Howard Imes, BadBlackSSR approached me about a Cruise-in to the Vietnam War Memorial Wall which will be in Ft. Meade, Florida on Oct. 29th, 2011.
I immediately said "YES". I have Family on the Wall and would like to visit again.
Our New Ambassador, Alex Novakoski, Largossr05, has been working with Howard and will coordinate this Cruise-in. Please PM them with any questions or post on the Thread.

Florida Cruise – Lunch - “The Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall”
Saturday October 29th, 2011
Would you like to take a back road cruise with us to see “The Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall” cruising along some of the most scenic roads of Florida to get there? You may see alligators, drag lines and citrus groves along the way as the cruise takes us through the wonderful quaint towns of Mulberry, Wauchula, Lake Wales and Fort Meade. If you do, then cruise along in your “R” with Howard and Theresa (BadBlackSSR) and fellow SSR fanatics on Saturday October 29th, 2011 for one of best Florida back road cruises you’ll ever take!
Cruise begins promptly at 10 AM on Saturday October 29th, in the city of Mulberry Florida at McDonalds on Route 60, (GPS…205 East Canal Street, Mulberry Florida).
Leave Wauchula going South where we will stop for a 15 minute break at McDonalds (GPS…907 South 6th Avenue). Wauchula has many sets of railroad tracks, be sure to slow way down when crossing them…remember it’s a cruise, speed limits are strictly enforced by local officials!
Head north to Lake Wales, lunch around 12:30 or a bit later at the Crazy Fish Restaurant. CRAZY FISH BAR & GRILL - Home. (GPS… 802 Henry Street). Plan on lining up the “R’s” along the roadway on the grass in front of the restaurant, not in the unpaved parking lot to the east side of the restaurant. Lunch should take us (if past cruise lunch times are any indication) about and hour and a half.
Following lunch, cruise South to the city of Fort Meade where we’ll stop at the American Legion Post (GPS…825 North Charleston Avenue) to see “The Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall”, http://www.travelingwall.us/schedule of_appearances.htm. We plan this stop to be about a half hour so everyone has ample time to pay their respects.
Leave the American Legion and cruise back to Mulberry where we’ll disburse.
Cruise is about 115 miles of driving and we hope it will be top down weather. Actual driving time is around 3 hours. Add in time for stops and lunch and its close to 5 hours.
Please let us know if you plan on cruising that day and if you’ll be joining us for lunch. Howard needs to let the restaurant know about our fanatic group. Check out their menu in the link above.
PM Alex, LargoSSR05 who is working with Howard on making this cruise happen and will be tracking those cruising and having lunch.

Great idea for a cruise! I don't know if you've all seen it before, but if not, your 1/2 hour scheduled at the "wall" might not be near enough. It's an experience that can really grab you and require some recovery time. They usually have some interesting speakers present, too. Not a zip in zip out type of event!

Roger Lewis (Sharptoys) and Mike Fontana (Fontana) were kind enough to pass along in a email to me this information about the Vietnam Memorial Wall.
Interesting Veterans Statistics off the Vietnam Memorial Wall
"Carved on these walls is the story of America, of a continuing quest to preserve both Democracy and decency, and to protect a national treasure that we call the American dream." ~ President George Bush
SOMETHING to think about - Most of the surviving Parents are now deceased.
There are 58,267 names now listed on that polished black wall, including those added in 2010.
The names are arranged in the order in which they were taken from us by date and within each date the names are alphabetized. It is hard to believe it is 36 years since the last casualties.
Beginning at the apex on panel 1E and going out to the end of the East wall, appearing to recede into the earth (numbered 70E - May 25, 1968), then resuming at the end of the West wall, as the wall emerges from the earth (numbered 70W - continuing May 25, 1968) and ending with a date in 1975. Thus the war's beginning and end meet. The war is complete, coming full circle, yet broken by the earth that bounds the angle's open side and contained within the earth itself.
The first known casualty was Richard B. Fitzgibbon, of North Weymouth, Mass. Listed by the U.S. Department of Defense as having been killed on June 8, 1956. His name is listed on the Wall with that of his son, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Richard B. Fitzgibbon III, who was killed on Sept. 7, 1965.
· There are three sets of fathers and sons on the Wall.
· 39,996 on the Wall were just 22 or younger.
· The largest age group, 8,283 were just 19 years old;
33,103 were 18 years old.
· 12 soldiers on the Wall were 17 years old.
· 5 soldiers on the Wall were 16 years old.
· One soldier, PFC Dan Bullock was 15 years old.
· 997 soldiers were killed on their first day in Vietnam.
· 1,448 soldiers were killed on their last day in Vietnam.
· 31 sets of brothers are on the Wall.
· Thirty one sets of parents lost two of their sons.
· 54 soldiers on the wall attended Thomas Edison High School in Philadelphia. I wonder why so many from one school.
· 8 Women are on the Wall. Nursing the wounded.
· 244 soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War; 153 of them are on the Wall.
· Beallsville, Ohio with a population of 475 lost 6 of her sons.
· West Virginia had the highest casualty rate per capita in the nation. There are 711 West Virginians on the Wall.
· The Marines of Morenci - They led some of the scrappiest high school football and basketball teams that the little Arizona copper town of Morenci (pop. 5,058) had ever known and cheered. They enjoyed roaring beer busts. In quieter moments, they rode horses along the Coronado Trail, stalked deer in the Apache National Forest. And in the patriotic camaraderie typical of Morenci's mining families, the nine graduates of Morenci High enlisted as a group in the Marine Corps. Their service began on Independence Day, 1966. Only 3 returned home.
· The Buddies of Midvale - LeRoy Tafoya, Jimmy Martinez, Tom Gonzales were all boyhood friends and lived on three consecutive streets in Midvale, Utah on Fifth, Sixth and Seventh avenues. They lived only a few yards apart. They played ball at the adjacent sandlot ball field. And they all went to Vietnam. In a span of 16 dark days in late 1967, all three would be killed. LeRoy was killed on Wednesday, Nov. 22, the fourth anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Jimmy died less than 24 hours later on Thanksgiving Day. Tom was shot dead assaulting the enemy on Dec 7, Pearl Harbor Rembrance Day.
· The most casualty deaths for a single day was on January 31, 1968 ~ 245 deaths.
· The most casualty deaths for a single month was May 1968 - 2,415 casualties were incurred.
For most Americans who read this they will only see the numbers that the Vietnam War created. To those of us who survived the war, and to the families of those who did not, we see the faces, we feel the pain that these numbers created. We are, until we too pass away, haunted with these numbers, because they were our friends, fathers, husbands, wife's, sons and daughters. There are no noble wars, just noble warriors.
Please pass this on to those who served during this time, and to those who DO Care.
Thank you Mike/Roger.

Just in case you can't make the entire cruise with us, here's some information about our stop and start times if you want to join us along the way.
As the cruise starts at 10 in Mulberry and has stops along the route, if you'd like to join the cruise later that morning in Wauchula at the McDonalds we should be there around 10:40, departing by 11:00.
We'll then cruise onto our lunch destination in Lake Wales, the Crazy Fish Restaurant arriving at noon or soon thereafter. Join us for lunch. Should be done with lunch by 1:30 and then we'll then cruise to Fort Meade which should be about a 45 minute drive along the backroads. We'll stop as long as needed at the American Legion before heading back to Mulberry.

That's a nice dash plaque that Jeff designed!
Wish we could go, but that's not possible this time.
We did see the wall when it was in this area about
8 or 9 years ago and it was very sad & moving
to find my childhood friend's name on there.
