My cousin in San Antonio works for the Red Cross there and tells me it is hard to see people in dire straights, no money, out of gas, no food. Food stations and canteens are set up for the evacuees. Lots of family members got separated and are also afraid of gangs robbing them. Salvation Army has mobilized for feeding the hungry.

Best Wishes from the OTHER Hurricane State, Florida.
I wish there was just one OTHER Hurrican State. But Katrina made mush out of Mississippi and Louisiana. And this one (Ike) took another pretty good chunk out of Cameron, Louisiana - and there wasn't much left there after Rita. Sadly this is the plight of the whole Gulf Coast.
My R's not floating - you can tell Wildcat that the second floor of the garage WAS high enough.

Two stories about the Salvation Army
- My father was a career NYFD - tillerman - drove the back end of the old Hook and Ladder. Used to complain that the Red Cross would show up at a major fire and SELL hot coffee and doughnuts to the firemen. The Salvation Army would show up and give it away.
- I was a Peace Corps volunteer in India and the '60's saw first hand how all of the US church supported aid came with a heavy dose of proselytizing - even though that was illegal. And the aid was pretty substandard anyway. The USAID resources that we worked with were terribly administrated. Goods were just dumped in government warehouses and then the corruption started - I doubt if more than 20% got where it was supposed to go. The Salvation Army maintained accountability for every box of flour and helped the abject poor with more than just stuff - they did a large amount of training. And with absolutely no religious strings attached.
Ever since - I don't pass the guy with the bucket and the bell at Christmas without shelling out some cash.

Just posting to say that I and my SSR survived this beast of a storm. It was scary enough riding this thing out, but it really makes you appreciate electricity and clean water. The power is back on now and life is better today than the past 72 hours. Hope all other Fanatics in the affected area came through without great loss.

We are finally getting everything back on. We had lost power for 6 days but had no cable or internet for 10 days. All things are working as of 30 minutes ago. No major damage to us, but it is very bad around the Galveston
Bay area and Galveston Island. We are very thankful to have no major problems at our home. I pray for all of the people who lost so much. It is very heart breaking.
Thanks for everyone's concern for all of us on the Gulf coast.
