JUNK TITLES
"CarFax" Description — A Junk Title is issued on a vehicle damaged to the extent that the cost of repairing the vehicle exceeds ~ 75% of its pre-damage value. This damage threshold may vary by State. The majority of States use this title to indicate that a vehicle is not road worthy and cannot be titled again. *Some States treat Junk titles the same as Salvage* .
In “most” cases JUNK Titles represent VIN's that are forever deleted from the sequential VIN Registry. However, there have been instances where some have been reported both as JUNK and SALVAGE Titles and have sold with legal SALVAGE TITLES. Unfortunately there is differing criteria between some States and varying reporting agencies determining the title status that make it impossible to be definitively certain the JUNK VIN will never re-emerge.
*JUNK Title Registrations are effective the 1st of the month.

SALVAGED TITLES
CarFax Description:
A Salvage Title is issued on a vehicle damaged to the extent that the cost of repairing the vehicle exceeds ~ 75% of its pre-damage value. This damage threshold may vary by State. Some States treat Junk titles the same as Salvage but the majority use this title to indicate that a vehicle is not road worthy and cannot be titled again in that State. The following eleven States also use Salvage titles to identify stolen vehicles - AZ, FL, GA, IL, MD, MN, NJ, NM, NY, OK and OR.
**Any units followed by "REBUILT" are Branded Title SSR's that are known to have been repaired to State regulations and were back in service.

REBUILT TITLE
CarFax Description:
A Rebuilt/Reconstructed vehicle is a salvage vehicle that has been repaired and restored to operation. These vehicles are often severely damaged before they are rebuilt and refurbished parts are typically used during reconstruction. In most States, an inspection of the vehicle is required before the vehicle is allowed to return to the road.
My Note: Most Rebuilt Titles are former Salvage Titles that have been repaired and pass inspections meeting the licensing State's regulations.
VIN - MA32986 is an example of 2 SSR's being used to create one new REBUILT TITLE.
1GCES14H95B116539 SALVAGED TITLE - (Body destroyed) The rolling frame was used.
1GCES14H26B122149 JUNK TITLE - (Frame cut up) The body was used and placed on the #16539 frame to create an SSR titled in MA under a new VIN. - MA32986
Both original VIN's removed from the SSR VIN sequence.

"NO CURRENT RECORD" VIN’s
These are not Branded Titles. There are quite a number listed in the Deceased Thread that state "No Current Record" meaning the Title is clean, yet many of these SSR's are an absolute mess.
In the following group I have only included examples that have been confirmed as having been "Parted". It is quite possible the rolling frames with power train have been sold separately. In that event the frame would retain the original VIN, so the VIN would remain in tact for another use even though the SSR is no longer.

Miscellaneous "CarFax" Descriptions Scrapped —
Vehicles that have been dismantled and/or crushed and should not return to the road.
Dismantled Title —
The vehicle sustained major damage to one or more major component parts and the cost of repairing the vehicle for safe operation exceeds its fair market value. **When a Dismantled title is issued, the vehicle may be used only for parts or scrap metal. It cannot be re-titled or returned to the road.
Lemon Law Vehicle —
A vehicle with major problems that has been repurchased by or had its price renegotiated with the manufacturer. The State marks its official records or issues a Title Brand for Lemon Law vehicles. Laws vary by State as to the specific requirements for a "lemon". Most manufacturers issue some buybacks that are not the result of Lemon Laws but rather a courtesy.
Manufacturer Buyback or Lemon —
A DMV or a state agency marks an official document or issues a Manufacturer Buyback/Lemon title when a vehicle has been repurchased by the manufacturer. Not all States issue manufacturer buyback titles and the specific requirements for a lemon law vehicle vary by state.
Total Loss Vehicle —
An insurance or fleet company declares a vehicle a total loss when a claim exceeds ~ 75% of its pre-damage value or if the vehicle is stolen and not recovered. This damage threshold varies by company. These companies typically take possession and obtain the title. **Not all total loss vehicles result in a DMV-reported branded title. This may occur when an insurance company's definition of a total loss is different than the state DMV's definition for a branded title or when the owner of the vehicle is a self-insured company, like a fleet or rental company
My Note: Salvage companies who do not exceed 5 units per year need not register the VIN's with the National Motor Vehicle Title Registry so small salvage companies who have had SSR's through their facility and do not register them make the extremely difficult task of tracking these even more difficult.
