Air Filter: Fram vs K&N
The guy who installed my supercharger recommended that I get a K&N air filter and install. Auto Zone and other local part stores do not have this and can not order it. The book does not list it either. I have to assume that K&N does not make one for the SSR. The store I went to recommended Fram's AirHog.
Any opinion or suggestions?

With all the extra air being drawn into your engine I would go with the K&N cold air kit. I have it installed on my rod and the filter element is a lot larger and has more surface area.

Use AMSOIL filter
I went with the AMSOIL filter. No worries about over oiling. and having any warranty issues with the dealer. The AMSOIL filter requires no oil and is warrantied for 100K miles just blow it out with low pressure air.

Dan, I`m considering an Amsoil filter. Do you have the part number?? Thanks.......Paul

Amsoil.... I agree with Autodan... Great filter, no oil, mess, or time waiting to dry. Clean and easy, no need for a cold air kit at $300.00+!
Paul: part # EaA83 If you go to the Amsoil site it's $38.10 and you can get a 6 month dealer subscription for $10.00, that will save you an extra 20% off that price. Clean it every 25,000 miles like Autodan said and it is supposed to last 4 years or 100,000 miles.

Funny you should ask ! I bought a fram AirHog and a K&N filter for my stock o4 5.3 . They are identical in every way...musta came down the same production line. Except if i remember the fram was about $10 less.
I bought the rectangular style stock replacement filters from k & n and fram airhog for mine. The same filter works on the 5.3 and 6.0 . About $69.00 if i remember right. The k & n cold air intake kit runs about $350. One important note on the k & n filters. My buddy installed the cold air intake on his GTO 6.o LS2. About 3 weeks later he started getting a check engine lite. Took it to the dealer and they found that the excessive oil in the k & n filter had sucked up onto the mass air flow sensor and caused it to produce the faulty readings. They wiped out his air intake tube and his sensor and charged him $60 to diagnose it. If anyone plans on installing the kit, be sure to wipe off all the excessive oil from the filter before install.

Do you have to pull fuse after install

Thanks for the suggestion on Amsoil. I was concerned about the filtering on the oil type, because I'll be using the my truck as a everyday driver. Didn't want the field dust to suck in (I took off the screen...bad, bad).
Anyway, Called the local Amsoil distr here on Oahu. Told them I was looking for 05 SSR filter. A "WHAT" was the reply. Came down the they cross ref it to the Vett. Last one on the island...go figure. Will pick it up before the weekend. BTW, paid $41 plus tax.
Now question:
Should I pull out my fuel/air calibration fuse after I install?

I didn't.... but maybe I did it wrong. Anyone have advice about this?

So what is the difference between the Fram/K&N and this AMSOIL filter? Do we get more performance with the "OIL"-y ones but more of the risk getting it in where it's not supposed to? It seems like the oily ones are a hassle. Anyone used both that can give us a comparison?

Straight from Amsoil's website
"AMSOIL Ea Air Filters represent a major breakthrough in filtration technology. The revolutionary nanofiber technology used in AMSOIL Ea Filters captures more dirt, holds more dirt and allows better air flow than conventional air filters. AMSOIL Ea Filters improve engine performance and help engines last longer.
Absolute Efficiency
AMSOIL Ea Air Filters are the most efficient filters available to the car/light truck market. Ea Air Filters’ synthetic nanofiber media removes 5 times more dust than traditional cellulose filter media alone and 50 times more dust than wet gauze filter media. AMSOIL Ea Air Filters have a service life of 100,000 miles or four years, whichever comes first.
Better Air Flow
AMSOIL Ea Air Filters allow more airflow than filters that use cellulose media alone. Cellulose fibers are larger than nanofibers, and have larger spaces between the fibers, causing contaminants to load in the depth of the media and plug the airflow path, which results in higher restriction and less capacity. The synthetic nanofibers in EaA Filter media have submicron diameters and small interfiber spaces, which result in more contaminants being captured on the surface of the media and lower restriction.
More Capacity
AMSOIL Ea Air Filters hold up to two and a half times more contaminants than cellulose air filters. Since the nanofibers in the media are so small there are more pores per square inch, allowing for higher dirt-holding capacity and lower pressure drop when compared to cellulose filter media alone. Thinner media fibers produce more uniform pore size distribution, improving the filter’s overall quality and ability to capture and retain particles. Testing shows that Ea Air Filters hold 15 times more contaminants than a wet gauze type filter."
Of course this is a one-sided conversation... I really can't be bothered to mess with the oil myself to be perfectly honest.. Really though, I've been told this is the best filter and works out to be the least expensive (not that that makes a difference for my baby).

Amsoil installed
Thanks again for the suggestion on Amsoil. Eaa83. Installed it today. You would think it could be easier. Thought I could just take off the 2 screws and lift her out. But no, I had to unhook the MAF cable and lift off the back "plate" before I could take out the old filter.
I pulled fuse 27 to reset the fuel intake. I'll see if there's a difference.
Price was right. Paid $36 plus tax.

You mean you have the cold air intake kit, right? Air filter for that much better give me some other pleasures in life
Also, I just heard from my installer that the K&N cold air intake may void my Magnuson warranty.
O.K. - I did not pay $325 for mine. Mine was obtained by my favorite 4 letter "F" word FREE. A friend sold his SSR and gave it to me. But it is just like the one on ebay:
K&N AIR INTAKE SYSTEM 63-3055 CHEVY SSR - FUEL SAVER Item number: 130091124718
I can tell the difference with it. It has the aluminum bracket that contours to the hood with a rubber gasket.
