Carpet tail mat, but no carpeted bed!

This is how my '04 came from the factory. Wonder why, and if they did this to lots of SSRs?

My '03 has carpet in the tailgate and vinyl bed liner.
I always wondered why the gate was carpeted when I've seen some without carpet.

Smile Tailgate Carpet

In July 2003 when I ordered my first SSR, I got it with the standard plastic Liner.
When the dealer received the confirmation there was a notice that due to problems with
the plastic tailgate piece, all SSRs will have the carpeted tailgate cover installed. The plastic tailgate
liner was installed on the 2004 SSRs, ordered with the plastic, later in the Model year.

The original plastic taigate piece did not fit correctly so we used carpet until the plastic was right.

Interesting facts. Both of my 2004's had the optional carpeted bed.
