TC Light at 100 Plus

Coming home last night I got on it a bit, hitting a bit over a 100, the TC light comes on and I back off.

So I am wondering what the relationship might be?

It MIGHT be this (JUST a theory):

The SSR is programmed to include a speed limiter at around 125 to 130 mph, since the factory tires are only rated to that speed. The system PROBABLY uses the same method to stop you from going faster as it uses to activate the traction control when it detects tire spin.

IF this is so (remember, it's only a thoery), then 4.56 gearing would activate it much sooner, at about 373/456 x 127 mph = 104 mph plus or minus a bit.

Just a theory.

Thanks Jim

Sounds about the right speed when the light came on. I didnt give a chance to feel a pull back as I slowed down quickly when the light came on.

I guess it's not wise to go that fast on the DC beltway anyways.

The TC OFF light always goes on around 95-100mph with 3.73 gears.

(remember when the light is ON the TC is OFF)

Talking I'm in da club!

Two words-YEEEE HAAWW !!

I got the AmerAxle [OEM?] gears from a connect thru Mikeyram (& Waysouth6speed) and took them over to Phoenix Transmissions to let Greg Ducato and his excellent team install them, the servo and a new stall converter. WOW - she runs like a different truck, kind of like she was running in sand before.

Can't say enough about the folks @ Phoenix. They got the entire build done in one day! And Greg was nice enough to let me and my son take his re-built Aspen wagon for the day, a very cool ride. The boy had never seen an 8 track before. Thanks again to Mark, William and Greg for all their efforts.

Now to get her home and park her for a few days so I can get the PCM to PA for the tune and calibrations. Then onto the next mod........but probably new rear tires first. Brings a whole new meaning to "smoke 'em if you got 'em"

4.56 gears

Now the ultimate question.....Where do i get these replacement gears?
From previous posts, it appears AAM makes it for auto so I went to American Axle site and there's 135 listings for 4.56(aaaah), anyone have the part number by chance?

Two questions - 1 sort of a repeat

Hi,
I have read threads on this topic with interest plus Jim G's book. Two questions come to mind: Please don't jump on me for the first one:
1) is it possible that changing the gears would have an impact on re-sale, given that it is not stock. I know that many owners plan to keep the truck for life, but I will need to sell one, and more if I ever find an 06 Blur at the right time.
2) does anyone know of a supplier in Canada, prefer Western Canada that can provide the correct parts numbers etc. I could get Westers tune in Tilley to do the work, just need to know the specifics on parts.

GARY'S 04 has a couple of sets and hes kinda close to you....very informative person and he installs ...might be worth checking out in "parts for sale" he recommends the motive brand of gears, but the ones he has are for 6-speed

The vast majority of potential buyers would not ever realzie the gearing was not stock. They would just say "hey, this one seems very responsive compared to the others I have drvien".

Any potential buyer astute enough to spot the 4.56 vs 3.73 gearing via speedometer vesus tachometer reading, would understand the massive benefit he is getting.

Any Fanatic would say "hey this saves me $800 in parts and labor, because everyone knows these vehicles need stiffer gearing than the factory installs".

I cannot see a negative scenario, unless you are thinking the ultimate long shot: that your specific SSR is going to end up someday in the future in concours competition. If so, I respectfully suggest that non-stock gearing is likely to be the least of any restoration concerns.

I really wouldn't sweat this. Once you have tried either 4.10 or 4.56, you will not want to stay with 3.73.

oh by the way............WOW what a difference

Make sure to ask the installer if he added posi lube when he did the swap. Without it, you'll hear a pronounced growl.

GM recommends synthetic gear lube and posi lube for the rear end. If he did install both, I'd take him up on his offer if they howl too badly. Maybe give them time to break in (500 miles or so) and see if they quiet down.

nuzzo: It appears you have a 6-speed?

This only LOOKS like it has no posi. It actually does have a limited slip capability builkt in, but it is NOT conventional like your guy is used to seeing. This Eaton setup behaves like an open diff until one wheel starts to spin, and then it locks up.

Secondly, there are several ways to address the noise.

The best way is to replace the silly factory light gauge "ringtone" aluminum dirveshaft with a quieter one that does not play music based on excitations from the rear axle . One of Dennis Reinhart's metal matrix composite driveshafts is perfect. It totally silenced my Motive Gear 4.56 rear end noise.

A less effective solution is to use "climbing fluid" in the axle housing versus normal syntehtic lubricant. The "climbing fluid" "clings" to the gears much more aggressivley and thus silences some (not all) of the noise. Check with a more technical source than me to ensure that climbing fluid is comaptoible with this Eaton axle (it is with the automatic axle).

Thirdly, a change in backlash clearance can make a difference in noise produced. The Motive Gear instrucitons called for a much looser clearnce than we ultimately went with in mine. The tighter clearnace helped make it quieter, but don't go TOO tight or it will seize up! You can search on my postings from about mid 2005 to get all the details on clearances I used. I cannot remember them.

The best solution by FAR is of course the driveshaft. Dennis's MMC shaft is totally awesome. Last I hear, he had a sourcing problem for the MMC shaft, but may have overcome it by now.

4:56 Club

Have had my 4:56 (American Axle) set for over a month now, and just waiting on my local "third member" expert to install them. He stays booked up, far in advance, working on 'Vettes. I am putting them in the red '04 auto, not the '05 three pedal. Already installed Greg's servo, and just hope the 4:56 gear set makes as much of a difference. So, go ahead, and add me to the club.
