Jeffantic Trailer Hitch addition

Jeff, and Dictator, here is the final on the hitch Jeff got for me. Of course being me it wasn't shiney enough. Nothing a little chrome wouldn't fix!
Thanks again Jeff, and also once they polished the OE hitch, the "ears fit over it. Actually there is about 1/16 gap now. So problem fixed.

Hitch

Thanks Bud,

But as you know that was all Jeff's design and it really works well.

Jeff and Tina are on a cruise, quess they want to get close to a Hurricane.

They will back, one way or another, next week.

I will be sure to tell him to check out the post.

Jeffanatic's got a "guy" in FLA. who fabricates the receiver portion. The stud is welded into the receiver.

I got a polishing / chrome "guy" in Hotlanta, put the two together, viola! Had them polish and chrome the OE hitch, being careful not to get the lock mechanism in the sulphuric acid or chrome tank. I had them stop about the curve to the pin. I had to grease the hell out of the ball bearings and the male pin after the chrome tank, but all works well. I really had not considered whether the acid or chrome environment would screw up the lock mechanism. Dumb luck, it didn't. Also, the step down on the OE hitch was bridged with a stack of hard rubber washers, which levels out the new receiver.
Cost.... all in, WITHOUT the OE hitch and ball, $300.00. A bit steep, but hey... its chrome!

Ump... I'll post pic off the truck, here, later tomorrow. Check back.
HERE THEY ARE!

God I love Chrome! So does the local Harley dealer (for my 03 Anniversary Gold Key Heritage), and my Chrome guy! NOTHING better than black with chrome!

Bud, I don't want to sound stupid, but probably do. So what does this do for you, elevate the hitch a few inches and move the trailer or whatever your towing farther back away from the rear of your truck? Thanks!

It Does elevate the hitch, but honestly, I am putting a drop receiver on. The BIG deal is that it pushes the trailer farther back away from the truck, which is too close with the OE hitch. Also, it allows you to use anything that will fit into a class 2 receiver. Like a bike carrier, a stowage rack for traveling, a spare like I have seen (was it Tony aka Golfer2 who had this at Maggie?I remember it WAS a yeller truck) that is attached to a fabricated "continental" kit, etc. MANY more options this way.

Jeff is on a cruise right now, according to Dicktator (Dick Belleville) he is the guy or I can work with him on a package.. I can hook you up if you want it chromed.

Nice work. i did this in 2005 for the main reason to use my FIRST spare kit, that is until I got bernie's kit to mount underneath.

BUT, I could never find anyone to chrome it as they didn't want to screw up the locking mechanism...great job on accomplishing that!!!

I still carry the spare tire carrier when I travel to give me a place to mount an OEM flat in case my bed is full of luggage, which it usually is

Anyway, great job.

EXACTLY... OP!
And Shadow man, it is an illness! I caught the contageon with my Harley, where HD stands for Hundred Dollars. It is in the final stages now with the "R"!

UMP,
See post 7 for the requested pics off the truck.

Bought a 4" drop extention (is that what the thingie that goes in the receiver is called? ... keep it clean! :-} ) today, which should level out most trailers, and overcome the raised receiver.
It was polished Stainless, so sort of "chromie" too.

Hitch

A customized trailer hitch is only the begining...the way to Permagrin land is by obtaining all the cool items we come up with or find on ebay and many Fanatics provide...etc. Some interesting means and methods to enjoy this ride so many ways to "put your touch on it"....

OP,

I LIKE your continental kit! I'm wanting to do something like that for my '03 Slingshot before we head for the Texas rally next June. Did you look into mounting a Trailblazer Reese hitch? That is what I'm thinking of doing. Also, why did you mount the tire so far from the receiver? Does it flex enough that you were concerned about contacting the tailgate?

Yea, I've got it bad. I have had the Shadow for about a month and I have purchased: Personalized waterfall badge (#16,398), brushed aluminum door sill covers, SSR emblems for the visors, tow hitch, bed bar and net, top tool. I'm still shopping, but now we're getting into the big dollar items, like painting and engine covers, hitches, etc....I NEED HELP!!!!!! Budhorse needs to block my access to pictures of his beautiful ride.....Does SSR stand for Serious S--- Required?

Box hitch looks great! Did he weld the mount bolt to the bottom box tube so the screw theads will mount and the bolt head won't obstruct the box tube tunnel???

classy addition!!

The tire kit I used had the holes placed near the end of the bar. although it keeps it far away, it does allow you to open the gate some.
If I had designed it, I would have placed the holes further in to get the tire closer to the truck. It is actually designed to be used with recessed receivers which ours is NOT.

OP,

Thanx for the quick reply. Would it be possible to cut the tube off some and drill a new hole or does it have a tapped hole like my bike rack has? What do you do with the flat? I assume it will not go onto the carrier or fit into the cover.
