Just got a 2006 SSR with automatic trans. Running at 70 mph my rpm's are
2700. The speedometer and the gps read the same mph. From a standing start, up to speed I can count 4 shifts in the transmission but no overdrive. What should my rpm be at 60 or 70 mph with the standard 3.73 gear? I guess the transmission does have an overdrive? The trans does not slip, it locks up very tight running up hill and down, the rpm hand does not move.
My SSR: '03 RED vin1337, '06(lastoneinblack) vin 24107..Sadly sold '04UV,'05SILVER,'06PACBLU FPR

THE FOUR shifts you feel are ..into second , into third , into fourth (over drive) and the torque converter lock up. This is normal. The RPMs sound right on for an automatic with the stock 3.73 ratio.
My SSR: Slingshot Yellow VIN 20778 Born 05 May 2005 (05/05/05)
Definitely nothing like my old '87 Silverado with the 5.7L fuel injection engine and the 4 Speed OD transmission.
That bugger would shift four times and then about 50 mph would "thunk" down into OD. Running about 75 mph the tachometer would be down around 1500 rpm or less and the exhaust sounded like a big ole boat.

Great highway gas mileage for that era.
YEH, they usually had 3.08 or 3.42 ratios. The lock up timing was annoying around rural trips, in -out-in-out, usually just left the trans in third until I hit the highway
Bring my SSR to it new home the trip was 2 1/2 hours and the gas mileage was at 18.2 mpg. Is this right on for speeds of 55 to 70 mph with very little stop and go?

Aywhere from 18 to 20 mpg highway is what you can expect from the LS2
with an automatic. A fuel additive like Lucas fuel treatment each tankfull may give another .2 to .3 mpg.
70 MPH with the torque converter locked should put you in the 2100 rpm range with stock gears and tires. If you are at 2700 RPM there is a problem somewhere, either 4th is slipping, the converter clutch is not locking or the tach is not accurate. One other thing though, a previous owner could have swapped out the gears to 4.56 or steeper which would explain the higher rpm. My advice would be to get this checked out soon to avoid potential trouble.
Thanks Greg, 2100 rpm sounds more like what I was thanking it should be. Going to jack up rear end and spin tires by hand and count the turns on drive shift befor going to the dealer ship. Checked trans fliud it was clean and did not smell. Truck drives very good transmission does not feel like it is slipping. I will up date after checking. Thanks
Just got through spinning tires by hand and drive shift turned 4 1/2 turns. So I guess my ring and pinion is 4.56. Now the question is how hard is this on my engine? I would have thought 4.10 gear is low enough. So why do people put 4.56 gear in a automatic SSR? I would like rpm's around 2400 at 70 mph.

I agree with you. I put 4:10 in my auto, thought 4:56 was to low for an auto.
That said, If I had a 6speed, I defiantly would put 4:56 gears in. The two extra gears would make the highway rpms more in line and not sacrifice performance.
My SSR: 05 6 speed black has a K&N cold air kit descreened and Diablo tuner & Eric's hood

Just my opinion.

I've been thinking of going to 4.56's for a long time at 80 with the 3.73's I'm only turning 2000 rpm's at 70 it's about 1650 the drone rpm. P/S I have a complete spare 14 bolt as a back up if I don't like it

Finally got to drive my new SSR for the second time today. Double checked rpm's 60 mph is 2150 or 2000, and at 70 looks like 2600 rpm. Have do some math, with 3.73 gear rpm should be 1785 at 60 mph. 4.10 gear 1963 rpm, and 4.56 gear 2183 rpm. This is not in blood but I think this is close. Long as I do not drive 70 mph for long periods the 4.56 gear will be O.K.. I do believe 4.56 will work best in the smokey mountains this summer. P.S. If I put the magnacharger on later 4.10 gear will go in.
