For those of us who didn’t get to see it, that was a pretty neat ceremony they had for Mike at Shea.
Berra, Carter, Bench, Fisk. Lasorda and Pudge were all there and the older players looked pretty much the same except for Fisk, who now reminds me of Al Gore. Mike received all kinds of presents, including a Rolex watch, a 2004 Chevrolet SSR, a rather large bottle of wine (not Gallo’s Chianti Classico, for sure) , a glass plaque and an inscribed home plate.
Mike is a very humble and classy individual and it showed throughout the ceremony. Towards the end, when it came time for Mike to speak, he glanced at Pudge and said that “he was already looking forward to attending his (Pudge’s) ceremony when he breaks the home run record by a catcher”.
What a class act Mike Piazza is.
