shifter/transmission issue

I just got home and when I shifted the transmission from drive to reverse. the shifter "free-wheeled" then locked back in neutral. Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like the shifter button stuck in the engaged position. Work it a few times to see if it is disengaging.

Just a question, but are you depressing the brake pedal when trying to engage the shifter button?

If you have, it sounds like you need to remove the shifter handle and determine why it won't depress.

Just tried depressing brake. No joy. How do you remove shifter cover?

Same thing happened to mine earlier this year. Would not come out of Park. The shifter cable had snapped. New cable installed by dealer under warranty but they had to tear out the whole center console to get it in. Hope that's not your trouble but you can see it from underneath.

Good luck.

Per The Library, I found this. Read it over and see it this is what you need to remove to access the cable.
Center console removal

Ok. My problem seems to be the eyelet at end of a cable linkage that snaps into a pin on shift lever (located on the transmission) has come off. I am going to try secure it in place with baling wire and/or Duct tape. If this works I will limb into the Chevy house in the morning.

Ok. An orange snap fit gormet at end of this cable linkage has crapped out and will no longer function. The eyelet at end of a cable linkage that snaps into a pin on lever (located on the driver's side of the transmission) is secure it in place with baling wire and/or Duct tape. SURPRISE baling wire & duct tape will fix the shifter enough to limp into the Chevy. Thanks Doug, SoonerRed, RunRodRun, and Byers for guidance. ITS ALIVE AND MOBILE.

I read a thread some time ago where someone came up with a better repair. You may want to post your thread in the "SSR Technical Discussion" and perhaps the person with a better repair will post the information. If you want I'll copy this post over to the tech section? Or PM Greg Ducato. He may have the parts you need for a DIY repair.

Got the SSR to Classic yesterday. Byers located the shifter cable and had the SSR back by 3:00. The eyelet gormet wore out, but the gormet is not available so you have to replace the entire cable by remove the waterfall and console. Extended warranty paid off. I think we need to design a quick gormet replace kit.

wonder if B&M has anything that works they are likely the biggest aftermarket for trannys out there (they build cookie cutter transmissions) would still love to have a phenoix one in mine should the need ever arise

Jinxed

I read this tread Saturday. I thought thank goodness I haven't had that problem.

Drove to work today. Parked on the 3rd level of the parking garage. Put the SSR in park, locked it. All OK so far.

I had to make a trip to another office. Go in the SSR turned on the key the indictor showed "2" The shift lever is in Park and the button won't depress. Jinxed.

The garage is too low for the wrecker. Luckily the R would roll and steer (very hard). We had to push it to the first ramp and it would roll almost to the next. Finally got it out of the garge and got it on the wrecker.

I am waiting to see if I have the same problem with the cable.

Skip, sounds like shifter cable. I had that problem last year, jury rigged it twice with a bushing from autozone but finnaly gave up and took it to Champion Chevrolet on Saturday and paid 300.00 parts and labor. This is a
very common problem on most of the GM trucks brcause of exhaust being so close to the cable.

UPDATE

The problem was the brake interlock solenoid.

I told the shop to replace the shifter cable at the same time. I asked the shop to give me the old parts. When the car was delivered the shop owner told me the mechanic had the solenoid installed and all back together before the shifter cable was delivered to the shop.

He told me if the cable broke he would install it for free.

The following Saturday I was backing out of a parking place, pulled it in drive. The shifter felt loose, I put it in drive 3, the shifter was now totally free. I headed home. Parked the R in front of my house away from the curb so a wrecker could come get. I put it in Park the indication showed 3 on the gauge cluster. After it was in Park I could not push the button and the R would not allow me to start it.

A wrecker picked it up on Monday the cable was installed. The shop did not charge me the labor to install the cable.

Did the cable replacement fix the problem?

Yes. Cable fixed the problem. I had an adjustment problem but that was taken care of also.
