Post OnStar Expands Beyond GM Cars

OnStar today announced that it is responding to repeated consumer requests by offering its industry leading safety, security and connectivity services for non-GM and older GM vehicles already on the road. A standalone rearview mirror packing all of OnStar’s core technology will be available this spring through consumer electronics retailers, and is compatible with most top-selling vehicles from major manufacturers.

”For years, thousands of drivers have asked us to get OnStar in vehicles that didn’t feature it as standard,” said Chris Preuss, OnStar president. “With the retail product that we’ve introduced today they certainly can. This move in to the consumer electronics space represents the biggest development in our business model since introducing OnStar as standard across all GM products several years ago. It represents a quantum leap forward in our plans to grow our business and provide a strong new revenue base for GM and OnStar from which we can further develop our core offerings in the factory-equipped market.”

OnStar will offer the mirror in the United States through Best Buy, its first strategic retail partner, beginning in spring 2011. The product will also be available through other selected consumer electronics retailers. The mirror will be priced at $299, plus installation (expected to cost between $75 and $100). A range of service plans will be available, starting at $18.95 a month or $199 a year.

I think this is great news...let's hope it fits the SSR.
(I hope it fits some other non-GMs that I own as well....)

I wonder if it will fit into a '64 Corvette or a '48 Chevy stepside???

I think that's great news too. Cell phones are OK - but the reception in the vehicle isn't as good as the On-Star's reception. Wonder if this installation will pipe the sound through the radio/speakers?

Arrow Verizon 4G & Onstar future

OnStar Leverages the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Network to Drive the Future of In-Vehicle Services
From the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), OnStar today unveiled a demonstration of prototype applications for what future in-vehicle entertainment, communications and safety could look like when taking advantage of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network.

Among the innovative services made possible by combining the power of OnStar with the speed of 4G:
· Vehicle monitoring

· Impact detection

· Home monitoring and control

· Electronic User’s Guide

· Video chat

· Traffic view
“The true broadband speed of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network gives our engineers the freedom to re-imagine the world of connected in-vehicle services in the future,” said OnStar President Chris Preuss. “While we haven’t decided yet which of these demonstration features OnStar will offer or when, these prototype applications show just some of what’s possible when we combine our 15 years experience in developing safe, secure and leading edge connected mobility solutions with the speed and agility of Verizon Wireless’s 4G LTE network. Any future services from OnStar will also meet our high standards for safety – making sure that drivers’ hands are on the wheel and their eyes are on the road.”

Wow Marc - are you gonna have one of those units in your SSR for the trip out to the International Rally this year? I'd like to see one installed. Ron

If GM really wants to keep the drivers hands on the wheel, the video screen
should not function unless the vehicle is in park.

Last report was that 85% of the people that get a new vehicle with Onstar
do not extend the contract beyond the free period. This looks like GM is trying
to find a way to get Onstar to break even.

Onstar should be an option on a new vehicle. Why pay for something you do not
plan on using. With the GPS you get with Onstar, tracking your vehicle is a lot easier.

If I decide to get a new vehicle I will get it without Onstar or have it disabled.
Big brother does not need to know where I am at.

Then one would have to then get rid of all other Internet and cell devices which can be used to track all your travels like your cell phones and EZ-Pass Tags and even your licenses will all soon carry chips that can be monitored at all boarders and even along Thruways & Interstate locations too

I'd like to have OnStar in the SSR. My other ride has Sync and Sirius applications and I love it...hands free, GPS, etc.

I am sure that is another reason for GM to upgrade their OnStar system but I think Ford was the one who really got GM more focused into the infotainment OnStar system even faster.

At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like this idea but the more I thought about that option and the more I analyzed it the more I liked it! I believe this is wonderful for anyone who wants to have all those great features and all for approximately $199 a year.

I like that idea for my SSR and maybe use it on my older GM vehicle.

That's only fair, considering what it will cost them to keep a record of when/where everybody's going, for homeland security.

No cell phone, no EZ-pass, and they already sell stainless steel wallets for RFIDs. But, they won't be able to monitor your license from the roadside unless you hang it out the window, unpowered RFIDs don't have that range.
It's not hard to defeat them, because they rely on people being too stupid to realize they're being tracked, or say, I don't care, I'm not doing anything wrong. The terrorists have won.

The Onstar FMV is listed as fitting the SSR.
Has anyone purchased one installed?
I recieved an e-mail from Onstar today offering it for $99.00 installed at BestBuy.
I have Onstar in three other vehicles so I don't know if this offer is just for current customers.
