RE: Polished engine cover insert
Here's another easy way to accessorize your engine compartment without spending a lot of money. I picked up a cover insert on eBay really cheap because it had a few scratches in the paint. Used paint stripper and removed the paint. Took about three applications to do this. Under the paint was a beautiful Aluminum finish so I put it on the buffing wheel, used some red rouge buffing compound and it came up looking like chrome. Now, 'ill get a few bottles of Testor's model paint and fill in the SSR logo in Silver and Red. Looks like a million bucks for only a few hours of work.

Your polished engine cover insert looks great! You might want to look into whether or not the small domed "SSR" letters are available. I was contemplating having my engine cover insert bright chrome plated. I was not aware that it was mad of aluminum, as I thought it was plastic. Does any one out there know if those letters are available as a separate item?
I love seeing people use their imagination and ingenuity in coming up with ideas like this. COOL!!!
I thought I would post some photos of a detailing touch that I added to my tail lights and 3rd brake light this weekend. I had been to a few Corvette club cruise-ins recently and I was wanting somehow to get a bright chrome trim piece for my 3rd brake light similar to what I had seen on several Corvettes. I was in Pep Boys auto parts store a few days ago and picked up a 20' roll of 1/8" wide bright chrome flexible exterior body side molding for about $15.00. This particular product is distributed by Cowles Products Company, New Haven CT 06511, part number is S37780.
I then went to work applying the trim to the periphery of the tail lights and the 3rd brake light. I am tickled at the results. I was at another Corvette cruise-in today, and my friends thought it looked totally stock, like it came that way from the factory. Plus, it's not a permanent mod., as it is easily peeled off, because it uses 3M adhesive tape. This is a real cheap way to add a little more bright chrome to the overall look.

RE: Engine cover insert
Thanks Alex,
I was surprised to find the Aluminum under the paint myself! I'd rather paint the lettering by hand in Enamel since they are actually embossed and stamped into the metal already. Thought it was just some cheap plastic but when I noticed it said (Made in Italy) on the bottom it just had to the real thing. Didn't know my truck was part Italian. "datsa some spicy meatball" LOL

POLISHED ALUMINUM....we're talking about engine jewelry. That insert looks great.
I thought I would expand a bit on fanatic "lloger's" post #148 in this thread on using the SSR valve stem caps for door lock knobs. Here's what I did. I bought a set of "Tuner" door lock knobs from Auto Zone made by Pilot Automotive (www.pilotautomotive.com), part #PM-381C. These are particularly interesting in that the tops of them are actually their same valve stem caps that they also sell, screwed on to the top on the door lock posts. I merely had to unscrew the existing caps and replace them with the "SSR" brass valve stem caps. These "Marque" valve stem caps are made by Camisasca Automotive, part # 7-VT12-6087. The finished and installed door locks stick up a bit, but not objectionably to me at least. Besides, I liked the idea that the caps just screwed on the posts for simplicity.
As mentioned before, these door locks now compliment the "SSR" valve stem caps very nicely!
The following photos show the Pilot Automotive door locks and packging, as well as the SSR valve stem caps and packaging, with them screwed on the posts.

RE: Another cheap Add-on - Hood Scoop under $100.00
Hello Fellow Fanatic's
Here's another cheap add-on that was under $100.00 to do. Picked up a Lund scoop from Summit-Racing on eBay. It reminded me of the hood scoop that I use to have on my 1967 GTO so I figured I'd give a try to see how it would look on my SSR. They ship it unpainted with a pair of plastic mesh inserts that you stick on where the scoops are located. Prepped, primed, sanded and painted it with Dupli-Color spray paint to match the Asphalt Black. I decided to not use the stick-on inserts the factory supplied and instead cut out openings with a Dremel and hot glued stainless mesh into place from the back to give it a little more realism.
I know it's non functional and not the real thing as some of the purists out there might think but for under $100.00 it was worth the time and effort since the end results are not that bad.
By the way this project took 3 days. One to prep, the second to allow the paint to harden and the third to rub the paint out, buff and polish and install on the hood.

