The 8.5 inch minimum is also recommended for the OE Goodyears the factory uses - go figure..

Tire Widths for Stock Wheels

Bluish:

I'm NO expert, but from my extensive research when I was looking to buy my custom wheels and tires for my truck, for the relative size wheels that we are talking about it seems like as long as the tire width (mm/25.4 to convert to inches) was approximately no more than 2 inches wider than the wheel, then you should be alright. This means that the tire centered on the wheel would be 1" wider than the wheel on both sides. Again, just a rule of thumb.

With this having been said, I believe that the two Toyo tire sizes that you mentioned would in my opinion be too wide for the stock 8" wide front and 10" wide rear wheels. I would keep the maximum tire width for the 8" wheel to a P255 = 10.04". I would keep the maximum tire width for the 10" wheel to a P305 = 12".

Bottom line is that you don't want to risk potentially unseating the tire bead and rolling the tire right off of the wheel with too wide a tire, particularly under hard cornering. But then, not so much of a big deal if all you are going to do is go straight and fast.....a.k.a. drag racing.

As has been mentioned earlier in this thread, finding the right non-stock brand tires can pose an interesting challenge particularly for the stock SSR wheel sizes when you have to consider maximum tire widths, relatively equal sidewall heights between front and rear, and load ratings.

Discount tires has a 30 day exchange policy, if you don' t like them they will exchange them for something else that fits. If you think the 275/45/19, and 315/35/20 are too wide you can get the smaller version of the Toyo's

Also I forgot to add:
I had the best of the two original tires(front and rear) mounted onto the spare painted rims so that I will have spares incase the emergency comes up.

I think that if anyone out there needs a spare for a short amount of time, in a hurry.
I am sure we can send these overnight to just about anywhere!

That's a great offer! It would be nice to have a couple af sets like that staged around the US. If I'm ever stranded, you'll be getting a call (or at least a PM)..

Call me anytime Art I know others who have spares and when we drove to Ruidoso, we had one of each in two seperate trucks just to be on the safe side. I don't think I ever thanked them for taking up valuable trunk space for us!!!!!

Thanks

Just for the record, I have a spare of each size on rims for this part of the country. Just got my 19" back from "Hawaiian fun" as he borrowed it until another tire (I had that one too) could be obtained. Ray is GtoG now.

I believe there are a number of owners who have "spares" which would keep their fellow fanatics on the road until this tire crisis is over.

P/P

Peace

They were kind of high from the tire rack price. Without looking at my checkbook, I think they were about 900 from the dealer. I did not complain since I could not get them from tirerack or anyone here locally(nashville). The local goodyear distributor(warehouse)did not have them and could not seem to be able to find them. The local goodyear dealers (retail) stores called the warehouse and that was what they relayed to me. The dealer called GM, and the lady at GM located them and had them shipped to my local dealer. Hope this helps. Not cheap, but got the tires.

I've got spare 'loaners' in the Kingsburg/Fresno area - heck - if you find yourself on Hwy 1 near Big Sur - I'll run a 'spare' over there too!

Took a week to get them but my local Discount tire store got me two goodyears for the front today. I'm going to keep them until the originals are used up and then do a spare thing with one of the takeoffs. Seems to be a trend.

Thanks for the tip. We will have ours until they sell. Spread the word. We are very excited about going to Lexington NC tomorrow for the Barbecue Festival. There are supposed to be 150,000 people at the festival. We are displaying our SSR's, no competition but we will be meeting and talking to a lot of folks. We will spread the word of SSR FANATICS wildly tomorrow.

Thanks for your email.

Tire availability

I keep reading that the stock tires are unavailable but my distributor seems to have plenty. I am starting to think I should buy whatever he has (80+ of the front ones and 80+ of the back ones a month or so ago). I imagine UPS'ing them would be expensive. Do that many of you folks have a problem getting the tires needed or is this a relatively minor issue?

My take on the situation is the fronts are becoming harder to find. Since GY only made that size for the SSR they are not likely to make more to support a measly 24000 vehicles when they build tires by the millions. As we put more miles on the SSRs and wear out tres, this will become more of an issue. It does appear that there are a couple of choices that match really well to the stock sizes (Dunlop, Firestone, BFG KDW) and a couple of other choices that fit but are sived a bit different (Toyo and BFG KDW2).

Smile Factory wheels & tires sold

We finally sold them to a guy in the Netherlands. He has a national account with UPS and weekly shipments from Chicago to the Netherlands.

I've actually had two new tires ... one from a guy swerving into my lane & me hitting the curb to avoid him (nutter!) Took a day to get the rear passenger side tire... no biggie. The second one I got as a freebie. Went to pick up my SSR after some warranty work... & they had punctured the front driver's side by accident & they replaced it... no wait.
