Canadian R

My R originally came from Canada and has the metric spedometer. Can I change the faces with American ones? Will the gauges read correct or do I have to get an American gauge cluster to change the faces on?

I don't think the stepper motors care what they are pointing too.

Change to American Face Plate, have them point to the same location as your Canadian Face Plate.

Done.

For those of you that will be attending the 2011 International SSR Rally in September (with your truck), AC Rob has arranged to have the same technician that performed the stepper motor repairs at the AZ Tech Session to attend the Car Show.

If you need your stepper motors repaired, and /or face plates installed, we can do four or five at the show, first come, first served.

Please post your interest in the 2011 Rally Car Show thread.

That same technician did mine & he did good.
My guess is it took him 45 - 60 minutes to remove the cluster, replace all five stopper motors, replace cluster face, perform several test to make sure needles were pointing correctly & then put it all back together in the truck. All this without removing the entire front dash.

Looks very sharp!!! Wish there was a vendor that offered replacements for the gauge package cluster (volts, torque, and outside temp). That would complete the look.....

I agree, that would complete the looks big time.
Don't know if those gauges come apart easily ... if so, I'm thinking maybe if you took a high resolution picture of each individual gauge face and either:
1. With Photoshop, change to B& W, then do a negative effect.
or
2. Download the picture and take it to where they make vehicle signs or vehicle wraps. Bet they could do something … but I’m sure it would be pricy.

Just dreaming up ideas .....

Not a bad idea, I will see what Jeffantic can do and/or go to my FastSigns Dealer who does all our SSR Decals.

My name is not Dick ... but I’ll be happy to answer your question ….

On my SSR, I purchase aftermarket red needles which looks nice.

However …. What I watch I done was to paint the stock needles with a orange or red fluorescent paint.
Take a look at this picture, it belong to botkit.
Chevy SSR Photos | Chevrolet SSR Pictures - ssr_123
He did paint those needles & I don’t remember what kind of paint he used. Suggest you PM him.

My Name is Dick and I didn't change my needles or color them. Works fine for me.
They do have different color needles available from the same supplier of the Face Plate. Go on their Site and pick what you like.

I took this thread a step further and contacted Motor City Products about changing the gauges in the gauge package. Here is their response:

"Thanks for your interest. We are able to make those gauges. We haven’t made any yet. They are a sealed gauge pod and would need to be opened.
We would most likely need to install those gauge faces here. If we custom made some, it would take 4 weeks. Not sure on the cost. I would need to see how many different gauges there are on those models."

I will talk to them today and hopefully talk about price.

I changed mine to white cluster, did it myself. I ordered the white cluster face off Ebay. Roger Lewis, Sharptoys, will hook you up with the contact if you are interested.

I have two sets of upgraded stepper motors in stock (five per set) and I recommend that you change stepper motors when you change the face color. The OEM stepper motors are not very good and need to be changed. If you elect not to change them when you change your face color, you probably will a week or two later.

I noticed my speedometer was doing 120mph, in the garage with the door down. They changed my whole cluster 4 yrs ago. My stepper motors do NOT sweep like the OEM originals.

They have an upgrade stepper motor which is what I bought in case some one in our Florida Chapter wanted to change face plate, or has stepper motor problems.

If you want more information or help changing a face plate, contact me.

BTW, you can change the cluster without removing the entire dash front...did it in March at the tech session. FYI, for future reference.
Got issues with the gauges so I'm gonna have to replace the motors soon and would like to change out the gauge face when I do that....

Talking Sweet!~

Okay, I have the dash cluster out. I did not have to remove the entire dash, I only removed all the required screws to make it move easier. WOW what fun.... I heard from the grape vine that at night a light shows through and causes issues because it's too bright. Can anyone explain where that light is? I will attempt to put this back together before friday.

Thanks all!

See the three arrows on the left picture. If those plugs aren't put back in, then the light will shine though. Plugs on the right Cluster was color match with either paint or white tape.

When we changed the face to white at Sedona, noticed the 3 places were not opened up, so it was not necessary to put plugs in it. Apparently some of the newer ones are shipped without the holes being opened at the factory. I did ask for the plugs back to go with the stock face, which I did keep.

I used White Adhesive tape Jeff. Worked well and matched the cluster color.
