Bruce, Thank you for the kind words but I hardly think of myself as anything approaching a "master" of anything. I do however believe that I have the ability to transform concept to reality in a small way.
Just a small update that has come up in the last couple weeks. We are happy with the drive height and the stance of the truck but it just doesn't have that "WOW" look that we are after when parked. So to take care of that we are gonna change the suspension a wee bit. We are gonna bag it! The system we plan to use will be an upgrade over the stock setup resulting in better handling as well as the ability to drop the the truck a couple inches at rest. (forget about driving the truck in the down position!) This will allow us to "present" in a fashion never before seen with an SSR.
Granted bags are not for everyone, but done in a tastefull fashion they can really set off the overall look of the truck.
The metal work is done as of today and everything is being media blasted and getting a coating of DP-90 prior to going to bodywork. I will be doing the body and paint prep myself on this project, so I have lots of sweaty days ahead. I don't mind tho, it means I get to sculpt the finished product, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Kind of A MY BABY thing.
I'll be sure to post any other new changes that may come up,...and I'm sure there will be a few.

The project is a long way beyond what is shown on the HRCS web site. I have had it completely assembled and outside to take a good look.
It is indeed all original '53 sheet metal with a number of one off parts made to allow mounting of the panels. If you guys have any questions concerning the build, I will stop by here and try to answer them.
I have no clue as to the mirror comment. No one has seen the truck with mirrors on other than myself and a handfull of other employees of the shop.
I appreciate your interest in this project and welcome comments about it. Be assured that we are building a really Bitchin' ride. Some things will remain a bit of a secret untill it is unveiled, so you guys can speculate as to what is happening underneath that wild looking skin.
Again thanks for the interest, and I'll check back soon.

Scott,
I know a bunch of SSR owners would love to come and take a look at the project. I live in San Diego and work in Poway. Any way we could take alook around?

I'm all for that as I'm dying to ditch work in this kind of weather.

Guys, a shop tour is not gonna be a problem, I just have to clear it with my Boss. We have a bunch of cool stuff going on. Some things mild, some things WILD!
Bummer part is that the SSR is currently in small pieces. Fenders, hood , grille etc. are in work off the truck. So what you would see is just a jumble of parts. Other than the new bedside skin, rear lower body panel and the mods to the doors, there is really nothing to see. The owner of the truck isn't even comming to see.
I see no reason why the tour can't happen after or late in the prep for paint stage while still together for the most part.
I expect to assemble the project at least three more times before it gets painted. At that point it will take another 6 weeks to assemble. We have a target of late oct for completion so there is plenty of time.
I encourage all of you to check out the HRCS website and look at the current projects page. Most of this stuff you will be seeing in magazines over the next year or so. A great deal of the completed projects you may have already seen, for instance the Mike Richards '32. (Another of my Babies) Please forgive the shameless plug
This will have to happen on a saturday unfortunatly, as during the week I have to umm, work.
Couple more things, The owner of the project wants to sell the chrome wheels that are being relpaced, anybody interested? I have no idea of the value, I know he said he paid a pile for the set on his '05 SSR.
Also, the manual release tool is missing for the top, (supposed to be in the glovebox,.. but ain't). So I can't open the top (no electrics yet), Anyone in the area willing to swing by and let me borrow the tool for 15 seconds? We could do it on a saturday! LOL! Hell, I'll buy lunch and show off the shop! If you can help, call me at 760-745-1170. Stupid tool is a one off and only available from the factory, kicker is I only need the damn thing once!
Wow, that was a lot of babbling, I'll check back soon.

Vettegirl, yes we are gonna chrome the grill. Well, just the front section of it. The rear will be body color. Very little else on the truck will be chrome, no add'l dodads and assorted crap.

I admire your metal work you are makeing a killer truck.
Triple R, I can't say when the next update will happen. The webmaster works his way through the projects and trys to not overload one project over another. We have so many things going on with so much interest from viewers that it is impossible to keep everthing up to date. I'm sure at this time there are several pages about to be put up as to when, I can't say. I will grind him a bit on it tho.
I do take photos myself of things that may be of interest to you folks. I suppose that I can post a few now and again just to wet your whistle. I just have figure out how. (I'm not the most computer litterate person!)
The air ride suspension is almost done. Ron has done a fabulous job and nothing will be visible from any angle. The man is a magician in installing things that are both seviceable as well as hidden. I can't wait to see it in operation!
I'm still hopeing that a local will come thru with the use of that manual release tool for the roof. 15 seconds tops, and I'll buy lunch! Fortunatly enough other stuff is goin on that is has not yet reached critical time. It is getting close tho. Call me cheap, but I don't wanna buy the stupid thing.
If some one will tell me how to upload photos here I will shoot off a couple that won't be on an update for awhile.

