Heading to Marathon next weekend for a week of vacation. Will have 1/2 day both saturdays available in Miami area to visit as well. Was wondering what suggestions Fanatics might have for must sees when I'm there. Flying down, not driving so a rental not the SSR. First time to the Keys. Aside from Key West and Key Largo, glass bottom boats, etc, any other suggestions? What about things in Miama/Fort Lauderdale area on Saturdays ( 14th and 21st). Thanks for any ideas you all may have.

Jim;
To bad you are not driving down! You could stop off at the Maggie Valley Rally on May 19-22!! Have you read the information post on the MV Rally??
The Jungle Queen is a good time to be had. When the wife and I did it, we got mooned by some kids. It was truly funny. Had a great BBQ meal. However this was back in 2001 when I was working on my Doctorate. There is really a lot to do in that area. Whatever you do enjoy. Have a safe and memorable trip..............docrod

Hi,
Been to the keys many, many times. Used to own a condo in Marathon.
Key West, take the Conch train tour. A must you will learn a good bit about the island.
If you like to snorkel, just south of Marathon is Looe Key. Go to a dive boats place and they rent snorkeling equipment and what they call snorkeling vests which hold you on top of the water. Just be sure to wear a tee shirt or something over your bathing suit because it is so beautiful you will lose track of time and end up with a God-awful sunburn.
If you want a nice restaurant, well off the beaten path, there was one called The Castaways in Maration off 15th street I believe. It is literally right next to the dock where the fishing boats unload their catch and you can watch if a boat comes in. They have honeybuns that will melt in your mouth to say the least. It used to be an adventure driving through the trailers where those who work on the fishing boats live but don't give up, when you get there it is worth it. It used to be 2-3 blocks of pot holes and then you came on to this hole in the wall restaurant that was worth the effort. My son and family went there a year or so ago and he phoned me from there. Now he is almost 50 years old and we took him there when he was a kid. He was all excited because his kids were going nuts with the honeybuns just like he did when he was there age.
In Key West there was also a canoe tour which was the better part of a day. They take you into the backwater bay and it is a real neat trip.
And finally, be sure to watch the sun go down one night at the docks in Key West. It is normally quite an experience and cast of characters as well.
Enjoy,
FloRidah
PS: Don't get confused with the fish names. The best fish down there is dolphin but it is a fish, not to be confused with Flipper. Some folks call it Mahi-Mahi but in that part of the country it is dolphin. When it is in the water it is a beautiful fish with a silver, green and blue color and very light and good eating.

If you are driving down to the keys, I recommend you take Card Sound Road instead of US 1 to Key Largo from Florida City (left turn after about 1 mile from Turnpike) and stop at Alabama Jacks for lunch.
In Miami theres Vizcaya Museum and Gardens just souht of downtown. Bill Baggs State Park at then end of Key Biscayne, and Seaquarium on Virgina Key, Both are on Rickenbacker Cswy.
You could always take a drive on A1A in South Beach and see the wild life.
There is plenty to do here in So Florida and the Keys.

I am going to send you a p.m. with my phone numbers... you will be in my backyard as I am right between Miami and the Keys. Maybe we could hook up for some lunch or an airboat ride! Alabama Jack's is 20 minutes from my house... when I'm driving my SSR, a bit longer if I drive the Avalanche.
Give me a call and I can help you find something you would enjoy to do down here... we pretty much have something for everybody, tourism is our life here in Florida.

You are between Long Key State park an Bahia Honda State park. Both are very nice. Also lazy Days at the Marathon marina has good food. 7 mile grill in Marathon also good.
