Seriously... I do have one question about the conversion that has me a bit confused. How do they switch the dash and guages from one side to the other like that? Do they have to make a new one, or do the guages and the air bag just swap sides readily?
JUST FOR YOU Had to have time to apply them.
The dash is done via computer program. They take a photo of the dash and then the program reverse images it and then it is made in fibreglass and then the vinyl (or whatever) is applied. You really can't tell - looks like factory. They did a great job. Did you notice out speedo is now in kilometres???? and has the MCI logo on it.

The guys reckon about 380 man hours to do the job. We were very lucky that as soon as the SSR arrived via ship in Melbourne, the guys at MCI had a cancellation and could do it straight away for us. Initially they said they wouldn't be able to start it until about February 2007 and we would have been waiting until about May to have it back home in Townsville.
So, Mark saw his first SSR end of April 2006 whilst in USA. Came home with a brochure. Started looking on the net. Bought it 6/6/06 from Sanderson Autos, Auburn, Indiana. They shipped to Los Angeles for us and it was loaded onto a ship August 4th. Arrived in Melbourne mid September. MCI started work on it then so it took approximately three months for their conversion.
All up we had been waiting six months. Definitely worth the wait.
P.S. I am the co-driver only (not yet though) The drivers seat NOW is the old passenger seat and therefore no up and down for height for me. But whilst I am a passenger I can sit as high as I like and have no problems with armrest (maybe I am still sitting too low). But you can't have the seat heights looking uneven - that makes it look untidy!!!

P.P.S. That Permagrin sure sets in fast, doesn't it????????
I am so happy for you two and thanks a million for the last few months as we followed your progress and the results are beautiful. You and Mark have been so much fun and such patience. It now time for your PERMAGRIN. Those pics were great!!!
Yep, you are right there, they are the Wet Okole seat covers. The leather is lovely but gets far too hot to sit on. The seat covers with the yellow centres just breaks up the darkness of the cabin (along with the two tone steeering wheel cover).

It looks great! How do you like the feel of the seat covers while sitting or driving? Do they move around or pull out of place while getting in or out? I am thinking of purchasing a set because it's so hot here year round.

Hey Vavoom, doing import a car from one continent to another is allready a big thing, but to convert a LH steering into a RH looks real unbelievable! Great pictures, specially from the nearly "naked" SSR. Congratulations & respect to your
courage!
Swissr
Photoshop is magnificent isn't it?
I know you used it to mirror those pictures from RH drive to LH drive.
Seriously, That is an awesome job. MCI knows their craft. I was involved in two conversions in my career and know what an overwhelming undertaking this can be. I tip my hat to the Gents at MCI for an awesome job.

Great job and Great pictures! I just showed your pictures to an engineer that use to work at the General Motors Craft Center where your SSR was built. He was truly impressed with th R.H. conversion. He said he can't wait to show them to some co-workers that use to work at the SSR plant.

Wow, if it wasn`t for the elevated terrain in the background I would think you`re in Palm Beach. Beautiful workmanship and scenery. It even brought back memories of my time spent in England, as a GI, and driving on the left. When I got back to the States, I nearly killed myself and my young bride in traffic. Thanks for sharing......Paul
The guys at MCI are true craftsman, and the truck is awesome. If we ever have a national SSR meet here in the U.S. you have to ship it back here so we can all admire the handywork. I will personally chip in to offset the shipping cost.

You did a great thing, how many Kilometers already?
When we picked up the car it had 2900kms (1800 miles) and now it has 6745kms.
Ran like a dream even though the weather was dreadful. Snow in Victoria at Christmas!!!! Rain in Sydney and Brisbane!! At least we got to test out the wipers!!! Definitely turning a few heads down here.

Mike,
Haven't driven a lot since we installed the seat covers but they seem to fit the seats really well and there doesn't seem to be any movement. Will definitely get the seat cover shampoo and protector as marks will show on the yellow centres. Apparently you just wash the seat covers while on the seats??? They seem comfortable as there is a layer of foam under the neoprene. The cut outs for the seat belt loop and airbags are very well done. You can also get a deodorizer for those that fish and hunt so the seat covers won't smell????
