Newbie Question on Buying

Hi, hopefully, I'm not leaking oil here by posting this in 'a wrong thread'. Just joined, so that's my excuse for now.

I'm in the market for my first SSR and see the engine choices of 5.3 or 6.0, depending on the year made.

Questions: any engine size better or worse; is there a big difference in MPG's (some times, it's very minor); and last personal preference between the two engine sizes.

thanks for your time and keep the rubber side down...

Right time, Right place.

The topic of engines has been discussed many times. Just happened to come up again a couple days ago on this thread.

Depressed market

Heading out for the evening, but I'll check for more threads later if someone else hasn't chimed in with some links.

Welcome to SSRFanatic.

You are definitely in the right place to get information.

Welcome from Oklahoma. I prefer the 6.0 with the 6 speed. Gas price could be an issue with some people (Premium in the 6.0 regular in the 5.3).

Really depends on what YOU prefer.

Good luck in your search for the Permagrin. I also recommend buying Jim G's ebook. Here's the link: Jim G's e-book "The SSR Experience"

Welcome from So Cal. Mine a 2004 with 5.3.
I'm happy with it and see no need for additional HP as traffic in So Cal is so bad that their no room to floor it.
Plus, it runs on reg gas and I'm sure you know the story of high gas prices.

I'm in Georgia, where prices are better than the national level. My MPG is a VW TDI, get 45 average. So, this being a third car for fun, I can go either way.

So, sounds like he 6.0 prefers the high octane stuff?... Already learning.

thanks a ton.

Talking Heightened experience - permagrin

Plenty of room to run here and I just had mine Street Tuned. The 06 also has added footroom for the clutch and footrest area. The 6speed and the all aluminum engine LS2 is a monster. I dont worry about the price of gas as this is my stress outlet. Nothing like rowing thru the gears at WOT.
Go for the gusto!

I have owned 4 different SSR's.
Two automatics and two 6 speeds but all with the 6.0 Liter.
I have driven the 5.3 Liter but don't plan on owning one. I am at the top of the SSR wish list.
There is about a 100 HP difference between the two engines and the SSR weight is just North of 4,700 Lbs.
Both engines will make the SSR get up and go. The 6.0 is just a little bit faster.
If you want REAL fast then it is going to cost you.
Contrary to what you might read on the forum the 6.0 runs just fine on regular.
The owners manual only states that you may notice a reduction in performance.
I use the middle grade gasoline (89 Octane) now however I used regular in the first two SSR's I owned without any prooblem.
The 6 speed gets better mileage. I would get 22 mpg on the highway.
Loud exhaust lowers the mileage on all SSR's.
It has something to do with the sound and your right foot.

Good luck with your search.

Jim's book is very good - written by a true Fanatic, with great info comparing engines, transmissions, etc.

This is also a must read - having a Fanatic offer one for sale makes searching for it much easier.

WELCOME, DRV4SHOW . . from Southern Arizona.

As for the "better" engine . . . although I own an '05 (or it owns me) with the 6.0, I have driven both models and, believe me, either one will "reward" you with as many speeding tickets you want and/or need.

Premium vs Regular Fuel . . . since day one, I have only used Shell V-Power Premium in The Doophus, however, being able to use regular fuel in a 5.3 engine would be an advantage if you plan on lots of driving.

GOOD LUCK . . . the perfect SSR is out there just waiting for a good home.
