Well, last night I finally got the hinge kit I hacked together to work properly, Got the doors to open and close with no sagging or movement. They work! Now the asthetics come in. Just got to fine tune, paint, and put the fenders back on, trouble free hopefully, and I think I will have the first one with lambo doors. Assuming no one else has finished theirs, or already has done it without anyone here mentioning so. I will try to get pics up for everyone to see soon, but I will be on vacation for a couple weeks til mid June, so it wont be til after then.

sorry i have been dragging this out, but this project takes time, and I really dont want to risk damaging the truck. Alas, while I was fine tuning the adjustment on the doors this morning, one of the hinges broke in the middle of the job. As much as I hate to say, it looks like the project will be scrapped til winter, when there is more time for me to attend to the issues with fitment and adjustments. Sorry to anyone who was looking forward to seeing these, maybe you can imagine the excitement and anticipation I had for finishing the doors, and we were very close to completion, but you cant make broken parts work sometimes, and we will begin again. Thanks for your patience, and hope to have this done by years end.

Well, the kit was not designed for the SSR, and the dealer website said the one I have is the best choice for modifying to fit. I have checked with many major door kit manufacturers, and dealers, and not one of them knows who might have a kit specific for the SSR, so the mods were necassary to accomodate this truck. That being said, I totally redesigned and chopped and rebuilt the kit to get as close as possible to fit the SSR. The indexing windows were no problem, but the fenders are very close to the inner section of the body, so the swivel outward is very restricted. In order to make this work, the original swing arm had to be removed, and a new one fabbed up in a shape that fits the area behind the fender. When I was trying to bend the 1/2 inch steel to the shape I needed, the whole hinge assembly kinda just exploded. I can repair it, but after over 50 man hours of redesigning, cutting, welding, and rebuilding, I decided to just put the project on hold til fall, when I wont want to drive it too much, and have more time to play with it. Dont be mistaken, the kit is a high quality kit made up of 1/2 inch hardened steel, but I used a 10 ton press to bend the metal, and applied just little too much pressure. If anyone has questions about the process, and wants more details, feel free to get in touch anytime. Hope to see one soon, if not, I will be back on the project this fall, and IT WILL be done by next summer. Thanks to everyone who hung on to see it. Sorry to disappoint. See you on the road.

You may want to reconsider bending the steel arm. Eceeding the yeild strength on the material tends to make it more brittle and susceptible to cracking. This is especially a problem if the material has been heat treated. Do you have any information as to what alloy steel and which heat treat process, if any, was used?
ah i see... ive never really delt with the universal kits because i didnt want to go thru the hassle... but would you happen to have any pics of the process or anything like that because ive been interested in getting a universal weld kit for my cobalt ss

If you go to verticaldoors.com, I think they make a kit specific to the cobalt.
ya that kit is awsome ive herd... only thing is the doors are only 45 degree and id prefer the 90 degree.. if i ever decide to do the vertical doors ill probably go with that kit anyway but id love the 90 degree

I have a door kit
Well it was a HUGE pain to install the door kit but I have had mine on for about a year now. I would not have done it and I dont recommend it knowing what I know now but I do love them. I dont think there is a kit made that will install on an SSR without major re-fabrication.

Well besides the door....I see that you have a little more than stock Liters and HP!!!
Are you doing anything june 24th Sunday 12 Pm?
Are you too far from Big Ed's Bbq, 2316 Route 130 North, Dayton Nj 08810?
If the answers are nothing and no, read this thread and meet some other SSR owners and let us check out your ride! Nj Ssr Meet For June
PS...if you'd like to share info on the changes that you've made to your truck, I'm sure that there are a lot of us here that would be interested....

- 44lb injectors, headers, 3" exhaust system, custom ram induction system, custom radiator, custom oil cooler system, performance transmission, corvette racing rear, heavy duty torque converter, performance springs, shocks, and brakes.
- Carbon fiber front winglets, lower front air dam, and rear wing and xpel clear coating in front.
- HRE 648 R 3 piece forged 20" wheels w/ Michelin Diamaris tires.
- Lambo doors
- Inside: audio/video system with custom housing of 11 speakers, in dash DVD screen 5.1 dolby surround sound system including components from Alpine, Zapco, DynAudio, Morel and JL Audio. Scanmaster onboard computer and built in radar - laser detectors which are needed.

I would like to see how you achieved fender clearance. I have had a little trouble in designing my kit so it easily clears the fenders, and it does not go up as far as I would like, like yours. If you have pics and some info, that would be awesome, I sent you an email with my other addresses if you want to correspond. Thanks, Max

I think Big Jim might have some pictures if WingedBeast doesn't (Jim might even have a video of them working).
But he modified the fender to be able to get that clearance......
I circled where the bump is, but it is really hard to see and there is an equal bump on the fender....
I'm sure others can give a better discription/picture.

It looks as if he moved the fenders outward to accomodate the opening of the doors out, to give more room for the doors to clear the hood. I didn't do that, although we did think of it. Wasn't sure I liked the look of the fender lining up with the hood like that, but it doesn't look bad on the Beast. It may be the only option when I start up on mine again. Summer in Alaska is the best time to drive, so no project work until winter...two months from now.

I had to adjust the doors and the fender. Some more photos attached. Hopefully the closeup will help. I can try to take a clearer closeup if you would like...
