Ordered my new tires today!

After weeks of emails and phone calls I finally have a set of tires headed to the house. I decided to go ahead and get the General Grabber UHPs. All of the local tire shops, including a General dealer, couldn't get the tires. A call directly to General says they are out of stock nationwide, with no plans to mold any more for at least a couple of months.

I tried one of our site sponsors, Discount Tire Direct who said 'no problem', until I made a phone call and insisted they check the availibility prior to placing the order. Out of stock. Sorry. And it was the same story at a couple of other on-line retailers too, who said okay, until I insisted they check.

I had just about given up when I found a printout on my desk from mid-week for Tire Rack. They wanted more for shipping ( Discount Tire Direct was free shipping ) but I figured one more call couldn't hurt. Like all the other websites I was on, it said they were 'in stock'. So I called and explained the situation to the guy on the phone. He said he had them. I said are you SURE? He replied, "YES, I have two fronts in CT, and two rears in OH".

These tires were in the Tire Rack warehouse, not the General warehouse. Looks like it may be tough getting tires for a while. There are a few other choices out there, but I didn't really want another set of Goodyears, and I never really cared for Firestones. I never had Toyos, but one of the tire shops said the two sets were of two different compounds, and the Falkens were two different tread patterns. Also one shop suggested the Yokohama Advan ST, which I had not heard of, is anybody running those?

Anyway I am looking forward to a bit more rubber between me and the road this summer with the Generals. Now I need to get around to replacing six and a half year old battery!

WAY TO GO, Jeff . . .

I've been very satisfied with the performance and appearance of the General UHPs for about a year now.

I Understand

I had a similar adventure, I spent the winter months studying which tires to buy and had it down to four brands. Couldn't find the Grabbers, said production would be sometime in May, but 6 - 8 weeks after that before they would be in stock (didn't try Tire Rack). I then tried the Michelin Latitude Tour, same exact story. I finally found Toyo Proxes ST IIs at Tire Barn. They had 2 fronts at the warehouse in Illinois and rears at the Texas warehouse. They were ordered on 3/19 and aren't here (at my local Tire Barn) yet, got my fingers crossed!

Sounds like one more reason to switch out the wheels to either 20" all around or 22 - 20's.

Exactly, he's recommending a tire based on very limited conditions.

I got the Grabbers in the recommended sizes from the Official SSR Tire Database.....255/50/19 and 295/45/20. I saw this setup in PA this past year and really liked having a little bit more rubber between the rim and the road. I was also told they are quite good in the wet. ( you know, that stuff you try to avoid, but always end up driving thru on the way to a cruise ) Tire Rack promised they would be here by mid week.

I called Tire Rack directly at 1-888-541-1777 because the website said IN STOCK, spoke to a sales rep ( I think his name was Hunter ) and he checked their warehouses while I was on the phone with him, to confirm. Give it a try, maybe there are a few more out there.

Good Luck!

I can't believe the difference between OEMs and the Generals. I get absolutely no hydroplaning on the highway, and almost no spin going around a reverse camber corner. It's almost too comfortable in the wet. The taller sidewalls make the ride noticeably better

I'm all for taller sidewalls, those low profiles won't take any abuse at all, and being an oldfart, I like the look of a heftier tire. I'd even like white lettered sidewalls, if I could get them.

Oh, and for the record, I like wet traction too.

The fronts arrived today as expected. You know of course You can't fit all four tires in the back and close the lid to drive to the tire store. Hmmmmmmm.

I too purchased Toyo Proxes SST II tires in the 255/50R/19 and 295/45R/20 sizes and have driven them for 3 weeks. I simply couldn't come up with the original tire sizes or they were about $450 or more per tire. I like the ride and wet traction but I'm not sure I really like the looks. Those bigger tires really fill the wheel wells with very little clearance in the front. I think the SSR looks more like a truck than a hot rod with the bigger tires. I had about 21,000 miles on the factory tires and as many other owners found, the inside fronts were worn down to the cord. I tried to get the front alignment changed to the recommended "new" specs and my local L S shop couldn't get much adjustment in the chamber so they are still near the original factory setting. My SSR is a 6 speed and it feels like the extra weight of the bigger tires (if they weigh more) take more throttle on regular acceleration in 1st. ie- it seems to bog down more than usual and I've decided to go with the 410 gears. I will say you won't turn the new tires over every time one rain drop hits the pavement with the SST II tires!

Rears only!

On my 03 I have 29 K miles on the original Goodyears. The back tires need replacing for sure, but the fronts still look great! Go figure.

Remember, Scott . . . the AGE of a tire can be as dangerous as the mileage.

When I replaced the OEMs a little over a year ago, they only had about 10K miles but were almost seven years old which was more than a year older than The Doophus.

I was aware of the tire dating, and a bit concerned since they are in short supply around the country. So I checked them when they came in, the fronts were made the 8th week of 2011, and the rears were made the 6th week of 2011.

Cool. Jeff Cape Cod Blur

Here's a link to the "wake up" video that prompted me to buy new tires for both The Doophus and Bummer in spite of only 10K miles on one and 20K on the other . . .