Thanks a lot for keeping this thread active by adding some neat, interesting stuff to it. I realize that those who opt not to accessorize or customize their SSR's will not pay much attention to this thread. However, for those of you who are really caught up in this accessorizing and customizing thing, like myself, this thread will hopefully provide many of us with continuing ideas on things to consider and do to our trucks, if not now, maybe in the future.

Ecklers Corvette cattalogs have a lot of emblems, decals etc. that are useful and the scripts of 'chevrolet' in gold or chrome is found in their www.classicchevy.com (front clip area )- the crossed flags and the script 'fuel injection' is very attractive. Some Forum folks have added them to the engine cover and the SS emblems look great on the front fenders - the (Ecklers) Camero book has different sizes and colors of emblems and decals. Also Year one and Summitt have bling-bling items for fun and dysfuntional cravings.... Use the web site to get to the other links, chevy trucks etc..

I got my set of 5 billet engine fluid cap covers from "Dragon2U" this past Thursday and installed them Friday. Let me say that I was EXTREMELY pleased with the cap covers. I want to emphasize that these are covers, and not replacement caps. Nevertheless, they are thick, heavy duty and high polished very nicely to look like bright chrome. I used the 3M double-sided tape, that was mentioned in earlier posts in this thread, to secure them to the stock caps. These cap covers don't come all the way down on the sides, so that you can stll grab a hold of the stock cap for removal. As was said earlier, the only cap that will be modified permanently is the windshield washer reservoir cap.
One reminder, I covered the entire top surface of the stock caps with the tape and them carefully put them back on in their tighted, final positions. Then I pressed on the cap covers. Doing it this way you will make sure that you have the cap cover on in a straight position.
Thanks again, "Dragon2U", for supplying us with a great product for customizing the appearance of the engine compartment. I, and others, were having a tough time finding what we wanted for this application.
Have to say that I am very pleased with DakotaDocMartin's "SSR Letters" for the hood insulator. The finish is first quality and the letters fit perfectly. I also feel the price is reasonable for the product that you are receiving....$65
Along with getting my engine cover painted, the "letters" really make the engine compartment just jump out at you. Check them out.... Tom
Doc's set of letters do look great, particularly with the yellow "SS" letters to coordinate with your truck. How about adding another photo to you post showing the entire engine compartment so that we can see these letters along with the painted engine cover?

I may have to back out of the garage to get the right pic(it's raining here, but will try) also I will need someone to resize my pics, so I can post. I do not know how to resize photos......................................................Tom
Thanks for posting the extra photos. As far as resizing (downsizing) photos, I use MS-Paint to do that although I can also use MS-Photo Editor as well. "Fanatic "Focks" turned me on to doing it in Paint and it seems to come out better, clearer for me particularly in downsizing photos as small as those used for forum avatars.
BTW, that painted engine cover looks real good, but a bit "naked" without the engine cover insert, doesn't it? Sure could use one to complete the ensemble, as they say, IMHO.

I know what you mean Alex, just haven't had the chance to put it back on, because was thinking about doing something to it, but not sure what!!!
Also thanks for the info on resizing, even at my age, still learning...

hello Ron, doing good. The body shop cost was $100 to paint, but when I went to get it, there was some dust in the paint which they sanded out. There is still one section that is rough, you can't see it in the pics. But overall, it is an ok job.
The mistake I made was not telling the body shop that I wanted a "perfect job" and charge me for what the job entailed. I knew somebody that he knew and he cut me a break, but if I had to do over I would have specified to them the kind of job that I wanted.
Also GhostRider offers some nice covers on his site, not sure if he does 03's &
04's but the LS2 covers look perfect and his price reflects that.
As they say you get what you pay for......................
If I don't respond to anything else shortly, I am going OTR today, won't be home til Friday afternoon, as my route has changed, I now have weekends off again Later..............................................................Tom
