Where did the unwritten rule that Fanatics do not bid against other Fanatics come from, and how long has it been out there?
By definition, an auction means people bid against each other. If an item is desirable, it should sell for the highest possible price. Auctions would not exist without competition. Barrett Jackson wouldn’t exist if bidders backed off because someone else bid first. I’m sure the two bidders who took the Supersnake to 5 million at BJ in January wished the “I was there first” rule had been in place for that auction.
If we continue on this course of not bidding against other Fanatics, I see the following happening.
1 – Suppliers who see that we deliberately stifle bidding competition will be discouraged from creating or supplying quality items for or related to SSRs. We will see less sellers willing to risk getting a poor return on their investment.
For example, I have asked a few suppliers of SSR models on EBay if they would consider creating models in various Pace Car configurations. We have a better chance of seeing those in the future if bidding on SSR items is strong.
2 – Fundraisers become impossible. There is no point is making an item available for auction if it is going to sell to the first bidder, rather than the highest bidder. Any item up for auction should go to the person who is prepared to offer the highest price for it.
I see no reason why I should not bid on an item if I really want it, even if another Fanatic has already placed a bid. We all have different approaches to auctions. Some like to bid early and bid often. Others prefer to wait until the last minute before making a bid. I’m not a fan of electronic snipes. I prefer to hang in till the last second on EBay auctions, and throw out one last “winner take all” bid. If someone out there was prepared to pay more than I was, he or she has earned the item.
I think a better rule would be that bidders are not to reveal their identities during an auction. That would eliminate any concerns about bidding against friends.
It’s important for all Fanatics to express their opinion so we can have a better understanding of where we all stand on this issue. I’m doing this as a poll to give Fanatics an opportunity to give their opinion anonymously.
If any of you want to post an opinion, pro or con, please do so. Dialogue is the best way to make all sides known.
This poll is set to run for 7 days.

I have no problem with a fanatic bidding against me or bidding against a fanatic. We are a relatively small group of enthusiasts all looking for items related to our SSr's. It is inevitable that we will cross paths in our search for products related to our special interest. I have even been relieved when someone else won a bid on an item. When I bid, I place a bid amount equal to what I would be willing to pay for an item. If the bidding moves beyond that financial point I'm out, more power to the winner and congratulations

If memory serves me correctly....there was a post a long time ago where fanatics were posting their e-bay names so others would know that was them bidding on items and to back down.
Yep, I'm a sniper, too. I wait until there's about 2 seconds left and hit the button on my high speed connection.
If someone else has bid higher earlier on they'd win, but... I've never lost an auction using my technique. I bid a high amount at the end. I bid the maximum that I am willing to spend. No special software needed... just a watch. =)
I have SSR items on ebay right now and I have no idea if a fanatic is bidding on them or not.
Can you tell me how you know that Fanatics are bidding against Fanatics?
Delma Lou
Primarily an EBay concern, but it could apply to any circumstances where an item is available to Fanatics.
It's a bit more anonymous on EBay now, because they no longer list the bidder's name, or allow you to check the bidder's other recent purchases to get an idea of his or her interests.
There have been situations in the past where someone would post an item for sale on Fanatics, or put a link to an item that was available on EBay or elsewhere. Someone else would then post a note saying they were interested in, or bidding on an item, and to please respect the Fanatic rule regarding bidding.
I ran into a similar situation when I purchased Signature 12. The Fanatic who had posted that it was available on the site was not very happy with me purchasing it, even though he had not secured it before posting it on the site. Circumstances were a bit more complex, but the thinking was similar.
I felt the poll was important to get a feel for how the overall SSR community felt about it.
So far, the results are quite one sided.

The last second sniping is a rush.
Had one set of circumstances where a Greenlight 03 Signature pace truck was up for auction. I really wanted it, and the other bidder's recent history was that he was buying up anything related to the Indy 500. I thought I was nuts putting in the bid I did on it. Had it with 15 seconds to go, then lost it.
Lost to a better sniper, and sent him a note congratulating him. I suspect his snipe was electronic, or he had placed a pretty heavy bid on it earlier. He couldn't have reacted that quickly in real time.

What was the point in posting that kind of information.

On a different auction topic, how did you feel the bidding went on the signed Pace prints at Woodward? Did they sell for what you had hoped?

I agree!!
I NEVER thought the signed Pace poster would go for $610.00!
I WAY under estimated it's value so I stopped very early on when it was just Sandy and myself bidding. I too sent a congrats to Sandy cause she earned it!!!
Bidding= no harm, no foul as far as I am concerend
I got beat on the '05 Pace SSR Saturday night at BJ by $ 1000.....but that's as high as I would go. I hope to congratulate the new owner someday on this forum.

I don't agree! I thought the Poster should go much higher, as it is 1 of 1 plus having the signatures of the engineer's that were so an integral part of the development of the SSR. It was very fortunate getting them all together at the same time and they were all very gracious to sign it.
I don't know if Fanatics stayed off it because Sandy was so determined to get it I hope not because I still have a few of the Signed and numbered Posters left from the original 12 that I would like to have a silent auction on this site so a Fanatic member will have an opportunity to get one. However if people are going to not bid only because their friend or fellow Fanatic member was the first to bid or really wanted it I won't bother.
I think all things being equal and me being a big collector of antique advertising (I have a pretty good handle on what is collectable rare and unique) I truly believe Sandy got a great deal as did the 4 winners of the numbered posters at Woodward Dream Cruise.
What a lot of you don't know that Im sure will surprise you it cost almost $250.00 each to make the small number of posters like that and have them framed. That's not counting all the time I spent with phone calls follow ups making sure they would remain a rare collectable working with Howard on the design if you add my time that almost doubles the cost.
Sorry to ramble on here but I think you all need to know what a rare piece that was

Based on the first few hours response to the poll, I'd say Bring It On!!!!!i
And yes, I will be bidding if you decide to do a silent auction on Fanatics.

grimmye is my name and SSR's is my game! Now I use grimmye on a lot of different internet sites and including ebay, however, I got a PM from a member that was pi**ed because I won an SSR model that he wanted. This Fanatic accused me of trying to by ALL the SSR models on ebay and not letting other Fanatics have a chance. For your info this member has spent 15X as much as me buying up SSR models on ebay in the past year.

I understand where the idea came from - it even spawned a thread where we can post our Ebay names up.
I guess it's really up to the individual as to whether they feel he/she will bid against another member. However, when the auction is put up (and especially one aimed primarily at the SSR community), we can't expect that competitiveness between ourselves will NOT happen.
Since the first 2 of the prints were auctioned off at a Fanatic-only gathering, it was pretty much impossible to not bid against another member. To my knowledge, no hard feelings from anyone for being outbid, and I would hope that to be the situation in the vast majority of cases that come up. Except for a few very rare items out there one has to remember that another one just like it will be up for auction later.
One time there where two cargo covers on e-bay red and purple.
I posted that I was bidding on the purple one.
So if another fanatic wanted one he could bid on the other so we where not jacking the price up on each other. It made sence to me.
