So who is leaving when? Do you all or some, want to hook up and cruise down to Islamorada or Marathon. We are flexable as when to leave and could meet in Florida City or even Palm Beach Gardens(that's where we are comming from).
I will be shining and detailing, hope it's not too hot, Sig 7 on Wednesday the 4th for the ride and will be ready to go Thursday or prefeably Friday for the festivities to start. Any one wanting to stay over in the gardens is welcome Thursday night if they need a rest stop. We have two extra bedrooms and are about 4 to 6 hours away.
If you have ever driven down to the keys ,you know it could be ssssllllloooowwww. But then you are on island time.

A bit over 3 weeks until the Keys Run and I thought I would start posting some stuff ya'll may like to know and do while visiting the Keys...
We'll start with Mile Markers (mm) and conch fritters.
Mile Markers are posted on little green signs all through the Keys on US#1 (or Overseas Hwy as it's called). They are used as addresses in the Keys.. US#1 starts at mm 0 in Key West and ends at mm 110 in Key Largo. Not too many places even yankees can get lost down there.
Conch fritters are a traditional food in the Caribbean. They are prepared by beating the crap outta some sea snails called conch, mixed into a batter with spices and veggies, and fried to golden perfection. Conch fritters and a cup of conch chowder is hard to beat, but not all conch fritters are created equal. Please make sure to stop at Alabama Jack's on your way in or out of the Keys. Instead of heading straight down US#1 out of Florida City you will follow Card Sound road south. Right before the toll and the big bridge is Alabama Jack's. Card Sound road will take you onto US#1 in Key Largo, so after you eat, just pay the toll and carry on south over the bridge.
Swimming in a rumrunner at the world famous Tiki Bar at Holiday Isle? The 16th Annual Corvettes in Paradise car show is there during the same week-end we'll be there. We should so go by there and gun our engines. I'm sorry I won't be able to do that with you though... I had a bit of a mishap last time.

Real Beer is available in Florida, its not Canadian
Some of the commercials lead people to drink some of the worthless tasting pantherpizz which amazes me... A real beer person In Florida would of course drink HURRICANE High Gravity in the 16oz can. I would like to tell you that when American brewer Anheuser-Busch got the new design recipes for brews from the new EUROPEAN owners - this is the one that was immediately popular here. I like the taste and its 8.1% alcohol is perfect. But they wont allow it to be brought to Canada. Too many problems with Canadian jealousy. I had to laugh when I saw Fosters is brewed in Toronto...lol...Remember where you heard it..Hurricane High Gravity -I will have a bunch of it for the Keys Run...Let me share one with you.!!

Beer goes with fishing!
Islamorada is the fishing capital of the world.. and Bud n Mary's is a great place to catch a ride out to the blue... or into the backcountry. Bud n Mary's has been a landmark for fishermen for 44 years. If you've never tasted snook you're missing out, it's the best eating fish ever (IMHO). You can't get them in a restaurant though, so you'll have to go get your own... Lucky for me my fishing-captain main-squeeze brings them home regularly.
On the subject of eating fish... if you want to eat fish in a resturant in the Keys, I recommend yellow tailed snapper or hog fish. I consider dolphin (aka Mahi Mahi) a poor substitute for the sweet taste of these snappers, better texture too. (I bet I catch some flack for this statement.)
And I refuse to even approach the subject of red snapper with this crowd!

If you'd like to take a nice ride one suggestion would be to go and see some Key Deer. They are a subspecies of the Virginia White-tailed deer but stand only a bit over 2 1/2 foot tall and range from 45-75 lbs. Head down to Big Pine Key and if you drive slowly through the neighborhoods or the Key Deer refuge you are likely to see one. The first time I did I thought it was a statuary in someone's yard. It's amazing how tiny they are.

The Blonde Giraffe has won awards for the Best Key Lime Pie... but most of us don't consider Key Lime pie as having a meringue on it. www.blondegiraffe.com
Plain with optional whipped cream is what most Floridians call "real" key lime pie.

More Key West Booty
Robert and I talked about visiting the here... never been, and I love the early history of the Keys. I also think there may be an "above" view of our trucks in Mallory Square from the top of this building...
