Hi,
I would like to make a couple suggestions. I found a dealer in IL but had to be very aggressive in questioning them. They actually had the information in the computer. I asked them if they had a certified SSR mechanic on their staff. After getting a blank look from the manager, I explained they indeed do exist and had to take special classes.
He then responded that they have one mechanic that is a hair away from the top GM designation and I once again asked if he was a certified SSR mechanic. He then went and asked the guy and he said he took the classes, they then went into the computer and actually gave me the dates when the classes were taken. Bottom line is I ended up very pleased with the work.
Second suggestion (as I live in Lakeland, FL most of the year). While I try to have a good relationship with my local Chevy dealer, they do the hard stuff like filling the tires with nitrogen, replacing light bulbs, etc. I would call Lonnie at Sinister Kustoms (Plant City) before I would go to any local dealer. Between Lonnie and Dicktator, I suspect those of us in central Florida have as good a knowledge base as there is to be found. On the same plane would be Mike in AZ.
Reason I say that is this. There are many things like the ignition switch change out. Our guys can do it in a matter of no more than 5-10 minutes. From what I gather the Chevy manual turns it into a couple hour job where a good portion of the dash is removed or something like that.
I went to my local dealer in Lakeland to have them replace the light bulb in the top of the bed cover. Turned out there was no wiring harness so it was more than the bulb. The mechanic showed me the schematics and said Chevy did not have the part in stock and gave me the part number to order, if I could even find one.
I immediately called Lonnie and Dicktator....who put me in touch with a parts source. The parts source told me the dealer was wrong, that was only part of the harness and told me what I really needed, sold it and shipped it to me in 24 hours. I took the part over to the Chevy dealer, with the instructions and it turned out our guys were spot on; had I found the part the dealer wanted to order the problem would not have been solved.
If nothing else, I would strongly suggest if you are having a problem calling Lonnie and seeing what he has to say. If you then take it to a Chevy dealer you may find out how little they know.
regards,
