My son lives in Florida and I'm thinking about moving there. I know it's a transient state with a mixture of about every type human being you can imagine. I worry about the heat of the summer. My son is a work-out nut and claims he literally takes off four months a year because of it. Has anybody from this site come from the great White North (weather) and move down there? Can you share you personal experiences, both negative and positive. In a perfect world I would probably live in the mountains of North Carolina because the family has property there owned since before the Civil War, but I love and miss my son dearly. So.....help me in making my decision. Be brutally honest, if you may.

Snowbirds here!
We are from Michigan too. We asked the same question's you are asking a few years ago. One Florida Fanatic from the north told us, "make sure you can stand to be away from your grandkids for a extended period of time if you move down to FL."!
Your son on the other hand probably has his own friends to hang with. So now we just come down for 3 to 4 months during the Mich. winters.

I am from Massachusetts and I live between Daytona and Orlando I have been here 3 years. In that time I have never seen the temp reach 100 degrees. Now having said that, the sun is another matter, it is very hot, if you are in direct sun you bake, if you can find some shade there is always a breeze so you're OK. Between air conditioned cars houses and stores I don't have a problem and I'm glad I came. If you still have to work that might change things a little. But its 79 degrees here today (warm for this time of year) and that makes it worthwhile for me :0)

Been here for 25 years from Long Island, NY. Have no desire to deal with that white stuff that falls from the sky. I'm in Palm Coast (east coast just north of Daytona) and although it gets hot in the summer this time of year makes up for it. Was driving topless this morning.

I moved from Minnesota 26 years ago and I do not miss the deep freeze. Yea the summers are a little hot. Here in Miami is is in the mid 90's in the summer. It does get a little warmer the further you go inland. That is why we have A/C.
Beside you cant beat the winters here. As Jimmy Buffett says "It's a rag top day".

My Wife and I both went to school in Florida and then came back North. We are counting the days to move back.
Several years ago we were comparing the COL and what our dollar would by us for our retirement house and we found a gem of a house that was just short of going back to the bank. We made an offer, the seller took it and we all walked away happy.
As for the heat in the Summer, up North when it gets hot it stays hot at night. On the Gulf side or experiance has shown that in the evneing hours we almost always have a cool breeze coming in at night that helps with making the nights tollerable.
Just like any place you would live, you have to deal with what Mother Nature give you. Some folks have said we are stupid for planning on going to FL with the huricanes, but we have the tornados up here and lets face it, we have more advance notice of huricanes than we do of tornado warnings.
And remember white sand looks better than the white snow any day.
3 years, 11 months and counting down.
I like the seasons to change from the wonderful spring azalea and rhododendron to the fall color and the ever famous Carolina Blue Sky. Charlotte is 3 hours from snow skiing and 3 hours from the beach. No hurricanes, alligators or pythons; although we have coyotes now; I will stay here.

Hi,
Grew up in Chicago and have lived in Florida for many years. You do not have to live here all year around. We are in Lakeland, very close to Orlando, and indeed it is hot and humid in the summer.
We go north for the summer. We have friends who have a manufactured home in Petosky in a campground and love it. We have spent many a summer here in Florida and the cool summer nights in north country are a welcome change.
With that being said, it is close to 80 today, nice breeze, no AC on, went for a nice long walk. The net good outweighs the bad in our opinion, plus you are near your family.
One other possibility is not to go "back home" so to speak. We also have friends that drive halfway and spend the summer in the cool mountains of the Carolinas or Tennessee.
After two winters, I suspect, like most of us, you will wonder how you put up with winters as long as you did.
Do not move to FLORIDA!!It is a Hell Hole.
I've lived here for 64 years and I can't wait to get out.
75 degree winters, no snow to shovel, no earth quakes, (OK there is an occasional hurricane and mosquitoes the size of sparrows but you can't have everything)
You'll hate it here.

I have lived in Florida since 1958 - yes I came from the great white North - KY and VA not that real cooooold stuff, but I was young and didn't know any better.(Luv ice skating)
Now I couldn't live in the North -- Maybe the Southern West Coast, AZ, etc
If I did move - the only direction to move would be further South and I already live in Orlando - Luv my AC
I do like the idea of a month or so of vacation in the summer to Maggie Valley NC type of area but, not for 365 days a year
So with all that said SEE YA IN MARCH at the 4th Annual FL Rally in Daytona- for some of nice 72 degree Weather
I have lived here since 1958. My wife has been here since 1954. We both think that there is no greater place to live than here in Daytona Beach. The housing market is very reasonable right now and with the right agent you can find some really great deals on condos on the beach........If nothing else come down and try us out. The Gulf coast is where my daughter lived (now in Hawaii) right on Tampa Bay, beautiful condo 3/3 10 ft from the water. She was paying 1500 a month, for a furnished place, in a gated community. My other daughter lives in Lakewood Ranch (near Sarasota) she has a 32.5 condo on a golf course and she is paying 1800 for her's, also in a gated community. 300+ days a year with clear skies, plenty of sunshine. Lots of lakes and 2 oceans, rivers nad on and on. Born in Chicago, raised (until 13) in Wis. and do not miss anything above the Mason-Dixon line. The mountains in NC are beautiful,as is the landscapes in AL. or GA, but nothing beats FL. One can drive an hour and be at Disney, or Universal etc. I could go on and on. But I do think you need to travel down here and try us on for size...............docrod

Moved to the Redneck Riviera from upstate NY (Utica) in 1985. Came here for a 5 month AF contract. Never left. Retired in 2003. My sister (still in Utica) swears she'll move here "some" day. Told her to leave the shovel and snowblower there. Good Luck with the moving.

love it
Came here in 1977 from Pittsburgh still love the Steelers but do not miss the weather. When the air that god makes becomes unbearable I rely on the man made air.

Linda here. Moved down from NY in 1969. Can not even imagine shoveling snow or breathing cold air. In the summer if it is too hot for you, you do what people do in the winter up north. Stay in. Most times it is hotter up north than down here. Just have to stay out of the sun. The winter is the bonus in Florida. You cannot beat the blue skies, the wonderful breezes and the great weather, expecially when you read about all the cold and snow up north. JUST DO IT!!!
