3 weeks of ownership, second tow to dealer

Went out to the SSR this afternoon, driver's door wouldn't unlock remotely, had to open it with the key. Put the key in the ignition, turned key, and nothing. Seems likely the battery is drained, though why is a mystery. To top it all off, the key is once again stuck in the ignition, even though the dealer installed a new ignition switch less than 2 weeks ago.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

a dead battery will cause the capture of your key in the ignition switch. The switch is not faulty.

Battery age

I'm not sure how old the battery is. I'll have to get hold of Ed. Any ideas what might have drained it?

Dan,

There was a post earlier this week about somebody's battery dying. Had to do with lifespan of the battery. You might ask Ed if he ever had the battery changed out. If not, I would definitely consider doing so.

I just did a search for the post earlier this week regarding battery lifespan, but was unsuccessful. Can somebody help me out here? Thank you!

Good luck, Dan.

OLD AGE is the biggest culprit, Dan.

The Battery in DOOPHUS starting pooping out after a little over two years.

Distance

I drive a very short distance daily (eight miles each way to school). And I put the top up and down both ways, with the engine running. Could that have contributed to the problem?

that shouldn't contribute to it...but leaving a cell phone charger plugged in drained mine but it took a couple days

Sears

Was going to have the SSR towed to the dealer tomorrow afternoon. Should I just have it jumped and drive it to Sears for a good Diehard? All of my documentation is locked in the back, so what do we need to do to hook up a jump, and is there anything special about changing the battery since is in the back somewhere? Or should I just let the dealer handle it?

And mine. Once I got it started and disconnected the charger from the passenger side, no more problem.

I was told that the outlet on that side remains on even when the engine is off.

Changing the battery is pretty routine. You do have to raise the vehicle or crawl under it to get to the battery carrier. To jump start the truck, raise the hood and find the red battery post cover on the passenger fender. Remove the cover and hook the positive jumper cable to the red post and the negative cable to a good ground on the engine. If the battery is dead, it will need to charge for several minutes before you attempt to drive very far. Good luck.

My recommendation, Dan . . .

If no warranty remaining . . . I would spend a few extra bucks on an Optima Battery. There's nothing worse than battery problems, especially when the bugger is in such an inconvenient location and just about everything depends on it.

Sams Club has them at a great price but I'm sure they're available at many other places like PepBoys, etc.

Good Luck.

Old Age

I agree with Doophus. The battery must be old/weak. Once you start having these kind of problems, you really need to install a new battery. It'll just get worse.

I do think that the 8 starts a day with short charging runs isn't helping matters with a weak battery.
Obviously when the new battery is installed have your charging system checked, just to be sure all is well.

My vote - new battery

Artsmart.... if your cell phone charger drained your battery in a couple days, I would consider replacing your battery as well

sorry just my humble opinion

I replace my automotive batteries about every 3-4 years. I have been burnt a few times out on the road and know it can be a real PITA. Not only can the cells wear out over time but they can short circuit as well with no warning. Hot weather is harder on them, since you are down south, do stop and go driving and actuate the top often I would say 3-4 years would be a good time to replace depending on what type of battery you replace it with.

Good luck

PS - I PM'd you twice but never heard back from your earlier PM to me, hope you received my replies

Morning all.. I had a slight issue this spring after parking the SSR for most of the winter, the window auto close after shutting the door didn't work.. Seemed pretty strange, but after driving for an hour or so, the battery must have charged up again, now all works well.. But after a few years, some batteries just give up.. It is the cheapest thing to change, if not then I carry a booster pack, about $50... Use it in my boat and in the SSR.. You never know with today's electronics... Cheap insurance... ENJOY!!!

If you jump start the SSR, MAKE SURE THE CORRECT TERMINAL IS USED. DO NOT USE THE POSITIVE TERMINAL AT THE FUSE BOX ON THE DRIVERS SIDE!!

The correct positive jump start terminal is located in the red box in the fender well on the passenger side. Use the alternator bracket for the negative connection.

Failure to use the correct connection can damage the cooling fan and possibly other electrical items.

The alarm system drains the battery on mine. I hate to admit this but if the R sits for a couple weeks without a varoom, varoom the battery dies. It's happened three times.

Talking Well

I had the same problems for a long time. I thought it was something else and I waisted a lot of time and money trying to find the draw, but all along my battery only had 336 Cold Cranking Amps and it should have had 750. I purchased a Yeller Top Optima. My troubles have gone completly away.
