I have looked at a number of threads on here about various owners inserting in dash NAV units in their SSR's. It seems like a lot of these threads are a few years old.
I would love to install one of those everything but the kitchen sink units into my 05 which currently has the factory Bose 6 CD changer in it.
I would like NAV, Ipod/Iphone connectivity, cd, dvd, bluetooth interface and a rear back up camera. I went on Crutchfield and saw only 3 systems come up as being installable in my vehicle. They are a Jensen VM9414, a Clarion NZ501, and a Kenwood KVT516. I would also like to retain usability of my steering wheel audio controls.
Under the installation details link I see this.
Installation Details for your 2005 Chevrolet SSR Pickup with Bose system
To install this item, you'll have to modify your vehicle.
You'll lose the factory warning chime if you replace the factory radio. We don't recommend replacing the factory radio.
Hmm that's odd. They dont recommend me replacing the factory radio?
Anyway, I was hoping somebody has done a radio swap to one of the newer units recently and could offer me some opinions/advice. I assume I have other choices beyond these three radios.
First of all, Crutchfield doesn’t seem to list all that available, why, I don’t know. I had a local Audio shop take care of all my needs.
I have Pioneer unit which I’m sure it now outdated & I don’t see why a newer Pioneer unit wouldn’t fit the SSR.
Your local audio shop will know which adapter you’ll need so that you can continue using the controls on the steering wheel.
It true that you’ll lose the factory warning chime … at lest in mine it is.
I can get you the phone # of the guy who did mine (& 5+ other SSR) here in CA if you want to call him and ask questions, I’m sure he can point you in the right direction..
Just installed a Kenwood unit 2 months ago. Once you get the factory radio removed it's kinda easy to install. I did my install in under 2 hours, but then I can tear the dash down in 5 minutes since I've done it a few times.
So lets say for the sake of arguement you choose to go with Kenwood. Kenwood uses Garmin for their navigation. Garmin is the best in my opinion. You have 3 current models to choose from that meet your requirements.

All I know is that neither Tim or I have taken the dash apart...whether the rocket scientist or someone else has is another story...I don't usually stick around to see them tear her apart

Not to the degree Tommy has done. I also installed essentially the same setup as Tommy is talking about. Steering wheel controls and door chimes work...
not that big of a deal. I replaced my unit with the Pioneer - while I didn't do the backup, it allows for that.
But I had the steering wheel control put in by the pro - took it down while the dash was still apart. They weren't happy that I had done the rest myself, but they said I did a good job, and they couldn't compete on price...
Thanks for all the feedback. I saw the one thread that outlined the dash cover removal step by step with pictures and it didn't look too bad at all. Of course I haven't tried it myself yet.
Thanks for the detailed parts/part number info, it gives me some firm info to run with.
Tommy which model is it that you installed in your R?

If you want to make the dash removal go much quicker, remove the airbags screws as per Mike in AZs recommendation. Did it and when I needed to make a small change I just removed the passenger airbag and went behind the radio.

I agree... I think if I wanted to do it again, I would remove the airbag screws. AND there is some available space behind the airbag for all the boxes.
So...Tommy...if I buy everything needed you can do this in two hours not including drive time.
Yes, only problem I wont be doing any installs untill my garage is freed up. Looks like a Mustang blew-up in my garage. Parts all over, it ain't pretty.
Maybe we can do something before Laughlin?

I installed a DDX318. I didn't want a radio with GPS. I currently have a 7 inch Garmin mounted to the dash of my worktruck. After hearing that thing barking at me all day I need the break. So the DDX318 plays my ipod and DVD's and thats all I ask. And it plays my DVD's while driving, no tickets yet.
