Retiring to Texas?

Hello to all you Texas Fanatic's!
Question? I'm looking to retire in Texas in around 30 months when I complete my 30 years of service, which will be the spring of '09.
I'm looking to move on or around a lake in Texas. Any suggestions as to where? My wife and I are going to vacation done there over the next couple of years to try and locate as to where we may like. Coming down this fall for a two week stay and again next spring and fall. I have fished quite a few lakes in the Texas areas over the past years myself and we don't want to end up just fishing all the time. Our SSR would get bored!!
Thanks.

Talking Check out North Texas?

Your SSR may like the new Motorsports or you may like Speedway or Stores?

I'm told there are more lakes in Texas than there are in Minnesota - anywhere in Hill Country and you should be a happy fisherman. Don't forget you can come down to the coast and get in some ocean angling, too.

I found a good website with clickable maps showing the lakes in Texas:

http://texassportfishing.com/ClickMaps.htm

That looks like it could be helpful. I was surprised to see the amount of water at Austin.

I live just west of Austin on lake Travis in the Texas hill country. About halfway between Austin & Marle Falls. In the area we have some really fantastic lakes & even better golf courses. We are just west of the perdenales river(which is dry due to drought) & have been here for 7 years. We love it. Come on down & I will be happy to show you around. GIG'emSSR.

Texas Retirement

Don't overlook East Texas, particularly Lake Fork and its big bass You're definitely in the country, but close enough to Dallas so you can enjoy the art museum, symphony, major league sports, etc., when you want to take a little ride in your SSR.

What Lakes????

Are you aware there is only ONE natural lake in the entire state of Texas? All the rest are reservoirs.( dammed up rivers ) Minnesota has 10,000 lakes. If the drought continues, we may be the Texas desert.
I live in Dallas, but my vote goes for Austin for scenic beauty, and all the other reasons for a nice place to retire....

My first choice would be the hill country - It's beautiful and lots of fun roads for the

But east Texas isn't bad either, but then there's west texas - oh what am I thinking?? Any where in Texas, isn't bad! I moved here as soon as I could !

We have been plotting to move to the Texas Hill country for a number of years now. We stayed at Marble Falls when Rita was heading for Galveston. We really like the area. We also like Fredericksburg. The Texas Hill Country is a beautiful place to live or visit. With the continued threats of Hurricanes, maybe one day we will sell our home and move from the Gulf Coast area to the Hill Country.

Rumor has it that while Nelson is in Fredricksburg they are going to be looking for a new house. Something big enough for SSR guests to come and go. course that is just what I heard.

You should come down in Oct., and bring the SSR and the missus. you could go to Frediricksburg wth us, and see some of the hill country then.

Locate somewhere in Texas you might like, then check the pinmap for any local (loco) fanatics, then invite yourself down for a personal tour of the area. Who else would you trust?
Just an idea.

A different perspective :-)

NEW TEXAN'S DIARY

May 30th:
Just moved to Dallas, Texas.
Now this is a city that knows how to live!!
Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. What a place!
I watched the sunset from a park lying on a blanket.
It was beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here.

June 14th:
Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an
air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure
to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshiper.

June 30th:
Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus
and rocks. What a breeze to maintain.
No more mowing the lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here.

July 10th:
The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used
to this kind of heat? At least it's kind of windy though. But getting used to
the heat and humidity is taking longer that I expected.

July 15th:
Fell asleep by the pool. (Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body).
Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though.
Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.

July 20th:
I missed Morgan (our cat) sneaking into the car when I left this
morning. By the time I got to the hot car for lunch, Morgan had died
and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag and stank up the $2,000 leather
upholstery. I told the kids that she ran away. The car now smells like
Kibbles and ****s. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat.

July 25th:
The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's
hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is not working and the AC repairman
charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts.

July 30th:
Been sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights now. $1,500 in damn
house payments and we can't even go inside. Why did I ever come here?

Aug. 4th:
It's 115 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost
$500 and gets the temperature down to 85, but this freaking humidity
makes the house feel like it's about 95. Stupid repairman. I hate this stupid city.

Aug. 8th:
If another wise ass asks, "Hot enough for you today?" I'm going to
strangle him. Damn heat. By the time I get to work the radiator is boiling
over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!!

Aug. 9th:
Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and sat on the black
leather seats in the ol' car. I thought my ass was on fire. I lost 2 layers
of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and ass. Now my car smells
like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat.

Aug. 10th:
The weather report might as well be a damn recording. Hot and sunny.
Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do **** for 2 damn
months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week.
Doesn't it ever rain in this damn desert? Water rationing now, so my
$1700 worth of cactus just dried up and blew into the damn pool.
Even the cactus can't live in this damn heat.

Aug. 14th:
Welcome to HELL!!! Temperature got to 115 today. Forgot to crack the
window and blew the damn windshield out of the car. The installer came
to fix it and said, "Hot enough for you today?" My wife had to spend the
$1500 house payment to bail me out of jail.

Freaking Texas. What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here...

Texas...

Sounds like you've had a blast scine you moved to Texas! (blast of hot air) Not much difference from Illinois, humidity about the same if not a little higher, temp's have be running in the 90's. Heat don't bother us, we've rahter have the heat with the mild off seasons rather than the cold winters where there is nothing to do a all except sit around waiting for nice weather again. Rahter put up with the warmer temp's than freezing cold!

San Antonio is the best

we have a river that runs thru the city.....very nice
gateway to everywhere close to the coast ....far from the northern border(yankee land)
4 military bases 2 huge military hosp....BAMC and Wilford hall
and a big PX at Fort Sam Houston....
The weather is always hot no rain , so you can run the SSR top down....
The Spurs 3 time NBA Champs
No rush hour traffic snarls like in Austin ...
Plenty of Mexican food rest.
Plenty of taco places
The Alamo and downtown San Antonio.....you can laugh at all the tourists....
Fish???? We have a HEB store on every corner to get fish at....
really 2.5 hours to the coast a real nice drive on IH37
also far from Houston......
We had a few lakes around....Canyon ...Medina, Choke Mc Queeny
and rivers...Guadalupe..San Antonio....
The San Antonio river is great for fishing.....You hear on the news ,that they are always fishing some body out of there...and I do mean bodies dead ones

Kay & I grew up in the Calumet Region of NW Indiana! I remember walking to school and those Headaches from the freezing wind on my face (always wore a heavy cap!)! In Texas it can be too hot to touch the steering wheel, but at least the battery can crank the engine OK! I could never understand how ANYBODY could ever enjoy swimming in Lake Michigan (seems freezing even in July!)?
OK, so you will likely want to put some ice cubes in your outdoor swimming pool during the HOT Summer, but we prefer Hot to Cold, too! We have to admit that the ice storms that sometimes occur are worse than we ever had up North (also, most drivers around here have no clue how to drive on snow or ice - they go either too slow or too fast! Also, do NOT expect to see detour signs (the highway department cannot be bothered and you are on your own when roadwork is underway!)

Thanks....

Thanks to all of your sugesstions so far. When my wife and I decide as to where we are going to visit down there, we'll post a tread and see who is out there in those areas. I had Vette's for years and the people were very nice we meet, I'm sure that all you Fanatic's are the same if not
