new exhaust system
ok, I just installed a Magnaflow cat back system. I have a lift in my garage so I installed it myself. Hardest part was removing stock exhaust. I installed the new system using the clamps. Doesnt really rattle, but the clamps and bolts produce a burning smell--it is very annoying with the top down. Has anyone else have this same problem, and did you just have it welded at the exhaust shop intead?

I'd be reluctant to weld most of it just in case you need to get access to something later on. Easier to un-clamp than cut and re-weld. Just my $0.02. I think the burning smell will go away after a few good heat cycles.

That "sweet" new smell went away for me after driving my SSR for few days. So you should be fine as well, and there is really no need to have the exhaust system all welded up, as my mufller shop did not do that to my system. The fit up was fine as is.
Of course, until the exhaust system smell goes away, to combat it, you could always eat more beans. The lesser of two evils, right?

Can you Smell It ???????????
I believe the smell is oil that is on the exhaust and muffler from the factory, not on the clamps so welding wouldn't help. It should go away after heat cycles or run time on the engine. Same thing happens when installing new Headers........THE FUNK HITS THE FAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! K
Don't weld......but do check periodically and re- tighten at 100 miles. They might move slightly and kiss the fascia...will burn & distort if the tips contact.
Good choice with the Magnaflows....they sound great.

Ask yourself this simple question, if it were a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, would you use clamps?
That annoying smell really belongs on something like a Nash Metropolitan.
Question is......if it were a Mustang or Jeep would you use clamps?
Clamps are called for. "I'd be reluctant to weld most of it just in case you need to get access to something later on. Easier to un-clamp than cut and re-weld. Just my $0.02. I think the burning smell will go away after a few good heat cycles."

I called my brother about his Mustang, asked if he used clamps on his GT's exhaust. He replied..."yeah,I use the clamps and I attached my subframe connectors with liquid nails too".Then he said I needed to go for my random D.O.T. drug screen this week.Guess I wont ask him any Mustang questions again.
My SSR: WE have an Aqua Blur 05 and a Redline Red 05
If you ever have to remove the tranny you first have to remove the Y pipe on a Magnaflow system. A welded exhaust will have to be cut. Also if you do weld it use stainless or the welds will rust. Mine are clamped with no problems.
