The summer testing of the Corvette Z-06 Main Cooling Fan on the SSR is now finished and this monster is a winner. Yes it's ugly, but it moves a LOT of air. It does not have the good looking full shroud or the finesse of the Flex-a-lite 180 Extreme, but what it lacks in looks, it makes up with brute force.
This fan is intended to go into the "problem" applications where engine modifications push the cooling system to its limits. Until now, the dual 11" Spal was the only option for those problem trucks.
Please understand that I am certainly NOT retiring the MFK-1 that is in so many (about 500) trucks. That fan is a fabulous piece of hardware and will continue to be my recommended replacement for the SSR OEM fan. In case you were wondering, I am still running the stock radiator and have put the Flex-a-lite back on my truck. The "used" prototype in the photo will be going on a daily driver here in Phoenix.
My Auxiliary Fan Kit is also still a very good tool to help keep the SSR cool. There are about 450 or 500 of them in service worldwide and they do a yoeman's job of keeping the temperature spikes and heat soak out of the SSR. They also do a great job of augmenting the A/C. I will continue to recommend that system as well.
The Corvette fan control system uses a PWM controller and is not compatible with the SSR system. I had to modify the wiring and add the low speed function into it in order to make this a true "plug-and-play" drop-in. Low speed operation is still very quiet.
I've kept this a pretty good secret. There are only a few people who knew this was brewing...... Thanks for keeping a lid on this guys. There are at least four manufacturers for this fan, but after looking them over, I was not satisfied with anything less than genuine GM parts. I have been working for a couple months to get local suppliers of parts necessary to make this happen. That is now complete as well.
I put my fan onto the Ron Davis radiator to show it off. You may notice that the fan in the photo is not spanking clean....... You guessed it....... this is the one that just finished the summer testing.
Like most of the products I've introduced, this one will be going out to a few SSRs for initial feedback. I have 4 local SSRs for test beds, now that the weather is getting good enough to drive the SSR in AZ. They will be getting their fans next week after I get back from SEMA. I expect to have this fan as a standard offering in my web store on November 19th. My target price point is $375. That price is driven by the price I pay to GM for the basic Z06 fan that is the core of this unit.
Warranty on all of my fans has never been an issue. This one is no different.
Sorry for the teaser, but I thought you all deserved to know what's new here. I really want your feedback......... and questions. The feedback and questions will help me be sure that I have not missed something.
Thanks for the support,
Mike

How about the instalation process? Will it take extra skill or is it pretty straight forward? Will anything get moved or tweeked to get it in and can you hear it from inside or outside the truck? Thanks.
This must be the new super fan you were testing about 2 months ago when I was over for another couple of SSR items. You mentioned that there were several manufacturers of this fan but that the AZ heat testing would decide which one to put your faith into.
Congrats on the new Simple Engineering product.

I'm giddy because with the new fan I may be able to drive Hellvis in Phoenix in the summer months in Phoenix, with average daily temps of 110 - 115 from late June through mid September.

If the intent is to supercharge, should I be ordering the MFK-1 from you, or go to this one.
I have no problem with it looking big and nasty.
Thanks Ray.
If you are just planning to do a supercharger on your six speed, you will do just fine with the MFK-1. I have been very successful with that fan on stock trucks with a S/C..... If, for some reason, you are not happy with the MFK-1, I'll make it right and send you the bigger fan.... Even if it is a year later.

Installation process is similar to the MFK-1. It's more difficult than the MFK-1 because the side brackets are a little bigger overall and you have a hard time getting it past the lower radiator hose on the passenger side. The MFK-1 has nice trim aluminum brackets and the Z06 fan has molded plastic ones. It's still all done from the top. The MFK-1 instructions will do OK for the Z-06 fan. The only difference is that the Z-06 fan has provision for the screws in the radiator of the late '05 and all '06 trucks that keep the fan down. These are not really needed, as the upper radiator support sits on top of the fan housing and won't let it come up and out of the mounts.
Yes, you can hear this fan from inside the truck when it goes to high speed. Even using the best fan, you can still hear it. Low speed operation is almost silent. You can't hear the low speed fan with the engine running.

I installed the first of the four "lead the fleet" fans on Smokey tonight. That rumpy-rump cam of his makes a LOT of heat in the heads (LOTS of cam overlap) and we're gonna see if this gets him some relief.
I have the second and third "lead the fleet" fans for you two guys and the fourth is for AZJowett. Let's get together at your convenience and get these rascals installed. Call me and we'll get 'er dun.

On the way home last nite from Mikes I could hear that big fan when I was setting at a stoplight but I did not have the radio on and my truck has 96 louvers in the hod so there is no hood pad. Temps did not change from the time smokey was started till we got in the barn. Mike gave it some serious wot throttle tests that we could hear from a mile away and the temps stayed in the normal range-- 190 t0 200 degrees . you can feel this fan pulling air from the front at idle. Hellvis needs this fan.

Your truck is a BLAST to drive. Thanks for lettimg me take it out for a few "full pull" demos for my passenger last night....... He was still mumbling about something for 5 minutes after you were gone. I couldn't quite make it out......... I think permagrin had him....
Regards buddy,
Mike

I will post some pictures tomorrow with the new front end and hood , it gets a lot of air out but also lets a lot of birt in I will clean it and take oictures .
Here are the pictures of the hood, and with the radio off I can hear Mikes new fan all the time. I did a lot of in traffic really slow driving and the temps did not raise at all.The temperature was only in the 90s yesterday but ten minutes in stop and go traffic used to get the temp gage to 235. Im running at 200 or just below now

Are there any comparison of the air flow between the two fans and the stocker?