Since you are not a supporting member the only way to post pictures is to use a free picture hosting website and placing a link here OR email the pictures to someone (you can PM me for my email if you wish).
Free hosting websites are PhotoBucket.com, etc. A friend of mine created a simple to use one call DogDogMan which some people here use as well.
If you ever get them on your website you can place a link like this from your website too....

Scott, if you don't want to deal with photobucket or DogDogMan, just email me the pictures and I'll post them here for you.
I've PM you my email address.
Well guys, since the trucks tool was missing, we had the owner look in his other truck. Oddly enough, it was gone too. He bought that truck new, maybe the damn thing doesn't really come in the glove box with a new truck. Anybody who bought new trucks, please enlighten me.
The release tool saga continues,.....
We order two of these gizmos, one for each truck, and figure we are golden in a couple days. Well, they showed up yesterday....Two wonderfull torx headed gizmos. Too bad they were male, we need a female tool. Chevy says that's the only tool ever made and are baffled with what we have. "Never heard of it" is what they said. Sent me a picture showing what they provided and claim that they are all like this......Horsepucky!!
I best research the build date, maybe this is an early truck and the latch assembly was changed going into full production. Maybe you guys could help me out with this one.
Btw, a worm ate my computer last week. I'm still in recovery mode for stuff on it. It may be some time before I can come thru with photos. ....(I can hear you all yelling BULL****, the guys a fraud!!!) It's true, and I can prove it!
I just bought a new computer that is twice as powerfull, at half of the cost of the one it replaces!
Reality is, as soon as I can, I will show a couple shots. I have to be very carefull tho, as there is alot of talk about this project. I can't reveal too many details because there are a couple mags potentialy interested and I can't blow that deal. I hope you folks will understand. Hell, from a company standpoint, I probably shouldn't be here at all.

Do you still need a top tool?

Scott,
I have a top tool I would be willing to lend you till you get the electrics going again. I live in Encinitas and spend alot of time in Oceanside. If you PM me, we could set up a meet during the week and maybe even on Wednesday (tomorrow) if I hear soon enough. Let me know what you would like to do.

Scott,
I did this rendering in Photoshop to show a different and milder version of using a retro grill. However, mine will never be more than a digital rendering and yours is REAL! Can't wait to see the finished truck you are building!

He has the top tool....but he is saying that inside the header looks like a "male" which would need a "female" socket....which it sort of does look like to me in the picture. I have never tried the top tool.....so I don't know how it works.

PLACE THE TOP TOOL OVER THE SPOT. HIT IT VARY HARD IT WILL SNAP INTO PLACE. Then you can turn the tool

I recieved calls from a couple members this morning and was able to explain my dilema a little better. Granted the photos really don't show the issue, but it is obvious that I have a male end in the header. For some reason the female sleeve is missing from this latch assembly. I'm beggining to think that it is one of those things that got past QC at the factory. (It happens at times) Later this week when all the electronics are in place, I will disassemble this monster and photograph what I have. At that point I will contact Chevrolet, show them what I have and expect them to replace this faulty mechanism with a correct one. They have already replaced the fuel tank so they know there are issues with this truck. Thank God we didn't cut up a good one! At the least when we are finished with this unit, it should have all the bugs worked out. Btw, this is #689, so maybe being a fairly early build will explain some of the weirdness. I would like to hear from anyone who has an earlier version to see if they have had similar problems
Again, Thanks for the calls!! You guys are the best!!
Oh and umpire,..I could pound that thing thru the roof skin and it STILL would not fit.
I will send the photos showing what I have to a member to post on the board. At least then you guys will see first hand what I have been moaning about.
Good news is that once the electronics are complete, that means that the NASTY stroker motor is ready to come to life!... Don't ask, my lips are sealed!

I have had a few of them apart . I can come up and get it to fit.
You do have to be firm with it. Let me know. Or send me a PM.
I could take a long lunch tommarrow.

Umpire13 is correct. I just verified it on my '05. The male protrusion you see is the spring loaded splined shaft of the latch drive motor. You don't need to rotate that shaft, you need to rotate the latch mechanism that shaft is engaged in. First you put the round protrusion on the top latch tool into hole in the end of the splined shaft, push really hard and the shaft will pop inward. You may have to rotate the tool a bit to get it the rest of the way into latch mechanism splines, then rotate the tool to release the latch mechanism.
