Hell of it is, something along those lines would have been better, considering the period we were trying to re-create.
Love your taillamps!! Obviously you have a talented person doing your alterations. Are they Oldsmobile? Just guessing here, but they are way cool.
One question about the door handles tho, (They look great btw!)...Did you have any clearance issues to the glass?
Most times builders don't really discuss issues with owners unless it is a realy big deal and could get expensive, we just work around it. I have no idea if you are a builder/owner or a client so please don't take my comments as an offense.
Love your Truck!
Later, Scott
I am the builder/owner and thankyou for your comments. I really love what you have done ,I think you have put alot more work into this one than I did.
The taillights are '59 Caddys and I modified the door handle with a backing plate and a "L" bracket. Then I simply drilled a hole for the factory grommet and used the original pushrod. If you get a chance check out my website www.x-rodz.com and check out Sinister build.
I'm enjoying watching your build you are a very talented craftsman.
Thanks Lonnie
Topspin,
we have the "x" member below the engine already. maybe the original owner had it installed. Was it stock on the '03?
Seems like a waste of time given where it is located
we have the truck all together today, sheet metalwise, and it is the first time it has been seen with the top retracted. All i can say is ...Bitchin'! I can't wait to see the stance in the morning when we set up the bags in relation to the ground. At this point we have only established up and down, and ride height. It has not been seen in primer and all one color. Life is good!
Small update,
It's been in the bodyshop for a week and a half. Doors back are ready for final prime. Front section is a tad behind because I blew it! The upper section of the new cowl sides were laid out as mirror images. Well, somehow I managed to wiff one side by 1/8 inch at the top. It might rub, or it may not. I'm not willing to take the chance, so off it comes for some re-work prior to primer and blocking.
So much for my "Master rep", I don't mind tho, better find it now than after paint.
Should be all in final prime and asembled complete (bumpers, lights, handles, mirrors etc for one last check about mid next week. Then we blow it apart into tiny chunks and paint the thing. Then the real fun starts,..trying to assemble a one off truck with only one person who knows the seqence and a whole bunch of helpers. What little hair I have left is probably gonna end up on the floor!
Reality is that I have a great support staff on this project and it's gonna go off without a hitch! ( HEY, stop looking at my fingers!! They are NOT crossed!)
Hey Topspin,
Could you pm me an e-mail addy? I really need to know more about this radiator issue, or send me a link to mike in AZ about the fans. This is a potential problem that it would be nice to cure before it decides to haunt us,.. 6 months from now.
Thanks for your interest in this project, any help will be appreciated.

Scott, I pm'd my info to you. It's obvious you're going way out of your way to build your customer the perfect ride! So, I'll continue to throw ideas at you. If that car has an annoying tink noise when shifting into gear it's very common and a replacement driveshaft is the cure. Also, myself and many others, have changed the rear gears to 4.10 or 4.56 from the factory 3.73. The 29.3" dia. rear tires make the 3.73 unrealistic. Great for top speed but terrible for moving a 4800# vehicle. A hand-held tuner will correct the speedo. The 4.56 gears were the single best change I made to my R, though mine is a 6 sp. with two overdrives, 6th being .53. Your auto. is .70 in 4th.
Hey Folks,
sorry it's been so long since an update. The truck is tailpipes and tuning away from completion.
I have to admit, at the beggining of this build I had my doubts. It was a tough one to get a clear picture in my minds eye. That turned out to be a good thing as it allowed the build to flow. The end result is a truck that
changes the definition of "retro".
I have some photos that with permission from the boss I will send to Umpire to post.
Thanks go out to the ump for the help today. He came out on his lunch break to clear the fault codes from the computer. (Yes, He has seen the truck!)
If anyone is interested, the original chrome spoke wheels and the original long block are available
I formed a piece of 16 gauge to the contour of the door and created the pocket for the handle to bolt to. Then it was a simple matter of making an L pivot brkt to actuate the original latch. I was able to modify the rod to work with the new push/push set up at the handle end. Real simple is always the best option if possible, at least that is what I have found to be true.

The truck is done and boy it looks nice. Scott is a craftsman. I had it in the shop for a day fixing some electrical malfunctions. But when it was here a fanatic came by and shot over 70 pictures of it. I was waiting for the Hot Rod web site to be updated before I posted the Pic's. I will call and see if they will let me put them up on our site. This is one of a kind truck.

So what on earth could happen to the fanatic member if s/he posted the pictures first?
I say go ahead and post it.

It is a beautiful color isn't it?.. When I had emailed Scott about his wheels for sale and gave a high five for letting us follow his build, he sent me a teaser pic of the truck early this month....but.....asked me not to share it so I haven't. BUT..it was killing me not to share as that truck is gorgeous and one of a kind.
Is it going to be featured in Hot Rod?
