OK, I'll admit that I'm not anal about keeping the "R" waxed and spit-shined. I do wash and wax it on a regular basis and have clay bared it a couple of times.
It's a black '05, is garaged on the weekend and it sits outside while I'm at work.
I noticed that the bed cover has started looking a little dull. (The rest of the truck still looks great) I put my glasses on this weekend and the clear coat on the bed cover is definitely going south. There are about 6 or 8 places where it has very tiny bubbles coming up. I thought they were tree sap or something but when I tried to scrape one off with my fingernail I realized the clear coat was coming off.
I know the bed cover is one big heat sink but didn't think it would kill the paint like it apparently has.
Anyone else have a similar problem?

When I was looking to buy another R I looked at a few black colored ones that had similar issues. Not sure if the sun beating on the black color accelerates the issue but I've not seen issues with other colors ..... yet. Let's hope this isn't going to be an epidemic.
Same thing happened to my '03 black SSR. Started off as just a dull patch and progressed to an eight inch oval spot where the clearcoat came off then the paint. Wonder if the bed cover is more vulnerable to the elements because of how flat and horizotal it is.
If I may? My rig is a '04 and a daily driver, and it's BLACK I have used them all, including Zaino (A waste of $$$ and time) I have found the products from "SO CAL JAX WAX" to be the BEST there is in the upkeep of my BLACK paint..... It looks better now then the day I bought when it was a "GEERAGE QUEEN" CHECK THIS OUT
You will not be unhappy with the results and ease of appling and removal of their wax products RON ! Their detail spray is vantastic and the "HAWAIIAN SHINE" is vantastic for touch up between waxes! I kid you not! Bill is a great guy and will guide you in the easy useage of the "JAX WAX" product line if you have any questions at all.
If your truck sits outside regularly, water spots can "bake" into the black paint.
If you're not into doing the work yourself, any good auto detailer can get the water spots out. This needs to be done, otherwise, when the surface is polished, you end up working the paint more than the calcified water spots, and the clear coat gets thin.
Worst case, you can get the deck lid recleared by a good body shop for around $ 250.00.

Unfortunately it's not water spots. It is the clear coat breaking down.(just on the deck lid)
I took it to two dealer body shops. The Chevy dealer said they would have to strip it. They won't paint over paint that's breaking down (makes sense) To paint the lid and the small lid that covers the top well (behind the top when it's up) They want $750.00.
The Buick/GMC dealer where my brother works as a Service Writer gave me the "family discount" and quoted $540.00.
Looks like I'm going to spend some $$$.

Yes, my 04 did the very same thing. Just had it recleared by Furykay's paint shop.
Excellant job and good people to do business with. To bad you are not in Texas.
I had the Earl of Sheib repaint and clearcoat the bed cover and flip up and the A pillars for under $300. Not the best results but it will hold for a while.
