Question TX License Plate Requirements

Hey, gang -

I had heard that Texas requires only rear license plates, and that the front one is "optional". Do any of you Lone Star Fanatics know if this is accurate?

Thanks.

Not optional; son got a warning for not having one on his HHR! Now Corvettes seem to get by a lot with none - it seems!

Yes, A front plate is currently required by state law.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...=1006040619507

It is being proposed to eliminate the front plate as a cost savings to the state but I don't know if it has passed yet.

I wish front plates had been eliminated so the dealer would not have drilled holes in my grille. The dealer would not allow us to mount bracket ourselves " due to Texas Law".

I would be willing to pay an extra ten bucks a year if they would let us keep off the front plates. Money is what makes lawmakers move on things. If you want a law changed, throw 'em some revenue, they love it.

It's worth it to me,
John

I've gotten a ticket for no front plate, but I still don't have it on the truck - I have 2 pieces of velcro attached to the inside of the front windshield and the opposite two on the top of the license plate - I put some foam on the bottom edge of the plate, so when I put it up in the front windshield it doesn't scratch the paint around the windshield

I know someone that drives a Camero and in May she was pulled over and given a ticket for no front license plate. She went before the judge to argue it and he told her it was a law and fined her $166. She immediately put it on. She drove with it in her car incase she was stopped but it do not matter here in our area.

Yeah - in the Houston area it's about a $200 pop. I haven't put one on in over 2 and a half years - haven't been stopped yet. But just been lucky.

Hello,
I didnt know but I was driving my SSR for a year with cancelled plates.... The inspection guy caught it. Seems the dealer put someone else plates on and somebody got mine. Its fixed now just cost me $6 Cause I showed them the bill of sale.

I went with the Custom Front Licence Plate Holder from http://www.bdspeedshop.com/ its really nice and you can remove it for shows.

Texas Front License Plates

It's the law in Texas to have front plates - I have not put one on the front of any of my cars for 40 years. I kept the front plate in the trunk or behind the front seat. I have been pulled over 5 or 6 times, but always tell the officer that the front end was wrecked and I am waiting on a license plate bracket. The plate is in the trunk. It is a good idea to scuff up the plate a little or put some bug crap on it so it looks like it was mounted on the front at one time or another. Soooooo far no tickets.
