For SSR, the first Signature Series vehicle was built in late 2002, as a 2003 MY. Regulations do not allow manufacturer's to cross two January 1st's with the same model designator, and therefore we had to make a choice early in the program when the Signature Series idea was agreed to:

We chose #2, and allocated out product to our dealers accordingly. We felt this provided the best customer value by keeping the model runs the smallest possible. Total production of the 2003 MY run was 3,416.
Additional thoughts:
Each MY has specific part numbers assigned to them due to timing and potentially federal safety and emission regulations as well. Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards also play a roll in determining when a vehicle changes model years, as the weighted Model year average determines a manufacturers' performance.
Lastly, LCC has always comeback after the traditional two week shut down building the same model year as it had built prior to the shut down. This was always the plan, as SSR has many shared components as the TrailBlazer and we wanted to lag the model year conversion of that product line at all times.
Other vehicles do this as well. So the statement that model change always occurs after the two week shut down is not always accurate, and in today's environment of trying to balance overall corporate resources, less and less typical across the industry as well.

Pretty simple to answer. The SSR wasn't production ready so we delayed start of regular production in for 2003, decreased the number of units for that model year in and increased the forecast for the 2004 model year. So there is the 2003, 2004, 2005 (new engine) and 2006 model years and that equals 4.
There are differences in the electrical systems aka harness, product EWO and ECM between the 2003 and 2004. You can build a 2003 from Jan 1st 2003 to Dec 31st 2003 and you could have built a 2003 in 2002. ... we were to discontinue the SSR the end of 2006 model year unless there was a reason not to.
Remember the Craft Centre was to build 4 different halo niche vehicles some rear wheel and some front wheel and possibly an all wheel drive.
