Real & Offical Keys Run 2009 Thread
Almost set... please refer to this post frequently for plans and changes. I also recommend you copy and paste this post sans guest list.
Traffic Alert:
There is construction on US#1 south just past Florida City where the turnpike ends. Once you pass the commercial area you may want to take Card Sound Road (left turn) to Key Largo and from there you will end up back on US #1. US #1 wasn't too terrible, but Card Sound is always easy (not to mention you go right past Alabama Jack's).
Provisions & stuff...
mm 103 is Publix (a grocery store)
mm 98.5 is the least expensive gas in the Keys, Sunoco
mm 86.5 is the giant lobster :: )
mm 84.5 is Holiday Isle & the world famous Tiki Bar mm 81.5 is Friday dinner @ Islamorada Fish Co. & World Wide Sportsman
mm 78 is Robbies if you want to feed a 200 lb tarpon by hand.... mm 62 is Conch Key Cottages where Saturday nights Pirates & Smugglers Dinner will be held
mm 59 is the Dolphin Research Center if you want to swim with the dolphins mm 52.5 is the Office Depot we will meet at at 11:00 Saturday am to caravan down to Key West ( just past Burger King)
mm 50 Grocery stores Publix & Winn Dixie, also Marathon Liquors
This week-end will be a bring your own... booze or soft drinks. Also I recommend that you bring chairs and coolers with ice if at all possible. If not, mooch off of someone..... just not me. : )
Parking at Conch Key Cottages for the dinner we be at a premium, fanatics that are staying on the island should pull all the way in towards the back, by the beach, as far as they can... please! I've hired some Georgia boys to be the bouncers/parking mafia... so do it right. lol!
Friday: I believe there are just too many fanatics to justify a planned cruise down into the Keys, so depending upon your arrival in South Florida please hook up in your own groups to head down to Conch Key/ Marathon where the hotels are located. Friday night dinner (if you chose) will be held at Islamorada Fish Company at 5:00 pm. This restaurant is at mm (mile marker) 81.5 connected to World Wide Sportsman (Bass Pro Shop for salt water fishermen). This is approximatley 20 miles north of the island, so you may just stop there on the way in if you time it well... I will be giving out 10% coupons for the restaurant and the store. These nice folks also donated a bunch of cool coolie's for our booty bag/survival kits. : )
After dinner you may enjoy one of many local bars between Islamorada and Marathon. The Tiki Bar at world famous Holiday Isle is right there on Islamorada at mm 84.. and is worth a stop to sight-see and have a frozen rumrunner. There is the Wreck Bar on Marathon too, which is a bit closer to our hotels... of course ya'll are welcome to come to Conch Key Cottages for a night cap too. Please BYOB.... and please don't drink and drive.
Saturday: Cruise to Key West for the Truck Show at Mallory Square, meeting at 11:00 am for a caravan down to Key West. We will all meet at Office Depot parking lot on the east (right if you're heading south) side of Overseas Hwy (aka US #1), at mm 52.5. I will provide maps of Key West with the route highlighted and will hand them out with the booty bags at Friday nights dinner at Islamorada Fish Company. If you are unable to attend the Friday dinner please come by the Conch Key Cottages and look for me to receive yours. It will hold all pertinent information for the week-end events.
You must enter the City of Key West property with the group and will be unable to leave once there... that is of course, until we leave as a group around 6:30. I am sorry that some of you wanted to go to Key West and be in the car show, and also attend Jeff & Tina's wedding, but I cannot allow you to leave the square until we are ready to leave as a group. If you would like to go to the wedding and enjoy Key West there is a public parking lot right next to the square. As a matter of fact there may be other SSR's that will have to park there due to the large amount of vehicles attending... (I never dreamed we would have this kind of turn-out!).
After the Mallory Square car show is finished at sunset for some...
and after Jeff & Tina's romantic island wedding for others...
We will all gather on Conch Key at the Conch Key Cottages (mm 62) for our Smugglers & Pirates dinner featuring Tim Dees playing cool island music, a major much-out and partying til the wee hours. Please refer to post #235 of this thread for complete dinner plans, forms and payments.... The dinner will be served from 8:00 to 9:30 and we have rented the entire island so the party may go on as long as we want.
Sunday: Depending on how late you can stay... maybe a short cruise to see Key deer or feed tarpon... or off to Bahia Honda State Park (one of the nation's Top 10 Beaches) for beautiful photo op's with your trucks or your bathing beauties... and for those heading home I suggest stopping at Alabama Jack's (it's on the way out) for lunch or dinner.
There is quite a contingency of people staying longer than the short week-end. Please feel free to stay as long as you'd like. There are tons of things to do and see in the Florida Keys. I will most likely stay until lunch on Monday myself, but others have plans to stay for 3 or 4 days longer.

Unreal... it's fully booked already at the Conch Key Cottages. Updates and back up plan can be found in post #1. Please don't let the short distance between these accommodations stop anyone from coming down and having a great time island style. We won't let anyone miss anything.

We're just disappointed that it's almost a year away. Well, at least we have something to look forward to, ugh besides the panhandle, Daytona, Maggie Valley, Texas, and any place else I forgot. Duh!!
